Miles Davis Kind of Blue best sounding !?

On digital I also have a Legacy edition with multiple alternate tracks and a mono and stereo release with the following notes, which look as if this could be the go to versions (tube recorder use from 3 track analog masters). It’s 24/192 from 2013. Unfortunately I can’t listen and compare currently.

The cool thing about the import SACD from 2007 is that it’s a surround/stereo hybrid. At least it’ll be fun interesting to take for a spin in that way. I don’t strive for these multichannel releases, but they can be an adventure when it’s an album you know like the back of your hand.

I’m listening to the LP, Analogue Productions UHQR version. It’s nice. In no way lives up to the hype. But it’s nice. $100. meh.

Well except of one SACD and the above mentioned hires release it’s the only LP from the 3 track and this is better sounding than all the versions from 2 track imo, but how much certainly depends on the setup.

What I also often hear is the Mono 180g Record store day release mastered by Ryan K Smith as far as I remember. There are also the two differently EQ’ed Sony Legacy 180g by Kevin Gray, but they are also from the 2 track master.

Ronald, curious what you have that beats it.

I mean, dang - this album is worse than Dark Side.

ballpeeeeen hammer would beat it easily.

Actually, my very old copy on thin-as-fly-paper vinyl that I bought for $3.99 at Princeton Record Exchange a month ago sounds pretty fine.
I continue to be underwhelmed every time I listen to the UHQR.

You mean some of these? I like the original harvest pressing best.

Oh wait, this is a Miles thread…
You mean these? I actually think the UHQR has good separation, but the older Columbia pressing sounds just fine.

I have a Toshiba EMI DSotM that sounds fantastic. My Miles KOB UHQR went to my daughter, still waiting for the second copy for my other daughter. I have no idea how it sounds as she received it unopened.

For KoB on vinyl, I have that UHQR vinyl from acoustic sounds as well as the sony legacy one. Both sound great.

On CD i have the standard one I’m sure everyone has (I also have it on SACD), and I just picked up the Japanese UHQ “Superior Crystal Sound” CD.

My CD/SACD player is decidedly mid-fi (onkyo), and for the most part I just use it as a transport to my Denafrips Pontus II DAC. I’ll see if I can detect any differences. I’m also going to see if I can tell a difference between the standard CD and the UHQ CD when ripped.

My guess is no, so I’ll be pleasantly surprised if i can!

Not sure if the mastering is any different, or if it’s just special because of the manufacturing process of the CD.

I pulled out the 1997 Sony remaster (CD) of Kind of Blue today and forgot how much I liked it. Liner notes mention tube electronics were used and it’s quite nice.

Ted, can you post a backside picture of this SACD, when it was reissued? Reason is, on discogs I could find no non-hybrid SACD that has a different mastering (the usual Cuscuna/DADC Austria glass mastered, Presto tube recorder) than many other hybrid or CD releases available from different years, going back to this mastering.

I don’t know if this is the one Ted was talking about, but it’s a non-hybrid SACD that Sony/Columbia/Legacy issued in 1997.

Yes, same text as on the one kerosene mentioned above (CD from 1997).
That’s why I wonder about that non-hybrid one Ted mentioned that’s not mastered as all others.

This is the SACD Ted was talking about:

Thanks!
Interesting, as also a Cuscuna production (ok he’s very often involved) but no mastering credits and no three track mention.

That’s interesting. My '97 non-hybrid SACD has the same record number (CS 64935), but it lacks the silver slip cover the Discogs entry mentions, and the one I have includes an alternate take version of “Flamenco Sketches” that the Discogs one does not.

You’d think that all the various reissues would at least be given different record numbers. This is way too confusing for me. Good thing I’m not a collector.

The SACD in the link I provided does indeed have the alternate take of “Flamenco Sketches”…

Perhaps I’m not thinking this through, but the Discogs linked version states, released in 2002, yet the back of the case indicates a copyright of 1997.

So the 2001 SACD is the same remix/remaster chain as the 1997 CD?
