And Teac/Esoteric along with Luxman are the only ones left I know of and they don’t sell OEM.
Yes, Luxman is one. Not all that easy to list others off the top of my head. Most have walked away from physical media.
I noticed a lot of new audio titles are coming out on blu-ray Audio discs. I wish the PST could play them. I had an Oppo-95 that was not in use that I added to my system to play these Blu-ray Audio discs.
I believe those WAV files are meant to be downloaded to a memory disc to be played back with a streamer, at lease that is the way I use them.
What I notice when playing back downloaded multichannel filles on my MKII, is that they sound different than their 2 channel equivalents. I don’t know why exactly.
That would be something a new player should have mastered before entering the world stage.
What is the issue?
Would not one expect different files to sound different?
Well, the fact it sounds distinctly different to me. In the sense that, mostly, there’s no stage anymore and bass is lacking.
You know, I’m playing through Roon and don’t know if that’s downmixing things in the wrong manner. Like: surround sound supposes one in the middle, even when in a two channel mix. Same goes for the bass: apparently it’s left in the *.1, when converted to a 2.0 mix.
AFAIK, the DAC is not a multinational player and does not convert multichannel files to stereo.
Not sure I understand the issue you have identified given the functionality of the DAC.
Care to elaborate…?
Regards.
Of course! We were speculating and perhaps I didn’t think things through carefully…
In the thread, we have two lines of thought: multi channel files and a new player. IMO, the question was if that player may also reproduce disks that contain multi channel files and how.
In which case: either the player sends out the signal as two or multi channel, or downmixes everything to two channel, before transferring it to the dac. Or have the dac do that job, depending on how the signal is handed over to and accepted further down stream…
The processing needs to take place somewhere and will likely (?) be in the player, if so.
Anyway, my use case is a two channel systeem and I have a PST. And a MkII dac on which I sometimes play multi channel files (downmixed by Roon). Hence, my ‘contribution’.
However, I don’t know about the properties of a PST mk2: two channel or otherwise and can’t imagine PS Audio suddenly presenting a new device suitable for multi channel. But who knows!
Gotcha.
I am sure the “downmixing” by Roon is generating the difference in sound quality, but I certainly don’t know enough about the processing to know why.
Cheers.
