The rattling noise is most likely caused by some warping of the disk. You can use JRiver to copy the CD or Exact Audio Copy. It will make a clone of the disk and use extraction of the data to do so. The advantage of extracting the data is it is done at a higher rate of speed and will often allow you to get the data off the disk and get around some errors that will not properly correct when played on the fly!
