New Firmware released

My DS was one of the firs 100 units with firmware 1.1.2 and FPGA 0.54 which is I believe firmware 5412. My DS did not arrive with an SD card with the firmware on it. Where can I find the original firmware to reload once I update to 6115 if I want to try switching back?

Odd

Odd,

I just tried to post the original version I have, but the forum will not accept a zip file nor the individual files.

Elk said FAT is perfect. Users report success with both FAT16 and FAT32. I doubt it is a formatting issue if the card you are using otherwise worked.

The files need be in the root directory. That is, not in a folder on the SD card. An easy way to insure this is to delete everything on the card and then copy over only the six files comprising the firmware upgrade. These are the files that need to be on the SD card.

Turn of the DS, remove the SD card, delete the existing files on the card, copy over the new files, re-insert card, turn DS back on.

Ah, that’s prob it, not home to check now, thks.

Elk, thks big time, I had forgot about the no folder.

Thx, Elk.

Paul, can you post the original firmware in the download section where the new firmware is located?

Odd, did you look in the section called "DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE AND GUIDES"? Versions 5407 and 51A

Looks like DS updates are there and in “DOWNLOAD PRODUCT UPDATES”. Version 6115

These two choices are here: Downloads – PS Audio

Those choices are just the FPGA code (it is compatible with the rest of the software, but technically it isn’t the complete set of software.) They should probably be deleted to avoid confusion.

Odd,

I just emailed the files to you.

  1. Perhaps I need to let 6115 settle for a longer period. If so, someone please explain why?
After a reboot the DS needs some time to get back to the "normal operation mode".

Thank you to all for the responses on the original DS firmware. Very much appreciated.

I am not bright enough to look somewhere else for the firmware unless its staring me in my face.

Odd

My dimwittedness wonders if its 51A which somewhere in my dimly lit brain I recall that being the first production DS firmware…

Damn I hate getting old.

Odd

51A was a “test” version that Paul released as a comparison to the “final” version.

stereophilus said I might do more firmware listening before I rush to change my cables in what has been a very stable and rewarding system for me.
Always a good idea. I don't recall if you said, but how many hours on your DS? If it hasn't gotten into the hundreds of hours yet you may also be dealing with the combination of the increased BW in the new FW and (what some of us observed as) the rough edges in a couple of spots in the DS which smooths out after burn in. I think I can see a relationship between the two adding up in a way that you've described.
You are right Tony, my DS has just over 100 hours burn in so far. This could also be a factor.

I might also see if bypassing my tube preamp makes a difference.

stereophilus said A few thoughts.
  1. I prefer 5412. It has less edginess, it is more subtle, fluid and is more musical. 6115 sounds more like the PWD2 to me, with a harder, more pronounced leading edge on notes.
Me too, rather hot for my ears but will continue to give it a try.

IME that means you have a long way to go. Thinking back on it, if I heard the DS at that point in my system with this FW I probably would have said the same thing.

Odd, the original version was 5407. It is posted in the downloads section (Download Software and Guides tab). It's the one that says "final." As noted, 51A was an alternative version that Paul posted for people who are inclined to play with these things.

I downloaded the new firmware yesterday and I thought it made the music sound light with little bass.

Today 24 hours later it sounds great!. Can this firmware need break in time?

On my DS screen it shows firmware 1.1.5 and the FPGA 0.61 .

Is that the new firmware 6115 or did I create a unique special version that you can pay me millions of dollars to copy?

The latest firmware is:

1.1.5 is the PIC (Control Processor on the Display card)

0.61 is the FPGA

00.06 is the XMOS / USB

0.61 is short for 0.6115 - the version of the code is 61, the compile is 15 but there’s only one compile of any version in the wild.

Stereophlis this may frighten you back to 61 but I like 54 better. Lmao. How about that I’ll bet you did not see that comin ??

but both do sound very nice.

Will there ever be a disclosure of the views of different beta testers or will the names be withheld to protect the innocent . I do very much want to know what some of them think.

Not sure of the names of the beta testers though.

The following please come forward if a beta tester elk, Paul , ted , Gordon ???

I went back to 5407 too. I’m thinking what I was hearing with 6115 must be system related? Either my duel concentric speakers or silver interconnects must not be playing nice with this new firmware? I dunno… but for some reason, the original sounds much better on my system.

I’ve been listening to both 5407 and 6115 all day, in extended sessions with each. I have some thoughts about SQ for both, but as my DS is still burning in I’m reluctant to overcall things currently. 6115 is growing on me. There is one thing that stands out though: 6115 sounds louder than 5407. Is that possible? (Yes, I’ve checked the volume on the DAC and pre).
