New AQ Mythical Creature Interconnect Cables

My new amp and preamp will come with top of the line power cables designed specifically for them. This is a most welcome change. My amp, soon to be amps get plugged directly into special dedicated 20 amp circuits that I had added when I built my home. My P20 powers all the rest of my gear and it will require at least a 3m power cable.

Between the speakers above the gear I have large diffuser panels that I believe will need to be removed when the Extremes arrive.

After messing around with tube traps and different diffusers I find I prefer not using them. I put them in place but prefer the sound with them gone. It was amusing to me seeing the video of the first pair of PS Audio FR30s where step one was to remove tube traps from the corner. I know many people believe in tuning a room. I wish my room was symmetrical more than anything else. I have it on good authority that room correction is largely unnecessary with Extremes. With my current speakers diffusers on the nearer right wall help tremendously. But they occupy the space my gear will move to. Hmmm.

Perhaps the gear and racking will be enough diffusion.

I wonder how much the visual dissonance of gear between the speakers matters. Maybe moving it out to the side let’s the brain not work so hard to maintain the ā€œvisual illusionā€ against what the eyes see? It’s got to reduce required brain power at least a little, right?

I think it depends on your tweeters. The metal domes vs fabric usually need rolled off. But it is a preference. The OFE was a blanket over my speakers with 48 fabric dome tweeters. . The OFE Gen 2 IC is good but not comparable to UPOCC in my system.

I hope you have a bewared set of SPTPC cables. They operate in a different zipcode

Thank you Bob, I received your email and have just sent back to you my answers.

How strange is life! I started a thread about new AQ Mytical and just ordered to Bob XLR iconoclast UPOCC… Let’s have fun and eventually comparisons…

I will be curious to read your findings and i will be surprised if the iconoclast is superior to your current interconnects. No offense to the iconoclast people or cables.

That’s the beauty of my speakers. No tweeters no cabinets just beautiful music! They do need help in the bass department tho! Maybe it’s the zip code. Lol! Seriously tho the SPCTC are very good sounding I prefer the AQ Thunderbird over it. It made me wonder if I would like the Dragon speaker cable on my speaker? Luckily financial constraints will prevent that from happening. I did reach out to Galen and from his response I believe the Gen 2 would sound better on my system.

The removal of the corner traps in the original FR30 video was my system. Yesterday, I put them back and I may keep them there. I, like you, have a ā€œonly if you have tooā€ approach to room conditioning and use mostly or exclusively diffusers in the room. I’ve found that you can only tame aggressive room nodes. Matching expensive equipment with relatively cheap bourbon seems the best antidote.

A sound philosophical basis for promoting musical bliss, I am sure…

It is interesting to hear your take on the Dragon/Firebird/Iconoclast comparison. The Dragon should be better, but how much better can it get considering how great the green Iconoclast sounds.

I’m totally engaged in music since Friday (it’s raining and my wife is so comprehensive). Here in Italy it’s holiday (liberation day - thank you American guys who helped us during II world war to defeat nazism/fascism and to reach again our liberty) so I’m running a non-stop listening session - the fool man in the basement! I’m filling a chart to fix on paper my impressions, just like school report. Unfortunately I have no time to keep all cables as long as needed, so I feel the pressure to experiment, evaluate and analytically listen listen listen.

What imediately obvious to my ears?

All three cables are fantastic, a real step above my previous AQ Fire and Recable Invictus.

Iconoclast cables shine in analog path for their magical musicality, neutralness, realism and ability to recreate a live, palpable scene with partcular width and depth soundstage. Music totally blew up through the walls. Galen is a genius, really.
I can’t explain in words how these cables can bring relax, easy and equilibrium to music. Engagement is the primary feeling, all instruments are in the right place, voices are vivid and palpable, details abundance makes the scene realistic and it’s so pleasant without any excess nor in high neither in bass area. Yes I can opine that there is a lack in openness compared to Dragons and FireBirds, even basses are less punchy but in a way you can appreciate not judging it as a limit but on the contrary as a merit. And for what concern soundstage Iconoclast cables are really impressive: wide more than room walls, incredible, and deep in a way you feel an intimate new touch with music, never felt before. Honest, real, no signatures, no colorations just music as it is. More club performance, with a restrict audience, than a concert crowd sensation. Rather then a studio room, too much cold and analytic, here I imagine an intimate concert with students and friends in a little smoky basement, with glass clicks and soft giggles on the background. When suddenly silences occur oh, what a black profound background then. These cables are made for music lovers who know live performance and love to recreate that kind of emotions.
SPP to BHK Preamp and BHK Preamp to M1200s are connections I definitely appreciate. Just ordered to @BobBJC another cable without any more hesitations.

FireBird cables have one limit: they are second to Dragons. Even if they excel I think there will always be a better cable so they are never enough! The cost is not an option now, just thinking about my ears (not my wallet) I didn’t fall in love for them. A bad feeling of exaggeration, uncontrolled power, too much muscles and warm.

