Snowmass DirectStream Sr. upgrade - Available in the Downloads Section

Version 3.6.2 was released a while ago. There were several bugs and PSA retracted the version. Those of us with mcconnectsetup rolled back to a previous release. Without mconnectsetup, there is no way to roll back. mconnectsetup requires a Windows computer to run. Feel free to ask PSA for the link to the program (not clear why they don’t make it public but that’s not for me to decide). The current “official” version is 3.5.1.

Thx for the info.

Just wanted to share impressions after three days of listening to Snowmass.

Ted, you are a wizard!

Compared to Redcloud, the improvement is discernible in about three seconds. Cymbals pop out first; the leading edge of stick on bronze has a coherent energy I’ve never heard before, and I can follow their decays no matter what else is going on in the mix. When a high-hat closes it’s as if I can sense the chuff of air that’s squeezed out.

The soundstage which formerly began at the edge of the speaker plane now emerges halfway from the speakers to the listening position, and that additional depth provides a 3D field that I can mentally wander around in. The closeness of the soundstage also creates an increased sense of its height.

How can all this detail come through without any sense of hardness or etch or fatigue? I’m stunned.

Last night I was in the office and heard my wife walk into the living room and put on some Joni Mitchell. After half a minute she yelled across the house: “Holy f**k!” It was that good.

Thanks again, Ted and Paul. I am really proud to be a PS Audio customer.

I have 3.6.2

Yes…I assume you updated to 3.6.2 while it was available and never rolled back to a previous version. It is no longer available.

Wondering if it’s related to the sleep thing.

Possible. Don’t know. I installed Snowmass on Monday (haven’t listened yet). I have 3.5.1 installed on my bridge II. I haven’t have my DSD turn inadvertently since updating to SM. I also haven’t used my DSD since Monday but it is sitting in standby.

Just updated the bridge in my DSJr. Version 3.6.17.

Smooth update via mconnect. All is working. Music playing again

Snowmass upgrader here, just upgraded to 3.6.17 via MConnect.
Thanks Paul.

Previously running the “not quite ready” 3.6.2 release as I found sound quality was better than previous Bridge firmware.

3.6.17…installed.

I just saw what you did there.
…Whoa!

Octave Server in my future, can’t wait to hear what you guys can do with a blank sheet of paper.

Hi Ted, here is a question for you.

I purely use usb and it has already been confirmed that having the Bridge installed, or not installed can affect the sound quality.

What is your thought on whether usb sound can be affected by different versions of installed Bridge firmware? i.e. is it in my interest to keep Bridge2 up to date even if I don’t use it?

Many thanks

Chris

Sorry, just realised this a bit off topic

The differences in sound quality at this level are extremely system and user specific. I’d keep the bridge up to date just because as time goes on there are bug fixes and sound quality improvements on the bridge and they are unlikely to be making the system as a whole sound worse.

Thanks very much for your very quick reply Ted. I shall bear your thoughts in mind

i love the sound but it is driving me crazy to continually walk into the living room and see the unit has turned itself on by itself again…I need some sort of solution to this

Would leaving the unit on but turning off the display be an acceptable solution?

i would like to be able to put it to sleep like i have been doing until the new upgrade…not sure why it does this but i appear not to be alone in having this problem

Are you using Roon and is it still running when you turn the DS off?

Will try both suggestions.

Are you running an I2S interface to your unit from one of the inexpensive I2S adapter cards? And have you pulled the SD card out of the unit after upgrading?

i wiped the card used to upgrade clean and then inserted it as i always have

Installed Snowmass a couple of days ago. Today I came home and saw the screen on. Sleep mode through the remote worked momentarily only. Using the blue button on the front panel keeps it off. This never happened before the upgrade.
