Issue with Snowmass 3.06 (and Windom), killing sound randomly on USB input

Odd, I use the Matrix, DSD and Windom. It sounds superior to the Snowmass version I previously loved. On both my Sr. And Jr…
Tonight I put a network cable on Jr. and fed it from my Roon server. Nice sound again. I wish we knew why some have no issues and some do.

Could be something as simple as the USB board starting to go.

Windom sounded superior with Matrix too at first.
Bad usb board/transmitter is also a possibility but then why Yale works everytime? Makes no sense. And now as I am aware of usb problem I don’t keep any FW load if usb is not working.

One time I got 3.06 working with basic usb cable,then changed Curious and silence . Then I put basic usb back and no sound from there anymore either.

@Somppsa:
The thing with my Windom load was I followed the recommended load method to a “T”. I am also discussing the issue with Innuos as well just in case there is a bug associated with the Zenith Mk III.

The little i heard of Windom I liked, kinda of a teaser considering the unit is now not playing up to snuff. It’s in a box and will be going to the Mother Ship.

I’m guess the problems you and I are having are related, just manifested in slightly different ways. At least I have an alternative DAC that I am happy with.

I’d suggest you reach out to Mark Simpson at PSA Customer Service. Since your unit will still accept FW updates possible he can forward a couple of SD cards with Bonafide Windom and Snowmass FW.

@dawkinsj
That was partially my concern as well. Maybe the morning boot-up of both the DAC and Zenith caused a problem or voltage spike that was transferred across the USB cable. Presently my Zenith is playing into my Metrum Onyx via USB with no issues.

My DSD will be going to the Mothership for diagnosis and repair.

@weedeewop Your problem is definitely worse and needs to be repaired. I just have usb hiccups and normal bad loads every now and then like so many others suffer here also :sweat_smile:

Getting those original sd cards is a good idea and may solve my issues. Thanks for help.
Though I doubt it…many of us complaining usb no sound etc,well,we have something in common…Innuos :zipper_mouth_face:

In my case the Innuos was not the problem. Case in point hooking it up to a different DAC via USB and no issues.

@Somppsa:
Thought you might find tis helpful regarding your USB interface issue.

Have you and @Somppsa and @mycrowave shared purchase dates and serial numbers to see if there are any correlations to a bad batch of digital boards, just curious, thought it may be relevant

Good thought. We have not, but I’m willlin’.
From the serial number on my unit the build date would be August 2019.

What part of the serial number represents the date?

To a degree I am guessing:
PWS-A1-9HXXXXXX
The 9H would represent year 9 month H
9=19
H=August (Starting with A= Jan)
At least That’s how I’d do it.
:grinning:

LOL, so what would BL be?

I purchased the DSD in Feb of 2019 and they couldn’t ship it to me for a few weeks because there was a backlog. Maybe that is what the BL means :rofl: If I remember correctly, it arrived in mid March.

Maybe the B is an 8. That would make it December 2018

If you want to check your serial number for the date, look at the last block, for example 5G0032.

The first digit is the year, so 2015. The G corresponds with the month in alphabetical order. G is the 7th month (counting up from A), and then the last two are the unit ID.

Thus, 5G0032 is number 32, built in July of 2015.

Well if yours is Dec 2018 and @weedeewop has August or September of 2019 then probably not the tie that would make it an easier answer

Agree, as in 71 above.

Thanks all for your interest,

I bought my DSD this years January from Finnish importer,new unopened box. And unit product date is february 2015 ,so it waited four years to see the light of day. I wanted at the time silver color and dealer said it costs 1000€ more and needs to be ordered.

Quess what? I settled on black and got four years old machine :laughing:

BL= black?

I updated FW to Windom last week and am now experiencing random drops which require rebooting DAC. My setup Auralic Aries G2 > Directstream Jr. via USB. Hopefully there will be a fix coming.
