Snowmass DirectStream Sr. upgrade - Available in the Downloads Section

Wow that is a strange issue. I have never had that occur on my system. I would definitely notice that as I have the speaker and listen position very precisely located.

Yeah, Sixpack1, same accurate set-up for me as well.

Now that you’ve reverted, go forward to Snowmass again. Rarely random settings are stomped during an upgrade and you probably won’t encounter it again when you upgrade again. I haven’t ever heard of a left right shift without the screen showing the balance off, but I definitely have heard of a balance shift after an upgrade that doesn’t really show itself on the screen until you move a little to one side and then back. If that’s the case you can probably center things and all will be well.

I experienced this once during the many Torreys beta code trials… The remedy came from installing one of the earlier releases, it was either Pikes or Yale - but I can’t remember now, but it redressed the balance. There was a ‘lot’ of back and forth with Torreys beta O.S. I’ve never experienced that glitch again. ‘You were the one who told me what to do’.

I experienced the same shift to the left. I downgraded to Yale, and then back to Snowmass. It still shifts left. Have been using the balance adjustment on the DSJ to correct…

Thanks for the suggestion, Ted! I loaded Snowmass per your instructions, and so far the balance issue is fixed, plus I get the improved sound of the Snowmass update! I’m gonna try not to mess with this too much, and will post an update in the next week or so if all remains stable, which is what I expect will be the case.
With much appreciation,
Michael

Hi Ted:
Is it possible to wipe the FPGA clean then reload Snowmass to a clean slate?
Thanks in advance,
Jay

The FPGA is “cleaned” anytime the system is powered off. Theoretically the flash ram used to hold the OS software can be cleaned if you have the hardware and the software to load it (unlikely) and any mistake and the unit would need to be sent to PS Audio.

Calling Snowmass v1, v2, etc. makes zero sense when v2 actually refers to 3.01, 3.02, 3.03, 3.04, and now 3.05.

Could PSA and everyone else please pick ONE name for each release and use only that name? Paul, I’m taking to you…

(3.0x is the only designator that makes any sense.)

Hi Bootzilla,

I looked up your system components. I was wondering: Why do you have the Matrix between your Melco and the DS…?

Greetz,
Ronald

Hey Ronald, see this topic

Hoi Wijber,
But why not connect the Melco directly to the DS. Is the Matrix being used as reclocker…?
Or is it just a better USB to “something else” converter…?

Don’t know exactly why but the Matrix does miracles to the DSsr. Just look around the PSA forum for more information and experiences.

● X-SPDIF 2 USB Audio Class 2.0 is a new designed asynchronous data transmission digital interface, which inherited the high quality of last generation to make it connect to the other devices through IIS directly. It crossed the quality lost of digital signal caused by protocol conversion, while integrated the high-quality femtosecond clock and FPGA processing unit, to realize a maximum of 32bit/768kHz for PCM signal and 1bit/DSD512 for signal output.
● The XMOS 8-core new generation X-CORE XU208 digital signal processing unit is the most advanced solution to USB Audio Class 2.0 digital audio with strong processing capacity for multi-core and multi-threading.
● The powerful XILINX SPARTAN FPGA assisting with XMOS to premium manage the clock and process IIS data, achieved the DoP code conversion and remove the jitter in IIS port.
● Two pieces ACCUSILICON high-quality femtosecond clock as basic clock source, and respectively work for 44.1kHz and 48kHz as well as several times sampling rate, which is controlled by FPGA to do the frequency division and switch automatically. Besides, femtosecond has an independent ultra-low noise LDO power supply circuit.
● The inner multi-level and multi-group LDO combined with solid-state capacitor, which can filter the superposed noise in the power supply. All the circuit units are supplied by the low or ultra-low noise LDO without DC/DC circuit to avoid high frequency switching noise. Even if using USB bus power supply, it can also maintain the high quality for the internal power supply.

Highly recommended!

The Matrix seems to be slightly better than the stock Singxer Su1. I’m hopefully placing an order for a Singxer Su6 today though. I have owned a Singxer SU1 with the DC power mod which worked really well with the Directstream Junior via I2S. I then sold it (mistake) and got a Gustard U16 based on various web reviews. It did not work in my system so I sold it. Now I’m about to try the Singxer Su6. I’m hoping it will retain the dynamics of the Su1 and maybe offer lower jitter (and therefore sound a bit more relaxed). What a crazy merry go round i have set myself on.

Please let us know what you think of the Singxer SU6. At this moment I own a Singxer SU1 (Magnafied) in combination with a DSJ

Certainly will keep everyone informed. I ordered the su6 last night. No idea of an eta to Australia though!
I haven’t heard the magnafied su1 but I imagine it sounds better then a stock su1

I have an SU 1 (stock) and like it very much. Was wondering about the I2S on the SU 6. It looks like it is output via ethernet. Is that true and if so does the bridge II handle that?
thanks

The I2S you want to use with the DS and DSJ is the HMDI (LVDS format) output on the back not the RJ45 output. There are 2 LVDS formats supported on the SU1 which are changed via some jumpers on the base of the unit. I think the jumpers on the bottom come out of the factory set to the PS Audio format. If not you can change the jumper settings to suit.
I personally feel that the I2S via HMDI is a revelation with the DSJ. Use a reasonably good HMDI cable that is compliant to the HMDI standards and keep the cable as short as possible. I’ve been advised that you are only meant to use 1m (3 feet) max but I am successfully using a Lindy Chromo HMDI cable that is 2m long and it sounds quite nice. I’ve played around with a variety of “audiophile” cables and there are subtle changes in the sound to my ears anyway.
I really liked the way that the SU1 worked with the updated Snowmass firmware. I am guessing that the SU6 will have broadly the same sound.

I realize I am very late to this party, however, I just got around to updating both my PS Audio Directstream DAC and DMP. I now have Snowmass (3.05) on the DAC (was Redcloud) and 3.13 on the DMP (was 3.09). I put on one of my favorite SACD’s , the Sticky Fingers SHM-SACD from Japan ( I must play this one at least 2 or 3 times a month so I really know this disc) and I was blown away. It was like I had never heard this disc before. Everything sounded better. Better imaging, better soundstage (especially soundstage depth), better transients, quieter background and I can go on and on. On the track “I Got The Blues” Billy Preston has an organ solo that I have heard many times, but this time it was like he and the organ were in my room! Ted Smith, you may have put yourself out of a job, I cannot imagine how you are going to top this.

I have nothing to do in this thread @JMK. I just wanted to let you know I like your name…! I thought of “bAsswHole” myself but didn’t get to it…
