Could be, but for the time being I leave the ethernet hanging. I don’t see any reason to have an “online” power generator, except for monitoring which doesn’t exist (yet).
If you wanted to control the P20 with a computer remotely, you would need the Ethernet cable. If you wanted PSA to log data… not so much… I keep the P20 on all the time. PSA had this really cool data collection I could look at daily and see trends monthly… Hopefully they will get it going this year.
Well…as I feared…I spoke too soon. Yesterday evening, I turned on my TV (located on top of the cabinet that houses my P20 down below), and shortly after that, the P20 screen woke up all by itself and started its cycling. I touched the screen, and after about 3 seconds, the screen went back to dim mode and didn’t misbehave for the rest of the night. And it’s still dim this morning, as it should be.
Most strange. Since this happened right after I turned on the TV (4k 65 inch Samsung), I now wonder if this is digital noise. Yet I’ve turned on the TV every day for the past two weeks without this happening.
Who knows? Maybe cosmic rays getting through with our solar minimum…

The cycling I speak of has nothing to do with the P20 screen, they are separate issues. P20 cycling is turning my BHK Preamp ON and then OFF; a zone. The display has done many things every once and a while since I got it. Since there is no value in monitoring data a few months after getting my P20, I pay very little attention to the display. If I was as critical (QA) about this PSA equipment as I am with our navigation equipment we design, I would have fired a few engineers… this stereo stuff is fun stuff, not going in space or mission critical for our war fighters. I have recalibrated my expectations. If my my team’s designs fail, people die… this stuff is just cute stereo fun stuff… I lowered my expectation bar to my ankles. If SQ is affected there is an issue… the rest of it is just the way PSA rolls…
We design the H1 helicopter digital cockpit w/ mission computers. Do you think I would get a call if the display stared blinking in combat… now, I’m sitting in my jammies in my music room and the P20 display blinks… see, very, very serious vs. cute stereo stuff… at first I was disturbed… took a few times to sit back and recalibrate myself… reference to expectation bar at my ankles…
So, if the SQ is affected, there is a problem… the rest of the stuff falls into the inconvenience category… is it worth sending it back to CO to get another one that may affect SQ…
Try disconnecting it from ethernet… Who knows it’ll work for you too. By the way: You don’t use it anyway and PS Audio’s Powerplay website isn’t there yet either… In the meantime we’ll have to have faith in the “top brass”…
Yeah - I’m responsible for the design of the digital cockpit & mission computer; very, very serious video processing… 1500 pin FPGAs… versus very cutesy stereo stuff… big difference… just need to understand blinking display in your music room while sipping a cocktail versus being shot at while attacking an enemy strong-hold… Validation & verification of mission critical war fighter mission computer versus cute stereo equipment yeah no big deal we will deal with it on the next build… it is all about knowing your swim lane… it cost us a ton of money to make sure our equipment is perfect versus having it beta tested by audiophiles… people die versus people complain… need to shift perceptions…
…while shifting funds. LOL
You had me at “I’m responsible”…
All good… some need to get re-calibrated… the easiest cost in manufacturing any complex device is the design and build. The validation and verification are the real cost. Take very serious V&V away and it is cheap. Overlay DO254 V&V process on FPGAs and you will quickly see the development cost escalate. However, they will be zero displays blinking. When you are getting shot at in combat which V&V process would you want your equipment to be run through. It is all about perspective and swim lane… I can put up with the inconvenient display, software, hardware, and logicware hiccups I see for a less costly P20, DMP, DSD… all about perspective.
Well, I discovered that the last time the screen woke up by itself and I touched it to shut it down, the system locked up. But I didn’t notice for a few days until I wanted to look at the incoming power waveform. No response, but the sound was unaffected. So it’s a display and control problem that seems to be unrelated to the basic function. I had to do the hard (back switch) shutdown and reboot. Then, all back to normal. This time, I unplugged the Ethernet line.
Ronald, you unplugged your Ethernet. How long has it been, and have you had any more trouble?
Charlie
Like I said before: I had the exact same experience. I pulled the ethernet plug, restarted the damn thing and never had any problem whatsoever. I still have my sinus screens, everything. I don’t care whether I can control it from my browser. It’s a power factory, nothing more…
Still no ON/OFF BHKPRE (zone) cycling issue; removed the Ethernet connection (02/19/19; 2200). Happened once before removing the Ethernet connection and no cycling since removing the connection.
Thanks, cardri. So a month with no problem. I’ve started the clock on mine…
All good… I think of the cost of PSA equipment and what it does and then the minor inconveniences… I run a design team that I would have fired a few engineers if our stuff went out in the field like I have seen; however, got to look at schedule, V&V time frame, cost of products… combat versus music room cute audiophile stuff approach. If it affects SQ I’m on it… if they performed exhaustive V&V, the price doubles… that stuff is expensive… look at their competitors and what you get w/ PSA for the money…
Yes, military grade would be a million instead of $10k. Be glad you don’t work for Boeing right now…they must be having nightmares.
See, there you have it… re-calibrated. Also understand buying a Shuyetta Research Typhoon and Triton power conditioner set-up with 1/2 the duplexes as P20 cost $17K retail. In addition the SR power cords are another $3K each bringing the total to $23K with no display… swim lanes… all about swim lanes…
SR Typhoon & Triton
YUP P20 DOES IT AGAIN: MARCH 24, 2019 AT 22:00 SHARP: Display of P20 started to do stuff by itself for a few seconds. It ended on the oscilloscope page. After that no sinuses or distortion on either of the 3 screens. Ethernet still disconnected. Haven’t touched it since FEBRUARY 19, 2019 (P20 freezing up again?). Please @mattc and/or @Paul: Where are we on a solution for this…?
Ron - has any zone cycled ON/OFF yet? I have not been tracking display anomalies, just anything that affects SQ… I shut my displays off on all PSA gear… it would drive me nuts…
On the radar for my next purchase. I’ve dipped my toe in the Shunyata Research waters with some digital cables and they are great. Makes me want to look at their other products. Their background is in military electronics, and what they sell works on day 1. I looked at buying a P20 but too many problems being reported by too many people for my liking.
Read the pdf on their plant and the new peice of equipment they make that tests cables… a great read… @RonP turned me on to the SR Anaconda 1.8m 20A CX for my P20. No way would I buy another power cable not SR. I did that in conjunction with single 20A run with 10/2 romex for great room video and another run for my music room.
