DS DAC / Bridge Freeze

rossop said The 2G card froze the DS after four songs. I took it out & emailed Paul. Just waiting for him to give me directions. Listening to Hendrix live, Machinegun. Sounds great too!
Instructions sent. Thanks guys!
vinisuis said Let me tell you a little more about my setup. I use Asset UPnP media server, I find it has the best SQ, and elyric controlled from an IPod gen2. It is a bit inconvenient having to adjust volume levels now and then with playlists, but I want to keep things simple on the streaming side.

As long as I allow the cover art to come up (ten to twenty seconds) on each track I can use ether the DS remote or the IPOD. If I am playing tracks from the same CD, in other words the same art work, everything is normal no problems. Once I get a screen freeze, I can still select and play tracks with the IPOD, but with no volume control. I’ve also had the same result as others with pulling the SD card, all remote functions are normal, but of course with out artwork. Please let me know if anyone is having the same problem, or can reproduce the results I am getting.

Thanks

This sounds right. The SD card, depending on what it is, seems to be the culprit. If you want to email me directly, it would be helpful - if you’re willing to send us the SD card. We need a couple of cards that have this problem. Not all SD cards do. It’d be appreciated if you could. Thanks. Glad you like the DAC!

Could these lockups be file related? I mean do they always happen on the same album? If your DS freezes, remove the SD card, format it on your PC, the reinstall it, power cyclle your DS. Then play the same album. Does the DS crash again? I am just trying to figure out what the root cause of this problem is.

I play mainly playlists and the freeze happens independent of what track is playing. When I first noticed it the card with fw 6115 was in the dac so I took a spare card and did a long format on it. I put it in and it froze after four tracks. Never the same track or album. I got an email from Paul and will be sending it over to you guys.

Thank you for the information and the SD card. . I am just trying to get the root cause of this issue, but so far I cannot reproduce it on my setup. How many songs can you play before it freezes?

It seems rather random. When it first happened I did a reboot and it played for hours. It may have frozen but I did not notice at first because music still plays and I can use JR to change tracks etc. (but no volume control). When I got onto it it froze after 8 songs. Then the 4 songs I told you about. It get half-three quarters through the cover art display and then stops. This is how I know its frozen.

Good thing you guys are on the jobI will be sending the card back later this morning.

Thanks for your help. Just to let you know I played music to my DS from my bridge all day, making sure the cover art changed everytime, with no lockups. So I hope your SD card helps.

Dennis,

Based on the observation from vinisuis the problem could also be related to the method of writing to the cover art and the events that happen in between. I also have the freezing problem when the cover art on the DS display is changing. I also frequently change the volume using the controller app (elyric or JRemote) to adjust volume for the new album. I don’t know the logic of the programming but if the volume control or other activities on the remote are event driven and immediatelly executed it could be that activities on the remote interfere with the write process of the cover art file and end up in a corrupted file that causes the display freeze. I will try to reproduce that behaviour when I find some time and revert. It should be fairly easy - change tracks (with different cover art) and do nothing else on the remote and change tracks and play with the volume slider shortly after.

Kurt

Thanks, This helped me to reproduce the issue. I have not fixed it yet, but at least I can cause it now.

Done some further testing and can confirm the above. If I change tracks (with different cover art) and wait until the cover art updates on the DS display nothing happens - no freezes. If I use the volume slider in between track change and cover art update on the screen, screen einer freezes or other strange things happen (volume controls gets very slow, no cover art at all).

Good that you were able to reproduce the issue.

Kurt

Looks like I might have a fix for this Issue. I will be testing it over the next few dauys, and then it will be added to the next release.

Dennis

Thank you all.

Thanks Dennis! Excellent that you have a fix! Thanks all!

The freeze issue is definitely fixed and willl be in PIC code 1.1.7. I don’t know when it will be released to the public.

Dennis

Thanks Dennis. Good thing you’re on the job.

Oh, so you mean it needs to go to beta first?

No it will be in the next release. When ever the powers that be decide.

Dennis

In the for-what-it’s-worth department, I had a DS screen lockup recently that occurred when playing through the Bridge with JRiver on the host machine and I had changed to and from high resolution to RedBook. The music played through the Bridge just fine, but the screen never updated.

Also, I do have the problem where for the life of me I can’t rename the Bridge input channel. It reverts back to a blank or just one letter of the desired name. I did note that it counted blank spaces as input digits and I tried to erase all the blank digits, but it’s hard to do if I can’t see them.

Anyway, the name I gave the Bridge doesn’t appear on the front panel.

Sounds good, though!

This should follow the bridge friendly name. I am looking at the UI issues

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Among the issues I have with my PW Transport, it, too, sometimes writes only a partial cover art pic to the screen and then locks up, requiring a power off/on. Then I have to find that newly corrupted BMP file on the SD card and delete it or playing the same disc again will lock the PWT up again.

I know that’s a PWT topic but the symptom is very similiar so thought I’d mention it here.

Thanks -
