I’ve read some of the essays in The Virtue of Selfishness.
Sad Lovers and Giants - Epic Garden Music
I like the thread and all the twists and turns it’s taking
I’ll throw one into the ring - Benjamin Clementine. I’d recommend starting with the album At Least for Now. If you just want one or two tracks to start with, go for I Won’t Complain, London, or Cornerstone.
Wow, popular thread…
Raul Malo and Maria McKee.

I saw Lone Justice when they opened for U2 at the Rosemont Horizon on the Joshua Tree tour. After they were finished, I turned to my buddy and said, “Wow. Okay, I could leave now.” We didn’t, obviously, but they put on a great show. I had Maria’s solo stuff but it appears to have gone missing in one of our moves.
The Mavericks were big locally when I was finishing school at U of Miami in the early 1990s. One of my good friends was huge into them. I arrived late to the party, sadly, and never got to see them live. Raul Malo has one of those HUGE voices. Great call. If you haven’t heard their cover of “Hot Burrito #1”, drop what you’re doing and go find it now.
Hot Burrito… off of The Nashville Acoustic Sessions… you are a connoisseur. I think you and I are the only folks who purchased that record. my favorite off that album is Early Morning Rain… but Hot Burrito #1 is a close 2nd.
One of the best performances I saw of both Raul and Maria were solo… just each with their guitars at tiny place in Philly… real pros.
Peace

Just discovered Melody Gardot on Qobuz. Her first album “Worrisome Heart” is my favorite. Qobuz classifies her as “vocal jazz”. Something about her voice keeps me coming back to listen.
Music is infinity…
Mick Hucknall.
And I’ll wait for all the newbies to look that up.
Pee Wee (Charles Ellsworth) Russell. Not an unknown, but as the years go by less known, and a true individual, and a wonderful musician.
One of my favorite albums is one where he plays his compositions, “Pee Wee Russell Plays Pee Wee Russell” . . . .
Louis Prima said this of Russell who was in his band at a seminal time in Prima’s career: “I was fortunate in having [him] with me . . . the most fabulous musical mind . . . . I’ve never run into anybody who had that much talent.”
A nice bit of info:

Sophie Zelmani. Just amazing whisper like voice and excellent recordings.Try Soul album but they are all good.
This might miss the mark a little, but I am a huge fan of Lyle Lovett and his stories (songs). The musicians he surrounds himself with when performing live with a “band” are world class and the music is a real treat in person. I could be wrong, but he seems to fly under the radar in terms of recognition. Not everyone’s cup of tea, I suppose.
If you want to get a sense of the man and his music, check out the records, “Lyle Lovett and His Large Band”, by Lyle Lovett and his smash hit record, “Joshua Judges Ruth”. “Since The Last Time” on JJR is quintessential Lyle Lovett, and one of my favorites.
I think some dismiss or overlook him as a “Country Singer”. A mistake, in my opinion…
Enjoy the music.
“BadBeef” He bemoans I don’t like him. Well, the dream would be us making amends and then recording with him at his But and Ben (non Scottish contingent will have to google). Then - ‘Bad Laird’ - on the road. The ‘Alphonse and Gaston’ tour. Playing to packed-in bus shelters all over the States. My kinda heaven
I am also a big Lyle Lovett fan. Good call. I will play some and post them on the music thread.
I have seen him live a coupe dozen times. Joshua Judges Ruth is fairly well produced and recorded.
The cello parts can be mesmerizing, especially live, or on the IRS Vs.
Eric Church. He is not unknown now by any means but is a very good musical storyteller. Also like Lyle Lovett a lot.
You can have my girl just don’t touch my hat!
“…a couple dozen times.” Wow.
Regards.
Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree fame).
The BBC interviewer referred to him as one of the most successful artist no one has heard of (or something along those lines). To me, that remark is more an indication of how “boring” mainstream music today has become.
FYI his 96/24 albums sound awesome coming out of the DS Snr.
Martin Sexton… Americana at its finest. His live shows are awesome!
Thank you for all the recommendations. Since I lost WNKU here, my musical discovery has basically come to a standstill.
