Firmware updates and fixes for the new Directstream MK2

@tedsmith Ted, just reporting some crackling issues I’ve found with my Samsung Frame TV, maybe the PS audio team can investigate for future fixes.

In Samsung Frame TV’s Youtube app, just navigating up and down, left and right will have pop/crackling noise before the “ding” or “dong” from within the Youtube app in my TV’s OS(latest version. )

Edit: forgot to mention it’s via optical input into MK2 from the TV

Thanks!

I can’t guarantee it, but I suspect it’s fixed.

Hi Folks,

I have both my PW SACD Transport & my PW DS DAC mk2 plugged in with ethernet cables, and I think they both recognize them. What functions does this give me, pls?

TIA!

OK… I found a new USB thumb drive that works great for FW updates. All FW is seen when this drive is inserted. Works right out of the box. No formatting needed. Price is good also.

At the moment, nothing. We are told that in the future firmware upgrades will be available via Wi-Fi or ethernet.

That WiFi card is the noisiest thing in our MK2. I disabled mine and am keeping it that way. USB updates is perfectly fine by me. Not sure why they put this radio in a DAC.

The hardware supports powering off the Wi-Fi/Ethernet. Historically software updates with USB sticks or SD cards always had problems. Updating via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable has worked better for customers.

Do you still have to listen through different compiles or did that change with the Mk II? I suspect you answered this already, sorry, but I can’t remember.

For the 179 release I provided 50 compiles. After listening they chose the one I’d been using all along. I fixed everything I could think of that made the DS sensitive to various compiles. I succeeded to at least a reasonable extent. I don’t think they will be listening to multiple compiles in the future, but they are easy to build if they want to.

You’re a genius (we knew  ). I thought that was something uncontrollable (which parts of the FPGA are used by a compile)

No, it was timing jitter and noise generated by the gates themselves. I was getting pretty good at knowing how to do things to lower the generated noise and the jitter (The audio improvement in Sunlight was a change that was purely based on changing one clock phase relative to the others so that the bits we care about change when nothing else in the FPGA is changing.)

The Mk II has better power bypassing for the FPGAs, better separation of the different power supplies for the FPGA, less jitter between the digital and analog boards, another layer of reclocking on the analog board, etc. The FPGA being a newer generation of FPGA than the one in the DS Mk I helps as well.

Oh I may understand…so the compiles still behave differently, but the relevant gate noise is so low that it doesn’t matter much anymore? That’s great. I think the listening for compiles was quite an effort and probably not everyone can reliably and quickly decide between them. And Darren‘s gone and the boss has better things to do

Not for me. I like the fact that I’m in control of updates. That WiFi is noisy. We did some measurements and had to turn it off.

Do you have a MK2?

No. Anyway I was interested.
A friend has one and we compared a bit. Will be interesting shortly as then they are quite on the same level of other treatments.

You will be able to be in control of updates (and be able to choose which) when using Wi-Fi as well.

I understand. Still I will never enable the WiFi. USB upgrade works great for me.

I’m kind of with you on this, Jeff. I look at the WiFi feature as a convenience for those who want to use it. But for me, the fewer things on, the better. Knowing Ted, though, I’m sure the WiFi hardware does the least harm as he can manage in the design.

That radio is a source of noise. Noise is a problem in a DAC as far as I’m concerned.

I too will never use the Wi-Fi.
