Recently, I have been evaluating the improvement of digital sources by inserting a DDS between a transport and the PS Audio Directstream DAC-1. I started the evaluation by using my Jay’s 2/3, which I have owned since 2017, but then in the middle of the process I purchased a Jay’s 3/3. I intended to write a longer review of my upgrade between the Jay’s 2/3 and the Jay’s 3/3, but I wrote quite a bit on the subject in my thread, also here on PS Audio, titled: Inserting a Denafrips Hermes between a Jays Transport and a Directstream DAC-1 using I2S
The part of that forum thread dealing with the difference between the two transports can be found primarily in comment number 38.
So, I will keep this short and just provide a summary of my overall opinion of my upgrade between the two transports.
To highlight the Jay’s 3/3s benefits over the Jay’s 2/3 is fairly easy. The Jay’s 3/3 can be summed up in two words, and those words are powerful and refined. The Jay’s 3/3 does everything as good or better than the Jay’s 2/3 does, only more relaxed, with slightly more spaciousness, with better clarity and yet with more overall ease. For me the Jay’s 3/3 provides a higher quality of enjoyment. The Jay’s 2/3 is no slouch in these areas but the Jay’s 3/3 takes all these quality areas and pushes them as close to perfection as I can possibly imagine.
The music just sounds like real, live music, no hard edges. As good as the Jay’s 2/3 is, the Jay’s 3/3 just does almost everything better. I literally don’t see myself buying a different transport anywhere in the future. Basically this is my endgame as far as CD transports go.
