Magnepan 3.7i vs 20.7

timm

I tried the BHK 250 with my Supratek preamp both SE and Balanced and didn’t hear any significant difference how that differs from the mono amps I don’t know but in theory it shouldn’t. I had a friend on another forum that ran the 300’s with a CJ GAT preamp for a while. Fremer tested them with a SE Dart preamp.

Anyone believe in ghosts? I attempted to demo the used 20.7 on Friday. No luck. The system had several failures. First off the VTL would not come out of standby until the 4th hard power up, then the disc player drawer would not open in use a demo disc I burned, and to top it off the preamp had a major issue. Dual mono but both sides would not come off 0.00 db!

The system is being sold from a recently widowed wife!!

Excellent experiential proof of a mischievous spirit.

This man’s system was 200K

Don’t give up. The audio ghosts are just making you work harder to get to Maggie 20.7 world. You will love them.

For a month or two at least. Then you will hanker for something different again.

Not that there is anything wrong with that…

Clearly the previous owner’s poltergeist has no intention of letting his wife sell the system to a new owner :grinning:

I plan to try again

Does anyone have an option on the Martin Logan CLX ( I have a pair of JL Audio F113v2 subs ) vs the 20.7?

I have never heard these ML’s but the ML’s I have heard 11A and 13A I found them to have thin mids

I had ML Quest Zs… I stupidly hooked them up to my VTL tube amps… sucked. Glassy sound… I never knew that glassy sound before… a good dealer said it was the pairing with tubes. I had no idea as I listened to them on beefy solid state. So… just beware, they may not pair well with tubes.

I sold them after just two months… went with the Magnepan 20s.

The midrange on M-L’s seems to improve with panel size. I heard a big difference with the ESL 15’s. The CLX’s are the best they offer, I think, but require subwoofer reinforcement, and the challenge of mating them seamlessly to the stat panels.

The JL Audio worked really well with the 3.7i’s I had. Even the 20.7 will need a tad of sub assistance in my room for sure. I was thinking of adding a second pair of JL Audio F113.v2’s in stacked form to speakers of either type. I am also waiting to take home a dealer pair of Legacy Aeris anyone ever own those?

I believe the clx only go down to 56hz. I always had trouble with that.

I find that 2 things really make the 3.7i sing. First, use solid state mono blocks. I power mine with Bryston 7B STs. You want powerful, high current amps. Second, I support them with a pair of Rel R328 subs. The subs provide the heft in the base. Connect the to the amplifier taps.

I am waiting to demo a Maggie 20.7 pair and a Legacy Aeris pair. Yes very very different, but the Legacy maybe worth the listen. I would not need subs with the Legacy I feel.

Do you have a location to listen?

Local dealer just picked up Legacy. So I’ll be taking home the Focus SE for a month to try at home. The 20.7 will be a used pair at someone’s set up. But I owned 3.7i for a year so I know the Maggie sound

@darrenv1070. I have 2 Rel Carbon Ltd subs with my 20.7’s and have found that the 20.7’s dont need much sub support. I am currently using the subs right next to the 20.7s away from the corners of the room by about 8 ft. Crossover on the subs is at 39Hz with only a few notches on the volume. I guess my messaging is the subs help but I was surprised by the amount and quality of bass from the 20.7s. Half the total size of the 20.7s is the bass portion.
