P20 & P15 Regenerator Performance Tweaks and Digital Stream Enhancements, plus BHK Preamp

The tuning ring on P-20 power cord can adjust the Magic after your 3rd M-1 is broke in. Start at one index finger from back of IEC. More PraT closer to IEC more clarity further away.

Have I stated that the P20 is the best piece of gear I own? It’s absolutely amazing!

Don’t forget the size and position for placing the sheet is different for 220v P20s compared to 110v ones due to different position of internal transformer

Looking for pictures on the the web (don’t ask me to open the beast please!) I found this one from a UK 230V model

and this one from a EU dealer with Schuko outlets
image

Comparing to a 120V model image

So I’m a bit confused about the exact position of the toroidal transformer

Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but both the 110V and the 230V versions appear to have the transformer in the same exact position: in the front of the unit right behind the display.

Wait is the 1st picture the European and the 2nd the American or are both the European?

I’m afraid on the web there are internal pictures of the P20 not really related to models. External images may differ from 120V to 230V and UK from EU or US, depending on origin of the dealer publishing them. Internal… not so sure the same.

It seems they all use ā€œstandardā€ official images for the internal.

Anybody can share more useful infos about?

Thanks.

Working from memory (which is always risky) I think you can reach / feel / measure to the torroid center mounting bolt on the bottom of the P20 and use the location for reference on the absorber sheet
Hope this helps

Vmax suggested:

If you need to know placement is right feel for the center Phillips head screw of the toroidal transformer on. Outside bottom floor. Goal is to have sheet edge at distance that equall bisects the screws head center

Yes Baldy is correct. There are three holes in a straight line to choose depending on Diameter of the toroidal for its country usage.

Just need to measure to that screw center on your unit to edge of front panel. Sheet height equals that dimension and placement.

If I understand well it means that the sheet has to ā€œcoverā€ exactly half the transformer on one side (back), until the front angle on the other side (front), centered to the display (right/left). Is it correct?
A few minutes and I’m going inspecting under the beast…

Measuring under the P20 from the screw to the front.

According to it cutting the sheet at the same lenght.

I’m doing more A/B comparisons and the differences are not subtle.

I’m still liking more the sound without the sheet, yes I’m loosing openness, clarity, cleaner results and brightness the 3M can provide in abundance but I’m gaining musicality, relax and realism. Music flows more natural and less edged. And the silent background is simply magic, adding something that makes everything sound so engaging.

I don’t know why. Maybe the sum of cables, tubes and fuses in my system are working in a way the sheet dislikes. More experiments are needed and probably I will also try the tuning ring to find if it can balance better the sound.

I’m playing just LPs so from the digital side it might be different. My focus now is on vinyl. Animals album by Pink Floyd for instance I’m listening to in this moment is… is… digging my soul deep.

It ends up a personal preference. I just do digital these days and my vinyl is hibernating. Therefore no comparison point there. The sheet is quieter effect inside the unit in that noise floor drops more beiing inside the units faraday cage. The third fuse is also likely to change.

By the time your vacation is over the fuse’s will all be stable and you can tweak with the tuning rings or with or without the sheet. Usually the direction becomes clear with time. Fuse 2 break in really confused me and I was moving tuning rings but after break in original position of rings was best. But tuning rings are like having a box of cables to tweak from.

Yes Vmax I feel to be far from any conclusion at the moment and I’m still alternating the sheet on and away the P20 for more days. Probably I’m missing something. Or I simply need more time to tweak. Time will tell.
Meanwhile thank you again for your useful help and inspirational work.

When I had two Purples in the system, the absorbent sheet compensated for what I felt was a bit thinner presentation. The sheet also cleaned up the background and enhanced the soundstage. The result was clearly better.

Now with the two M-1 fuses plus a Purple in the system, the sound could only be described as a bit heavy and darker. I noticed this may be a signature sound from the absorbent because I noticed it during the tuning ring tryout. Too much of it will murk and veil the sound. So, I could understand some systems the absorbent tweaks would not work.

I have a feeling I need to reduce the absorbent in my P15 to find the right balance again. I am sure I do not want to remove it completely. This will take some work and I have no golf during the long weekend. Perfect time!

I tried listening to CDs today and I prefer a lot the sheet on the P20. Right the opposite way I found playing LPs.
More open, alive, engaging and also more clear, silent, wider soundstage and wonderful voices. Digital and analog seem to respond differently to 3M tweak.

To be continued…

This generator absorbent made my digital sounding more analog, so maybe it is more suitable for CDs and streaming. But with two M-1 in the digital system the sound is too warm with heavier ambience also.

I trimmed the 7050 absorbent sheet under the cover of P15 yesterday. I eventually settled with 4"X3" from original 4"X3.5" above the transformer and the strip fronting display from 1.5" to 1.25" wide. The depth of the big sheet remains at 4".

The small adjustment made an impact on SQ. the slight murkiness is gone, the veil is removed. The sound became better balanced yet maintained its details and richness. There is no further adjustment needed, I felt. Strangely the new sound reminds me of the sound of Purple, but better.

These fine-tuned absorbents are obviously very system dependent. For P15/20 owners who do not have M-1, the original @vmax’s setup works great. If you have an M-1 fuse in the generator, you may want to start with a narrower absorbent sheet to see if it works better.

This is very interesting. I have 4 M1’s in the system and I like things over all but find a nagging cloud in the mid/bass area that did not exist with the Purples. I might have to adjust/remove the P20 absorber with this revelation. Thanks for the research.

Glad to help! I did not know you have 4 M-1s; do you find much difference from three to four?

With the latest adjustment, I feel the need to order my 3rd M-1. I had the same concern as you but feel now 3rd M-1 will help more again.
