DMP 3.09 firmware released

Connect PS Audio, with a piece of software, a log, they can see what happens when you play that record.
What Paul says:
Barry can do for those willing to help is log what’s occurring in your machine. Using the SD card, Barry sends you a slightly modified version of code and it logs every action then he reads it back to see what’s happening. We’ve been doing this with several helpful customers to find out what’s happening. Very helpful.

This may be a dumb question, but have you inspected the “business side” of the disc surface? When I’ve had disc playback issues (with any kind of disc in any player) it is usually a problem with the disc itself. I find this most often with discs from the library or a rental service, or as suggested above, a CD-R/DVD-R, etc.

Especially if it fails to load or function at all, that would suggest an issue toward the very inmost portion of the disc, closest to the hole, which is the start point where it reads headers, etc. so the player knows what it is. Even very fine scratches can cause issues.

Sometimes the plastic outside layer separates from the metal substrate (if it’s a factory disc) or was poorly manufactured, and you can see rainbow/oilslick sorts of shapes (not the usual rainbow reflections).

If it’s a dye layer (CD-R) rather than a metal disc, there are a lot of things that go wrong with those that may not be visible.

Sorry - kinda went on about it (caffeine, don’tcha know), but it’s a first principle for me, like checking the wiring when something is acting up. I’ve done lots of live work over my career where you go to a venue and set up, plug everything in, and troubleshoot. So many seemingly VERY complex issues are so often a stupid wire or connector, it’s not even funny.

hi BB, it looks like a regular cd and not a cd-r. i just reexamined it and it looks fine. I sprayed the music side with mobile fidelity disc cleaner and it did nothing to help. it would be most interesting to get another copy and try it. I may do that even though i am not in love with the music. I do have to say that in spite of all the issues, I would not give up the DMP player unless PS came out with a newer and better unit.

I just made a copy of the non-working CD. Same problems which means there must be something in the code that blocks all functions in the DMP. However, the disc plays correctly in another CD player/transport which means the DMP seems to react to certain code in a way it should not.

so i just played the Pete Levin-Mobius cd in my back up player, a Marantz cd/SACD player, and it worked fine. what a puzzle

An interesting next step would be to try the curious Levin_Mobius disc in another DMP (if that’s possible) to see if the same issue occurs.

I do have a friend with a DMP but he lives about 90 miles away. but yes that would be interesting

The SACD that caused my 3.09 DMP and the remote to freeze plays without any problem with 3.06 firmware.

Yes that’s why you must contact Barry of PS Audio, I had the same problems as you have. …3.06 is the best If you have that kind of problem. You have the issues it’s useless to try on another DMP, if it plays you have still that problem. Barry is the best help you can get.

Ronald

Thanks Ronald. I have contacted PS but so far the solution is still pending.

Barry asked me to reload 06 and it worked fine with the Mobius disc. reloaded 09 and it messed up again. there is something about the umlaut over the o in the title of cut six that is messing it up. who would have thought.

Loaded 3.09 two days ago…all going smoothly. As opposed to 3.06 which was problematic and didn’t allow me to play a ripped dvd-r disc. 3.09 is reading the DVDR flawlessly. The sound is big, clear and deep. The bass is so huge that if one doesn’t have the drivers to handle it …could lead to muddy rivers… I have been playing my vinyl and cassetes since 3.06…back on the DMP …just like having a new uit again …over and over. Keep the upgrades coming

Another quality of 3.09 is that there is more dynamic range and clarity at upper volumes that for some reason is using less power on the P-10. It’s a difference maker on my system. Bits and timing. Go figure.

Actually, the problematic disc I have is a sampler with works from Neeme Järvi (Jaervi). This means, the information on the disc contains an “umlaut”.
Hopefully thkis can be corrected since I have many discs with “umlauts”, e.g. Janacek (here written by me withoud the umlaut c), Dvorak (here written without the “umlaut” R"). Please bear in mind that there are also numerous accent-signs.

it is so interesting that it would work fine on 06 but not 09. here is the response from Barry "We found a bug internally and I have to check if it was in 3.09. If so, it would be having problems with both track 6 and the album title because of the ö character.

Good news is that we have a fix for it which will be in the next release

Generally DMP works ok - with the remote.
But the touch screen does not work at all. Im running 3.09

I had to return to 3.07 because I experienced “too many” problems with 3.09…!

I do like the sound through my system but functionality has nosedived big style with 3.09. I’ve already listed all the faults on this thread.

Have you tried the screen calibration? Turn the unit off with the rear switch. Hold down the logo button on the front, and switch the unit back on. The screen will then walk you through the cal.

Many thanks jamesh for your explanations. You saved my day

it has been fixed. new update coming soon.
