Just seen on the website that the PST is Sold Out
What’s up?
We should have them back in stock at the end of this month. Drives are getting scarce and Marantz has announced the end of life on their drive—which we and everyone else use. So we will be making a final purchase and then…
It is good to know that my PST will be a collectable item soon (in a more desirable silver color too).
Paul, you are such a teaser.
Cheers.
We really need a laugh button! I so wanted to click it when I saw dchang’s comment involving silver being the preferred color.
Based on the scant information I’ve gotten the “and then …” is the unknown. I read that no other SACD drives are available for OEM use. My PST doesn’t get a lot of use, but I sure hope it lasts for another decade!
I’m with you—silver rules!
One of the reasons I traded in my DMP for the PST was the drive was no longer available for the DMP, and I didn’t want to end up with an expensive paper weight down the road. Bummer, here I am again. Hopefully the Marantz drive has a long life ahead of it.
Will the final purchase be used to produce more PST’s, or to service PST’s in the the wild if ever there’s an issue with the drive?
I will only play one SACD per day, and do a lot more streaming from now on. So the next time I play the same disc will be over one year from now
Little concerned as the transport I am considering also appears to use the Marantz drive…ugh…wonder when folks will switch to…don’t want an expensive paper weight…
I interpret the “and then…” to mean “and then no more SACD transport production”
Could be…
Yup. We’re holding back in reserve enough units for service for many years to come.
Great, thanks Paul!
An end to an era. I’m definitely not ready by a long shot to abandon physical media. But if no one will be making drives any more, just a matter of time before the drives in existing transports fail. Then what happens to the millions of cd’s still in circulation?
Time to rip all my cd’s to dedicated server.
A resurgence of interest in the tiny silver disc will occur, just as it has for the 12 inch black vinyl disc. Hopefully so much time does not go by that future generations do not spin the CDs on their edge in an attempt to get them to reveal their content.
Yeah could definitely be a resurgence in the silver disk, but I’d be hesitant to ever invest in another transport if my current one turns into a worthless paper weight.
I bought a cheapo Cambridge CXC transport as a hedge. It sees occasional use just to keep things “lubricated”. Believe it or not my Theta Data transport is still running strong. The only maintenance required is a drawer operation belt replacement. It is the only Theta product I’d ever buy.
I read recently that cd sales are up (here in the uk anyway) as Gen Z are getting into retro stuff.
