Let us know who you sold it to so we don’t end up buying it thirdhand😝
PL-510 direct drive with a Shure M-95 cartridge. Kept at 1.5g with new a stylus on a regular basis. Records were in VG++ each when I sold them.
Oh ya, I gave away the PL-510 to a guy at work whose into vinyl. He still uses the table and cartridge.
Not to be sappy, but too many people are feeding their families by working there.
And it’s not their fault.
The buck should stop at the top.
Mo Fi exists to do one thing, make money. They’re no different than a business that makes washing machines or breakfast cereal. Businesses fail every day for reasons much more innocent than this. Mo Fi isn’t a charity, they aren’t working to cure cancer. Mo Fi failing would be a good thing. Mo Fi made the business decision to lie. It worked for many years. They got caught. If Mo Fi gets away with it, there will be more incentive for other companies to do the same.
I have no sympathy for Mo Fi. None.
Harsh brah.
Even though I understand the sentiment.
Reading this thread made me check into their site, I bought a few SACDs as a result. No analog controversy there, I hope. I just want to hear some good recordings.
There’s no question, in the main, what they put out is pretty impressive, certainly from a vinyl standpoint, can’t speak for SACD, but imagine they’re still good quality.
Sometimes there are misses but in my experience they’ve been few and far between really, and often it’s because the source master just isn’t up to scratch.
Well…speaking of Mo-Fi SACD “remasters” –
You have to be selective. There is no way to make a silk purse out of sow’s ear (old recordings) in many instances.
I have bought about a half dozen SACDs of some classics and they have been a mixed bag. None are bad mind you. I just had high expectations for a better rendering of these favorite gems.
Spend some time researching the tiles if you can. Sometimes, the good ole originals are more or less just as good (and cheaper to love, compared to the relatively “spendy” Mo-Fi’s).
Happy Hunting!
You are right. earlier (way earlier) I put in a comment without reading much of the thread. I commented I was not too crazy about some of their remaster SACDs. But a few sounded great, and I hope I have better luck this time.
I tapped into this thread for the first time this afternoon and - Good Golly Miss Molly! Holy Moly!
To each his own path to happiness, so I have nothing to offer, agree or disagree with except a few random observations:
(1) I’m so used to getting lied to on a daily basis by just about every institution I deal with that I don’t believe anything until I see the data for myself. Especially with claims made in regards to almost anything audiophile-related where snake oil is not exactly unheard of. Caveat Emptor.
(2) Sadly, the tribal outrage zeitgeist of the times has made itself manifest in this bru-ha-ha.
(3) My #1 priority is finding music that satisfies my soul with acceptable levels of SQ that are not cringeworthy. If there’s recorded material I can “get lost” in, it’s hard to beat well-executed Redbook, especially on the PST. If there’s an option to up the ante with hi res, DSD, or boutique analog, that’s a “nice to have” but, for me, not essential.
(4) Will make a good B-school case study along with “New Coke” and a few others.
Of course, YMMV.
One way to partially make it up to their customers would be to offer them copies of the DSD256 masters. I assume there would be contractual restrictions on that but, hey, it would be cool.
It’s so interesting to observe how no one directly involved got well out of this story.
Surely not Mofi, but also not Esposito, nor Fremer, nor the audiophiles who can’t hear things, nor the analog format which doesn’t seem to have the identifiable magic fans talk about, nor the DSD format, which still doesn’t seem to make people stopping to care for all analog and which didn’t make it to a quality batch in this story, but a matter of complaints (even if not directly for sound quality reasons). What a mess, in which everyone afterwards still tries to find a honorable position…or tries to forget it
I would say Esposito came out positive, despite Fremer flaming him.
I’m now aware of his store, I almost bought a Kraftwerk record from him online, and I watch his channel now. I’ll probably purchase from him in the future.
I would say the consumer is more well informed because of Mike from the in groove.
A lot of people will no longer pay 100-125 dollars for their releases, such as Thriller.
More money for cables!!!
There are 3d world issues…and first world issues. This thread along with many others reminds me of all the .1 issues we have in our society. Maybe there was deceit…maybe there wasn’t. Count your blessings if this is an issue that gets your worked up. Enjoy the music folks no matter what the source.
I absolutely get your point about the position this takes in life; babies are born without limbs, hearing, sight, promise of a long, healthy life.
But no, “maybe there wasn’t deceit” is not debatable at this point. Especially in view of MOFI’s responses. Cat/bag/out.
Everything about audio is first world, well-off first world.
NO
Yes he certainly was the sympathetic figure in the story, but we saw he also suffered quite a bit personally inbetween. But I’d also say, for his business the whole thing should be beneficial.
