Wow 3.06 is a big sound space ,more open , detailed sound and notable bass, I thinks will be the better update on snowmas, thanks Ted and Paul ,
I must admit I was skeptical that there would be any change in sound for me going from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6. Maybe I’m just in a good listening mood today but I have been listening for a couple hours now and hear a noticeable improvement.
Smoother high frequencies without sacrificing detail. Jane Moneheit’s voice has never sounded better! Also, a more palpable soundstage. Great job guys (and gals)! A definite keeper for me.
I went through all of the 3.X.X versions that were released and I settled on 3.0.0 for the sound in spite of a few operational issues. 3.0.6 sounds good so far.
I double checked with our engineering team and you’ll be okay if you lose power in the middle of the update. The boot loader itself is unchanged with this update, so you won’t experience any trouble when you restart the unit - it should update as normal.
If you do somehow run into any trouble, just give us a call or email and we’ll make sure you’re back up and running in no time.
@cudfoo, we don’t expect any change, but expectations and reality don’t always line up when it comes to this sort of thing. Basically we only changed a small handful of lines of code in the PIC. Ted’s work in Snowmass is untouched.
But this has been the case for all the Snowmass versions and yet folks report differences, so clearly the PIC code has some impact on performance. We’re just now entirely sure how that is.
ok thanks.
Schroedster,
Do you listen to the firmware upgrade to make sure it has at least not degraded sound quality before being released?
We do, though it’s not as rigorous as the original voicing for a new firmware. For the initial release, we’ll have around 20 different compiles that get evaluated.
For changes only to the PIC code, we listen but won’t put a stop to a release for small changes in SQ.
First impressions. I’m re-listening to something I listened to yesterday (and thoroughly enjoyed). The biggest thing I notice is the lack of congestion during loud complex passages (I’m listening to the Mozart Piano Concerto #24).
The piano sounds absolutely wonderful!!
And I also am one who never went beyond 3.0.0
After installing 3.06 there is no sound out of USB and extremely low volume from i2s output. Can anybody tell what is wrong.
Check your DAC volume and attenuator settings. Might need to goose the gain.
Thank you. The volume setting stayed same at 91.
Updated to 3.06 from 3.0 with no issues. 3.06 has definitely increased SQ. Music is more 3 D and spacious sounding. There also seems to be a drop in the noise floor, as notes linger longer before decaying into blackness, and low level details are more noticeable now. Music has also become more organic and natural sounding, while also exhibiting better attack with less bass overhang. 3.06 is thoroughly enjoyable!
Thank you everyone at PS Audio for making these updates available for free.
That’s a bummer. Try going back to the previous firmware and see what happens. Then update to 3.06 again.
Schroedster,
Does the many positive comments about sound quality surprise you?
Or did you know all along how it would be received?
As suggested I reloaded 3.0 and it works.[quote=“st50maint, post:74, topic:10205”]

When you reload 3.0.6 take the SD card out and shut the unit down for a few minutes and then turn it back on all from the back.
I have followed all of suggestions but no luck.[quote=“mtakedamaia-eonet-ne-jp, post:75, topic:10205”]

Let’s assume that either your download is corrupted or something happened in the transfer to the SD card and do the following. Delete the download from your computer and download it again. Then delete the files on the SD card and do a full format not a quick format. Transfer the files to the clean SD card and try again. This time after the update is complete and you verify it through the front screen turn the DS off by the back switch and remove the SD card. Then power it up and try again. If that doesn’t work then try another SD card. I have found lately with some of the companies even new SD cards and USB flash drives are a crap shoot.
Just in case something was lost in translation: be sure to check to see if the 20dB attenuator is engaged: On old remotes the button was labeled “Filter” on new remotes the button is “DAC Level”
I just updated from SMv3.0.0 to SMv3.0.6 and my DAC volume was at 25, down from 100, where I had it set before the install. Since yours stayed at 91, I am wondering if you received a full and complete SMv3.0.6 install?
