This sounds great guys. Have a family recovery right now or would be right there with you. Hope to start this weekend !!!
@andrewlightman - press the “dim” at the top of the DAC remote or access the DAC front panel and reduce the slider to zero.
I know what i’m going to be doing most of this weekend! Have tried it with roon, redbook cd, sacd (along with DMP 3.10 upgrade) and I am VERY impressed. Every source sounds great and better. What a wonderful gift and many thanks to Ted, Paul and the whole PSA team.
@sangwoohahn - now disable the Roon Sample Rate Conversion (SRC), “upsample to off”, and let Ted take over the upsample. You will not hear any pops and it sounds even better. This is what Ted was working so hard on… getting away from Xilinx upsample module to an upsampler from scratch that Ted coded… amazing… If you are running Roon, need to disable SRC.
Listen to The National’s Walk It Back and marvel at the soundstage. The sound texture is amazingly rich. This is more like a 50% improvement.
The sub-base is really well defined and separated. What is you guys do to make such an improvement on the bottom end?
Next on deck is the recently remaster ex Sgt. Peppers.
Hey. Since I’m sidelined for a day or so - can someone comment on the bass compared to red cloud. I thought the first noticeable part of red cloud that I really enjoyed was the overall bass and fuller presentation.
But - I’m all in on deeper more 3D soundstage.
The base is textured and incredibly detailed. The DAC is giving my RELs at workout. In my case having monos that can push 800 Watts helps. Real dynamic range. Increase in base differentiation helps with the soundstage.
@Tedsmith - After disabling the Roon Sample Rate Conversion, zero pops in 20 tracks. If you are using Roon you need to disable the SRC. Ted - your build is just amazing… Holy Crap! Like buying another, better DAC…
Homerun!
@andrewlightman - yes, my pair of REL S3/SHOs are loving it… They are seamlessly integrated w/ the Sonus Faber Guareni Evolution main speakers. Roon Nucleus+ is the bomb. I can’t wait till they integrate Qobuz and we get to listen to real hi resolution.
@sangwoohahn - yes, perfect… just disable it and let Ted’s great upsampler do the work… amazing and zero pops. You need to investigate the DSP parametric equalizer and convolution filtering. I see you have the equalizer off…
There is 4am here in europe but i havn’t got any problem with instalation. Now i am going to sleep again .
Focusing on voice only atm… all Roon/local, hi-res. DMP and vinyl later.
GOBSMACKED, the detail & warmth.
Like the DS grew a pair (tubes, that is).
Stacey Kent- Hushabye Mountain
Kristina Train - Dark Black
Nat- Stardust
Frank - I Get Along Without You Very Well
Julianna Raye - I Carry You With Me
Melody - Worrisome Heart
Julie London - Say It Isn’t So
X-Ray Spex- Oh Bondage, Up Yours! (kidding… great tune tho…)
Alright gentlemen, looks as if you’re all listening to a winner! I’ll order a card as soon as I can!
Yes, until now I’d been using the stock upsampler/downsampler that Xilinx provides. It’s a pretty nice piece of software and does most things very well. Still I wanted better control of when things happened and since I know far more about what my filtering needs are than it does, I can save some work in places and do more in others to get a better result. To be clear we’d get the same mathematical answers with the same filters and inputs, but I’m doing some things their software wouldn’t handle.
In fact Snowmass was a necessary step towards the TSS. I’ll keep all three running the same algos at least as far as their hardware differences will allow.
If there were other questions I missed while I was out to dinner you can PM me or just ask again. I’ll do combined answer posts now and then if I’ve been gone for a little.
After a 2.5 hour listening session with Snowmass I can say with joy “outstanding”.
I had no problems with the upgrade and no anomalies during any song (all Tidal via Roon - no Roon upsampling ever used by me).
I heard newly discovered additional sparkling piano in the right channel during Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head”.
The greatest benefit for me using Snowmass is the better sound and dynamism of the music even at lower volume levels.
Thanks for the superb free upgrade.

Funny, some of the comments sound like they could be attributed to tube rolling. And I don’t mean that in any derogatory sense. More ambiance, detail, changes to sound stage, bass control - they sound a lot like descriptors that I’ve put on different tubes that I’ve tried in my BHK preamp. @tedsmith - any idea when / if there will be a beta for the DSJ? I’m guessing it might not be necessary but I thought I’d ask anyway…
I don’t have any direct insight into the betas that PS Audio is running for Snowmass. I think Paul wanted to release both the Sr and the Jr at the same time or nearly the same time. I’m sure that the Jr isn’t too far away, but I don’t know if they have more work to do for the bridge or control processor.
I think the bass is improved a lot. Fuller and richer.
