Snowmass DirectStream Junior is now live

There is a video on download site. Just watch …

Thanks. I don’t have an old small one. Just an old 4GB one. Want to send me one?

If the answer is to upgrade a state of the Art DAC with an obsolete USB stick, I think we can all see the problems with that.

Agree with marcin that the small capacity drives seem to be the ones that work for me. Mine was 4GB and worked fine on the first try.

Redcloud was really good and loved the DSJ even then.

Snowmass is like opening a perfectly matured bottle of redwine. All the hidden expressions are finally showing and you just want more

And the 4GB one doesn’t work? Should work.
Maybe it’s a state of the art DAC, who knows, but the implementation of USB is old and poor and doesn’t recognize some big capacity sticks/sd cards.
My 10 years old pentax DSLR doesn’t have problem with the same sd cards

Nope. Doesn’t work.

Brand new PNY 32GB USB stick, purchased for this OS upgrade, simply not recognized by my September, 2018 DSJr which came with Redcloud factory installed.

Note that the online “How to upgrade the DirectStream Operating System” instructions require a USB stick “no larger than 32Gb,” formatted to FAT 16 or FAT 32.

bootzilla, we need a fresh version of the poll every day, so we can see how many folks switched from “nothing has worked” to something else ; )

Even based on yesterday’s at this point - only 20 poll responses (i.e. each respondent = 5% of the vote) it’s running three times as many updating without issue vs. “nothing worked”. Yet the thread is all about those with issues - understandably. And we don’t know about the other 115 people who have downloaded it at this point.

I always get a little uncomfortable when a thread becomes primarily a string of complaints, often half a dozen posters posting half a dozen times, until - hey presto! It’s sorted for any of the many reasons it may not have worked. Then you could go back and delete or ignore the majority of those posts, as they were often one of the basic issues - yet it persists as a string of complaints, and we rarely know what the actual sucess or failure rate ended up being. Skews things a bit. I suppose if it persists, Elk could divide into separate Issues Updating and Sound Impressions threads.

I believe people can change their votes (as the poll starter, I can change mine, although I did not vote in this poll as I do not own a DSJ). And yes, I agree, those people who voted “nothing worked” and thereafter get Snowmass installed should change their votes if that is possible (and edit their prior posts to indicate ‘problem solved’).

Go get ‘em!

Hi Paul. I would like to purchase a USB stick for my DSJr from you to avoid the issues set out above, but it is not yet listed for sale. Any ETA? And, will the product only include the Snowmass OS or will it be bundled with a prior-to-Redcloud version, again for the reasons explored in this thread above? Thanks…can’t wait to install and enjoy Snowmass!

It has enough memory to have at least a running good copy and a newer copy at the same time, it has a network connection which will be able to be used to do an upgrade, but will be defeatable if one doesn’t want the noise of a network in their system. It has a USB slot which should allow local upgrade (with new upgrade code which should avoid the current SD Jr brain damage.) Also I hope to have a play this “music” file which will do an upgrade.

FAT is what you want if you can do it. FAT32 often works if the drive is empty except for the update files since it looks enough like FAT to let the Jr get to the files.

Not seeing the poll but count me in the “it worked” group. Formated a 32GB drive before loading Snowmass and the first try didn’t work. Redcloud remained. Found a previous drive that had Huron installed and successfully downgraded the FW to Huron. Used the original drive with Snowmass loaded and voila’ I have Snowmass. Not sure it mattered but I upgraded Bridge before doing the Huron downgrade process.

Just updated my DS Jr. with an old 256 mb pendrive (i’ve tried previously twice with 8gb new with no results).

Wow, can’t believe how good Snowmass is…

Works here.
Not directly to Snowmass, but Yale first, then Snowmass with a brand new sandisk USB key.
Sound good.

Hey all…updated my DSJr to Snowmass last night. I’m using a USB drive I bought from PS Audio when Red Cloud came out. I just moved the Red Cloud files off of that drive (saving them to a folder on my computer) and then after downloading Snowmass just moved the individuals files to now blank USB thumb drive. While the DSJr. was still on, I plugged the USB drive into the appropriate firmware update USB slot and then turned off and then on the DSJr. It upgraded from Red Cloud to Snowmass in under 5 minutes. I had previously updated the Bridge 11 when it showed up for updating on the DSJr. Sounds great and can’t wait to spend some more time with my favorite recordings. Running Roon and all seems great so far with it. Thanks PS Audio for allowing all of us to better our equipment and hence the enjoyment of the music! The USB thumb drive is formatted MS-DOS (FAT32)

Hi Ted. I formatted a new 32-GB USB drive for a friend with a DSJ to FAT32 based on the recommendation at the below PS Audio “How To” link, which states that FAT32 is required. He reports that his attempted update from Redcloud to Snowmass failed. Is it worth reformatting his 32-GB USB drive to FAT (which will require a partitioning as detailed here), or should he seek out a USB drive with a smaller storage capacity? Thanks.

Here’s a Poll subject, boot - (needs turning into a good question) how many who use the Bridge are having problems vs. those who don’t? I generally don’t have an ethernet cable connected to the DSJ, and I don’t have thumb drive issues, update issues, etc. Could the “hardware differences” between units be use/non use of the Bridge? (forgive me if this has been gone over before - I would’ve ignored the discussion ; )

My brother had to do the Yale deal (he uses the Bridge), and I maybe have had to do it once a couple of years ago - don’t know if I had the Bridge connected or not.

I use the Bridge and had no issues updating my DSJ from Redcloud to Snowmass. I’m hardwired to my network for all my network units…that is switch, NAS, DSJ and i5 Sonictransporter.

Yes, I was asking if FAT32 was used to see if that was causing the issue. I’ve posted this before, but this is how quick and easy it is to format and copy the files over properly for those not familiar:
