I don’t believe that as i have been told differently! They just can’t and won’t abandon customers who spent $6000 for a transport.
I can’t agree with you more! But let’s give Paul a chance to ring in and tell it to us straight before any of us gets riled-up here.
Well I am quoting Joey Fischer who replied the following to me:
'The final firmware edition for the DirectStream Memory Player has already been issued."
We ended up in a difficult situation when Oppo closed. Many of the problems we face originate from the interface between Oppo’s drive and our boards. While Oppo was still kicking, we had their engineering team supporting us and working with us to develop fixes.
Now that they have closed their HT and audio division, that support has completely stopped.
Our engineering team still has the DMP on their plate and it will stay there.
Some issues, though, originate on the Oppo side and those are substantially harder for us to address.
For instance, Oppo’s drive does not bother with ordered commands. So if you hit next, next, play, the Oppo might send back ‘Ok, Ok, error.’ However, since the Oppo drive doesn’t bother ordering things, we don’t know which command failed.
We plan on wringing as many bugs out of the DMP as possible. Any bugs on the Oppo side require some really tricky and clever coding, which is not a quick process.
Thanks a lot for clarifying this Jo Hannah, much appreciated. You can’t be possibly related to Bobby are you?! (my dad drew with him in the early 70’s).
As you can see from Schroedster’s reply to my comment that is simply not true. Barry has been busy on some other projects but he is not finished with the DMP just yet.
Mark, I don’t know if you saw my post here, but it may be of some help to you.
Not sure what you mean. She specifically said 3.13 is the last iteration they’ll be launching.
This is obviously a bummer to all users but, given the mitigations achieved until 3.13 and how fantastically the DMP sounds, I have decided to go for one anyway. What Paul, Bob and Team did with this unit is nothing short of legendary as it is.
I am currently running my DMP on a Beta load that is designated 9.17 I am a beta tester and Barry is still working on the code for the DMP. What I mean is that statement about 3.13 being the final load for the DMP is not true.
Well I wonder why Joey Fischer from PSA would e-mail me otherwise (I quoted the exact words)?
Our engineering team creates road maps for updates - some fixes are easier than others, and they plot out in what order they will process through things and when they will release updates.
Oppo closing pretty much threw the road map out the window.
Work is continuing, though it is not as structured and is not tied to a timeline like it would be under different circumstances.
Sometimes things get said that are not correct. They have allot of new employees at PS Audio of late.
Thanks PB…
That’s one of the drawbacks with having to use outside suppliers in any product. The supply chain really has no guaranteed future in this case and no guarantee of continued quality standards in most cases especially with Asian suppliers. (except Japan which always holds high quality standards no matter what) I watched an interview with Andrew Jones (I think) who said the Chinese suppliers in general will always hold the agreed price to produce a component or assembly of components even if it has to reduce quality of the parts to do so.
Indeed, there’s lots of info floating around about this and Joey’s doing her best to keep everyone informed as best she knows. We haven’t done a good enough job communicating what’s happening in engineering to the sales people. Our bad, not hers.
Barry is indeed working on cleaning up a few of the remaining bugs and we’ll have something for DMP owners more than the great fixes we have already implemented.
Do make sure you have the latest firmware installed in your DMP.
I wonder if there is a way to track down some of the individuals who used to work for Oppo, and hire them on temporarily to help sort things out?
If I want to enjoy SACD sound (in my case downsampled, since I don’t have a PS Audio DAC), I have to run my DMP with 3.10 at the moment. DSD downsampling not working anymore in the latest release is a major bug for me, unfortunately…
Ditto here.
