I hear they are flexible, so you can tell them what you intend to use the I2S port with so they could match your needs.
I’m not to far away from giving a PST a try.
You should ask Jay’s if their transport i2S is compatible with the Holo May KTE and report back
If the Jay’s is compatible with the DS then it is also with the May.
That was my thought. The Jay’s is also user configurable. I did not say it is EASILY user configurable. It requires mini switch settings to do it. But it’s able to be set up for multiple types of i2s.
Al
Since they are both user configurable I doubt it would be an issue and chances are one of the May’s four settings cover both Jay’s and Denafrips. Probably also the new Project transport which is getting rave reviews.
Thanks kclarity, that will help when I justify this purchase for myself
I was considering the Project myself, but according to my local distributor the I2S connection is intended to be used with a Project DAC. In other words, I2S will likely not work with the Directstream DAC.
But it could work with the Holo Audio DAC which is so very important to
oh wait, never mind.
I recently acquired the Jay’s Audio CDT2 MK3. As Steve Guttenberg remarked with regard to its predecessor, the CDT2 MK2, the MK3 opens up the sound spatially. My soundstage has significantly improved over the Cambridge Audio CXC transport. The soundstage is no longer truncated. Everything is better: dynamics, subtle nuances in sound, detail and resolution - all significantly improved. As Paul McGowan points out, a good digital source is critical even with a high-end DAC. The Jay’s Audio does not fail here. Steve Guttenberg states that there is a marked improvement with the MK3 over the MK2.
Unfortunately, I have not heard the PS Audio transport as yet; my dealer will be arranging an audition in due course. So, I cannot draw comparisons between the Jay’s Audio and PS Audio.
For me, a roadblock is the price of the PS Audio compared with the Jay’s Audio. Steve Guttenberg suggests that the Jay’s Audio sounds like a $4500 transport but is selling for $2498.
While I would be very interested to hear what the galvanic isolation on the PS Audio provides in terms of sound quality, the price is a major hurdle.
The sound on the Jay’s Audio is really good. So being an audiophile on a budget I will stick with the Jay’s for now.
The Jay’s is fully compatible with my PS Audio DS DAC on I2S; I’m using an Audioquest Vodka HDMI, and it sounds superb.
The manual of the Jay’s points out that it is operational on I2S with, amongst others, the PS Audio DS DAC.
No configuring needed: MK3 works directly on I2S with PS Audio DirectStream DAC. Mine does on my PS Audio DSD. The manual also states that among others, I2S on Jay’s works with the PS Audio DSD.
May well be a serious competitor, considering also Steve Guttenberg’s very favorable review of the Jay’s MK2 and MK3.
I haven’t heard the PS Audio transport as yet, so it may be better with its galvanic isolation, i.e. no noise on the signal output.
But I have the Jay’s MK3, and everything that Steve Guttenberg observes on this transport is correct, on my observations. What really stands out for me is how the sound opens up spatially, and the detail and previously unheard nuances.
Steve Guttenberg has also tested the Jay’s MK3 I2S on the very high-end Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC. In fact, he used the Jay’s as a digital source in reviewing the Mola Mola!
And the PS Audio transport comes at a much higher price tag. So it may be a case of comparing apples with pears…
But I don’t remember Steve Guttenberg reviewing the PST or any PS Audio components. Or have I just missed his PS Audio reviews?
As an owner of the MK3 I am waiting and hoping that someone will compare it to the PST so I can decide should I stay or should I go.
I’m betting on the PST. Besides, being able to play SACDs and Hi Rez files is a big plus. SACDs are far superior to CDs in my experience, even with my DMP.
I only have less than a dozen of them though.
That shouldn’t stop you from getting more in the future Al. There are some really nice ones being produced by Octave Records right now, but no new CDs. Believe me, some of theses better recorded SACDs can sound better than Hi Rez files.
Al you are that someone who needs to compare the PST with the Jays! Or at least I was hoping you are! Lol
