Depth for certain. Everything is more 3D. I took it out and the sound was diminished. Put it back and oh my. Makes no sense to me.
Yes it is incredible. Try a recording done in Qdound like Roger waters Amused to Death or The Madonna Album with Turquoise cover The Immaculate Collection. Totally unreal immersive. But it is almost as good as with anything else. Makes any album sounds ten times better.
I am listening to reggae, John Browns Body, album title āThis Dayā. The sheet makes the music more 3D and plants the vocals center and deep. Itās not subtle.
Yes it centers any vocal recorded that way. If a acapella group or choir it spaces them across the soundstage perfectly as any backup singers. It turns a P20 into an absolute power marvel. I love the recording space echos. It does nothing bad only improves recording
The first night i hit the best location for the absorber . I drank too much wine and listened to everything. I had to clean up my drunken postings the next morning but it was fun and still is what it does to music and a system.
I wonder if putting one underneath as well has benefits. Easy enough to try.
Directly above my P20 lives my now unused Pink Faun. The Pink Faun is a very large and heavy beast with lots of metal and components in it. Above that is the Grimm MU1 which completes me as a person. Itās odd that the sheet can make a difference. But then I was so very doubtful that an xpensive power cable would help between the wall and the P20.
I have mentioned that I am running a load of less than 300 watts through my P20 havenāt I?
Yes try plugging in the amps. I am running 750 to 800 watts wit a 8.8 amp current draw. No sweat. This absorber sheet is as good as a 5600 power cord to a P20. That is the crazy thing.
I have had the amp plugged into the P20 before and quite enjoyed the results. But when I moved the gear to a new place I heard a hum I never heard before. My solution was to plug the amp back into the wall. Iām going to try again soon.
Question, what is the breakin time for these 3M sheets?
@aangen There should be no break in time. Unless you have moved the sheet out of its sweet spot. I guess thinking about it, since it affects Electrical Magnetic Fields it is always possible to influence something differently like an FPGA or some sort of capacitor or other device which was in a EMF that is now being absorbed. My changes I thought I had heard, I chalked up to Dragon 48 HDMi or Dragon 48 Power Cable or a purple fuse. I have heard of people getting strange effects from other passive devices. I heard nothing bad last night. But it has been over 3 weeks since I first put a piece on my P20 then noticed it could be tuned by location relative to the devices internal components.
EMI and EMC can be strange and some other intermittent emission from another device or radiator could possibly cause an outside influence. Wifi or cell phone or other appliance switching on or off that we didnāt use to know affected our listening experience, Now with a lowered noise floor this new to us irritant is standing out to our ears since it is no longer buried in the noise we once had as a old normal.
What a dedicated bunch. I love this place
I now am looking at Synergistic Research Tranquility Pods. SR allows you to try them with no risk so what the heck? I may try three, one for my Preamp, One for my DAC, and one for my Amplifier. At $749 each they seem reasonable. Adding one to the P20 seems a good bet as well. They can go under or over any piece of gear.
I may be the first to try and install the AB7050HF material under the P20 top lid.
I seem to have run into a problem in removing the lid.
The back part of the lid seems to be connected a black strip that runs along the top back of the regenerator, just above the ethernet portā¦
I think we need Jamesh or another PSA expert to clarify how the P20 top is removed cleanly.
Certainly my old P10 didnāt have this issue.
Iāve stripped my system down so I can go no further until this is resolved.
Anyone know how to contact Jamesh quickly?
Iāll start a new thread
Sounds like they take some locational tweaking just like the 3M AB7050HF absorber. The reviews i found and read sound to be fairly equivalent to what the cheaper 3M absorber sheet adds to the P20 and the absorber is more easy to hide. I like the idea of the absorber taking away more than I do adding new EM fields with an active generator. Audio is starting to sound more like aerospace with all these electronic warfare equivalent devices that are going active now and trying to counter the enemy.
I will play with some more absorber first elsewhere. But please share results if you go with the SR tranquility pods. SR purple fuses do improve things but it seems like a small improvement compared to a cheaper EMi RF absorber. Interesting the SR outlet covers seem to have 3M EM/ RF similar absorber under the fancy composite as a seal over the duplex. I would love to see what is inside the electronic tranquility box to see if it is a light in a box filled with broad spectrum RF absorber or something more sophisticated. Seeing it is location dependent to work it seems very similar in technology just a fancier package.
I love to see your evaluation between the pods and sheets. If the pods is 10 times better Iāll put my order in. That way I donāt need to figure out whatās the best size for P15, and where to put it
OK, Iāll try the sheet to see what this sheet is all about.
From your reviews, Iām surprised that PSA missed this in their original design. Perhaps itāll be incorporated in the next upgrade.
Can one of you, @aangen or @Vmax share a photo of what it looks like, properly applied?
See post 88 for Temp install.
There are recent photos of temp installs. The basic P20 sounds great until you hear it sounding better and what it really can do for soundstage, spatial cues, vocals and instruments low noise clean power to the rest of your system. @sheridd2 is planning the under lid install today.
With your premium power cord i am sure you will enjoy it.
According to PSA, the P20 has small EMI strips located around the top metal cover.
ā¦see recent āRemoving Top Plateā post.
Ok ⦠I got the P20 top off and noticed the following.
Around the inside front of the lid edge were 3 little metal sections, the EMI strips?
The middle one could impact on the absorber material.
I decided not to do Vmaxās suggestion of folding a piece of the absorber over the front edge of the lid.
I thought this might interfere with the middle āstripā and cause issues when trying to close the lid again.
So I placed the absorber up to the edge of the lid, maybe left a tiny gap, to ensure lid closure.
One other issue is that the lid has 4 small black screws with the two at the front interfering with the edges of the absorber so I cut the absorber material around these screws so that the material would stick flat to the underside of the lid.
Got the lid closed and the system re-assembled.
I had time constraints so I was unable to take photos during the process.
Seeing as I had my home cinema processor out I opened it up and added another strip the same size as the P20 strip under itās top.
One other observation I discovered today.
I thought the narrow edge of the absorber was less than 8 inches so Iāve been using the wide width over my P20 during my testing on previous evenings.
I measured it today and found the narrow edge is in fact just greater than 8 inches.
So the piece of material allows for 3 pieces the recommended size of Vmax - 8 * 3.75 inches.
Testing later tonight.
Within the next week Iāll put some into my Panasonic 9000 blu ray player.
Is there an advantage to putting the RF absorber underneath the lid other than aesthetics? If I read Vmax correctly, it seems it could sit at the front edge of the top centered on the unit as others have shown.
It might absorb lower frequencies that canāt escape through the faraday cage and further boost performance. The shorter the wave lengths the greater the ability to get through small gaps. I think on top it is addressing magnetic field primarily versus RF internal of longer wave lengths.
