“I’ve said before, this is the best-sounding and worst functioning piece of gear I’ve ever owned.” Spot on! Couldn’t agree more. The sound quality was the reason, I finally decided to order one after having a demo unit for two weeks. My dealer persuaded me not to wait as I originally had decided, saying that PS Audio is going to provide a software fix very soon. That was in January.
Hm…
So, is version 3.xx FINAL or another INTERIM, possibly being followed by a version 4?
Paul, can you provide us with what specifically you are referring to?
What comes to mind for me is it appears the DMP will never be able to navigate through Blu-ray and DVD video discs as they require a video monitor for navigation. I assume BD-R and BD-RE discs will not pose a problem (unless one builds in a complex menuing system when burning). Is there anything else the DMP will not be able to do which we may have expected?
Yes, thank you for the opportunity to set the record straight. Sometimes these discussions take on a life of their own.
All installed ok, not sure how big sound improvements but they are there. I am having the same issue as others in that it reads SACDs as PCM and sends PCM to the dsdac. I have had to load and reload my sacds to get the DMP to recognise them and this is a nuisance as I play them all the time and this was not an issue pre update. I see others have suffered this too and it is a little disappointing in such a long awaited update.
Blu-ray plays better and some functionality is much better but sometimes still takes 3 or 4 presses of the remote for the DMP to change track. So all in all better but not near what I would hope the finished article should be.
All props to Paul who doesn’t duck the controversy and doesn’t make excuses, but addresses it head-on. Satisfied or dissatisfied with the DMP you have to respect that. I do.
Frank
For clarification - the James Taylor DSD layer is being played in 3.06? My DMP only plays PCM since the update. I wonder if PLCOMP has hit the nail on the head in that the “fine-tuning” makes each Oppo drive interact differently with the SW?
Reboot the DMP. change the input on the DAC to another source and than back to the DMP. This will clear up the issue. I have found after I have played a number of CD’s in a row and than play a SACD that sometimes this issue will happen. Not every time though.
I have had enough of 3.06 functional issues… back to 2.06…
Didn’t Paul recently proclaim they were once a hardware company but were now a software and hardware company? Uh, maybe too soon for that label.
When I read it I thought maybe someone was spoofing!?

A most excellent suggestion!
Yes I’m using 3.06. Works fine to date, I generally only play entire discs. I did try selecting a track via the RC number keypad and also RC ff to the next track whilst a track was playing and both operations worked okay.
Great idea if the list is published so it can be seen by everyone all the time otherwise posters would have to read the entire thread to check if their issue had been previously posted.
Whilst the current way is not optimised it does give Paul & Co some idea of the severity of issues the units ‘in the wild’ have.
Maybe it’s now time to close this thread while PS Audio complete the work on 3.06 and start a new one on the next update.
This thread is not specific to 3.06 but deals with issues encountered with recent DMP updates in general according to the thread’s title.
I wanted to compare 2.06 to 2.08 SQ wise. Some have said 2.06 is better. I had downloaded that version but erased it when 2.08 got posted. Could someone please e-mail it to me?
Thanks.
Though you may in fact be correct in your speculation (time will tell), I would have to say that one of the things that concerns me lately is that we’re trying to extrapolate from a couple of people’s experience ALL THE WAY to “this could be the problem”, which is a HUGE leap.
I appreciate that it may be well-intentioned, but I think we have to resist the temptation to armchair quarterback this thing, which is roughly equivalent to some combination of a soccer match and American football - watched by us on television. No one knows the rules, and it is at a significant remove.
EDIT: I HAVE NO IDEA what I clicked on that this response is to - but it was NOT this post of yours, Sixpack.
This is not to say that my response is not part of my thought process with regard to this thread…but, I think I’ll go get a sixpack, and I’ll feel better ; )
See, here, Product Update Archives, toward the bottom.
(You may want to remove your email address from your post.)
I’m using 2.06 only because 3.06 was too finicky responding to the remote. Also, when I first installed 3.06, it would not play SACD in DSD. Then I rebooted the DMP and never had that issue again.(emphatic, huh?) 3.06 is a gigantic leap forward from the dreaded 2.08.
If I am not mistaken, it was originally intended and billed as a universal disc player — not limited to SACD, redbook, and data disc.
