They seem to be an odd bunch and at least they can say they won one.

Murphy strikes again…

Nahā€¦ā€œThe Curseā€ is over.

The last 5+ years have been ā€œself-inflictedā€ (IMO).

Cheers.

Not surprised and had low expectations for this season anyway. Frankly I’m more interested in what’s happening in a newly reseeded farm system after last year’s fire sale. The next competitive core is there. Want proof, check out Christopher Morel. Brought up to fill for Madrigal and has also played CF. This kid is absolutely electric at the plate and can flash leather. Keep in mind he’s 21st in the Cubs prospect pipeline and big league ready now. I’m going to Wrigley to see him alone. Wow.

I love your optimism!

They have anybody left for a fire sale?

Contreras.

scotte1 mentioned one fire sale candidate. Heyward is in the next to last year of his whopper contract. I hope Jed tries to find somebody who’ll pick up the last of his contract and throw a prospect or two in the deal. I’d rather that than Heyward walks away as a FA next year with the Cubs getting nothing. They definitely won’t resign him. Now is the time if they’re going to do it.

Stranger things have happened, but I can’t imagine any club looking to grab Heyward and his remaining salary.

Yup. That’s why it’s a long shot. I say at least try. May be surprised by a bite.

Speaking of that 22 year old spark plug Morel, he literally just manufactured a run in the 1st against the Brewers. Stole 3rd and induced a throwing error to score. This is the kind of instinct for the game that can’t be taught. Go Cubs Go! Get that series split tonight.

Everyone following the wild and crazy action as the 6 pm EDT trade deadline approaches? It’s nuts. The Padres have apparently gotten the big fish Soto and Josh Bell from the Nats. The Cubbies sure are keeping their cards close to the vest with just two known bullpen trades (and IMHO got the best out of the deal with the Yanks long term). Just across the wire, the Brewers have dealt Hader to the Padres as well. Glad to see that 9th inning thorn in the Cubbies side out of the NL Central. Bye, bye.

Would like to see Cubs move others in lieu of Contreras and show some seriousness about forming a new core…

Will see soon enough…

The starting lineup for tonight’s game against the Cards has just been posted. Both Contreras and Happ are in it. Anything could happen at the last moment I suppose, but it seems unlikely Ross would pencil both of them in if one or both were about to be traded. Robertson just got traded for a Phillies pitching prospect, another deal out of the bullpen I’m not broken up about at all. Robertson was always a 37 year old short term rental anyway. Not the future as closer for the Cubs. If I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, I’m perfectly happy with keeping Contreras and Happ in Cubs uniforms. The 22 year old green behind the ears rookies need leadership in the dugout.

Hope your crystal ball is correct…

I agree with your overall analysis. I think the guy they just got from the Dodgers (yesterday?) was a good trade as well – as was minor league pitching prospect they picked up.

So far, so good.

My theory is they wanted the Moon for Contreras or they were going to keep him. At least during this round of trade opportunities…

Cheers,

Scott

For now. You got that right, Scott.
All eyes on the boat load of pitching prospects the Cubs have hauled in last trade deadline, this trade deadline and in the draft where, I think, 8 of their first 10 picks were pitching prospects. They snagged and signed Cade Horton out of Oklahoma, considered overall the best college pitching prospect in this years draft. Heck, they signed him for 1.3 mil under the bonus cap for being the 7th pick in the first round, giving themselves more cash to sign their other draft picks. All the right moves. Now we’ll see if the farm system can deliver.

Strange Brewers would trade Hader, they are in first place in the central

Easily the weirdest trade of the season. Stearns claims with Hader a year away from FA, now was the best time to trade him for best value. To me it’s nuts in a season when the Brewers are eyeing post-season. Who knew they’d be sellers. Stearns has been in hot water in the past with the fan base. I imagine this trade isn’t going down well with anyone thinking this was the year.