Dragons. Ehm… here we are! One more time Dragons are Dragons in the same way you loved them for power cords you really hear a huge difference, a real improvement in sound quality. Openess, airy, separation and really tons of detail, detail, detail. Revealing yes but without harsh, fatigue or any kind of exaggeration that on the contrary I encountered with the FireBirds.
Oh man in digital path they simply overperform any other set up.
PST with I2S connection is my only listening area, so just Cds and SACDs no liquid music at the moment.
Here I really cried listening to Dire Straits SACD Love Over Gold, my wife said ā€œWhat the hell are there tears on your face??? What’s the matter?ā€ How can I explain to her? I’m so happy my 20 years old guitar son perfectly understands and said ā€œWow is like Mark Knopfler was here in the room, I can see his hand on the cords of the 1954 sunburst Stratocaster. Mom don’t worry it’s only rock and roll but WE like it!ā€. Never been more proud about my father’s role!
Dragon XLR cable IMO completes the digital path from DS DAC to BHK Preamp perfectly mating the Dragon 48 HDMI from PST to DS DAC. I can easily imagine it will become soon a new milestone here, as Dragon HDMI for I2S or Dragon HC PC for wall-powerplants.

Al I really suggest you to place an order for it, if one of your systems needs an XLR for CDs path in addiction to PST-Dragon HDMI-DAC combo. Don’t know for Gryphon sources but PS Audio digital chain really shines here. Just to try, it is worth.

And last but not least: SYNERGIES! What a wonderful mate or wedding between Iconoclast on analog rig (especially BHK Preamp-M1200s amplifiers combo) and Dragons on digital rig (DS DAC-BHK Preamp combo) all together at the same time! A new world for me.

Next days I’ll share here on the forum my charts, only numbers no more words, I’m not a reviewer, I’m a newbie audiophile without experience, I don’t really care measurements only trust in my ears and most of all pay attention to my ā€œItalian enthusiasmsā€ take my sentences with more than a grain of salt. You are warned!

To be continued…

Thank you very much!

How many times I used this forum to better understand this hobby, the real value is sharing. In my case with humility due to my technical ignorance and lack of experience.

Even if it’s very annoying plugging and unplugging cables I’m impressed how they can change the sound in my system, cables (this time XLRs) really matter IME.

My approach is now totally devoted to personal tastes, emotions and differences I’m able to hear with my ears. I do not want to take into consideration other factors like market reliability in future, affordable price comparison, stiffness, geometry and design, boxing appeal, duration, cosmetics and so on. No, just back to basics: do you like what you’re listening to in this precise moment? And why?

I’m compiling a personal list according to individual parameters, I will soon share at the end of the week after a few listening sessions, before AQ cables leave my home when trial period will be unfortunately expired.

My aim is not declaring a winner, who am I to decide it? Just share my thoughts FWIW. I’ve learnt in this hobby it’s all system dependent, room dependent, ears dependent and so on.

Anyway reading other posts helped me finding I2S converters, fuses, power cords, dedicated circuits, isolation footers, EMI absorbers and lot of other food for thoughts. So I think I can contribute not only taking but sometimes sharing too. With all the limits I admit to have.

Your thoughts and words on the Iconoclast cables describe them much better than I could but I feel the same way. They are good for the long run and not going to leave my system for the foreseeable future.

I want to thank you whole heartly because your evaluation helped me tremendously. We have similar systems (PST/DragonI2S/DS, plus M1200/Dragon PC), so I understand completely your feeling regarding AQ Dragon and Iconoclast green IC. I would use the same description when I first got my Dreagon HDMI and PC. and my Iconoclast green XLR. They seem to work well with PSA gears, and they certainly work well with each other too.

I have two Iconoclast green XLR in the chain and they have made the system so neutral sounding, and I think this character may be their biggest strength. Enjoy!

Bravissimo! And, you raised a very fine young man! You ā€œshouldā€ be very proud.

Here we are again…

Unfortunately I’m at the end of my listening session to evaluate these 3 wonderful XLR cables:
Iconoclast UPOCC
AQ FireBird
AQ Dragon

Today my system is gonna change: a new P20 is on arrival (and my 2 old P12s are going away) so I have no chances to more listening sessions with comparable criteria I adopted until now. Tomorrow I also have to say goodby to AQ cables, due to expiry date for trial period.

I promised no more words, so please find here below just numbers I found useful (IMO) to help me evaluating their main peculiarities. As I already said it is just a personal feeling or taste the parameter I used with humility and able to describe their sound only in my system, in my room and in my ā€œlifeā€! No matter cost, flexibility, cosmetics, reliability or any other factor.

  1. From BHK Pre to M1200s

Here for me the keeper is Iconoclast, absolutely!

  2. From Stellar Phono Pre to BHK Pre

Here for me the keeper is Iconoclast. In fact I already ordered to Bob a second cable.

  3. From DS DAC SR to BHK Pre

Here for me the keeper is Dragon, simply stunning! Hats off!

Synergies: the incredible result I noticed is using together Iconoclast (BHK Pre - M1200s) with Dragon (DAC - BHK Pre) at the same time. A sort of Nirvana for me, I highly recommend.

Amongst many others I listened to:
LPs - Automatic for The People (REM) - Harvest (Neil Young) - Communique (Dire Straits)
CDs - No Need to Argue (Cranberries) - MTV Unplugged (NEGRITA)
SACDs - Love over Gold (Dire Straits) - The Girl In The Other Room (Diana Krall)

Hope that helps.
