Holo Red impressions

Just updating folks on the latest…not particularly concerned and not trying to stir things up or make this speed bump out to be a “big deal”…

I understand but there are those that will try. At least it doesn’t require “special” USB sticks or SD cards

Curious where/how did you get this info?

Hello All,
Sorry to jump in, but is the sound that much better on the red compared to the ifi Zen Stream or Roon through a new gen Mac mini? I have a Denafrips Venus 2 with I2s. I would use this connection to the Red? I stream Qobuz and Tidal. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Regards
Jeff

Jump in with both feet, please.

Personally, I have no experience with the iFi Zen, Danafrips Venus or using a Mac mini as the server.

My server is an iMac though; and I am switching back and forth between the Holo Red and the PS Audio Bridge II Ethernet card to stream from my iMac and NAS. I use Roon an JRiver Media Center (both are hosted on my iMac) to stream my files and I also use Roon to grab files offered by Qobuz and Tidal.

FWIW, I have been unable to declare the Holo Red to be a consistently “better” streamer than the Bridge II in my system.

I will say this though, the Holo Red is very good with Roon and sounds excellent.

Regards.

Thank you for the quick reply. I really wanted the Holo Lens, but that doesn’t appear to be avail for a while. I really am most interested in the i2s connection to my DAC. I have PS audio M700s with a Rouge Tube preamp.

Thx
Jeff

I have listened with the Red’s I2S and USB outputs feeding the PS Audio DirectStream DAC.

I have not noted a preference so far.

FYI.

I think the overall impressions that I’ve read here and elsewhere is that the price is good and the performance is good. Sure $799 or whatever is, can be a lot of money depending on your perspective, but each of us has our own snowflake, and many of us have been using “endpoints” or DDC’s for years. The Red seems to be holding it’s own against some devices that cost more.

I have to say I am getting very tempted!

Good point and I’m curious if Red owners will find the AL enough an upgrade to switch.

The Red is backordered again waiting for the next lot to come from China. Worst case if someone doesn’t like the Red is a $100 loss by selling it on the Roon forum.

I imagine at this point, the AL has missed some of it’s target audience. Perhaps the delay is because there’s been a decision to add USB as an output (GASP!) But, if folks are still interested in the AL they can use the Red as part of the trade-in towards the AL. We’ll know if we see used Red’s showing up on the Music Room.

You must have a killer Bridge2, or your Red is not as good as others

It is still within 30 days of free return right? The bad news is you may have to get a streamer that costs more to beat Bridge2. I bet my Summus2 will sound better on yours. When I am ready to upgrade I will let you take a first shot of mine (for a fair price and no return, of course!).

Or, I am just not discerning enough!

I will be pulling the Bridge soon to see if that gives the ‘Red an edge.

I hope it does so I can go ahead and install the JK Richard’s power supply board, which reportedly lowers the noise floor.

Another question for you. Did you say you have not heard a difference between I2S and USB inputs on DS?

There is something not right if that is the case. On DS my two inputs the SQ was day and night difference. I banned listening the USB input forever!

Who knows, I might just have to take you up on that offer.

Regards.
