Is that a Technics turntable? I love the old school strobe markers on the platter, you don’t see those much anymore.

This is quite a phonostage for that turntable…do you plan an upgrade for the Technics? It seems a little out of range compared to the rest…

Yes, it’s a SL-1200MK2. I bought it 25 years ago. I recently restored it and it got a new system.

I hear you. Would love to upgrade the TT, but the pockets are empty… At least with the phono pre I’m done
And: it sounds not that bad at all (means: yes, there is so much potential…)

In some urban areas, it’s affixed to the front of one’s automobile for where there’s a high density of pedestrian traffic.

Are you going to try it feeding your P20 with the Denali? Since my P20 responded so well to a power cable upgrade, I’m very curious.

@RonP - I have a whole suite of testing starting tomorrow when I get the D2000T & Sigma NR cable. Yes, I’m going to try that too.

Planned - long weekend, then trip to LA…

  1. SR Sigma NR vs. SR Anaconda straight up to the PSA P20
  2. SR Sigma NR feeding D2000T; then SR Anaconda CX feeding PSA P20
  3. PSA feeding D2000T with SR Sigma NR; then SR Alpha NR to each BHK300
  4. SR Alpha NR vs. SR Anaconda straight up to the PSA P20
  5. SR Sigma NR feeding D2000T; then SR Alpha CX feeding PSA P20
  6. PSA feeding D2000T with SR Alpha NR; then SR Alpha NR to each BHK300

What cable do you now have on the DAC?

@RonP -
SR Anaconda CX - PSA P20
SR Alpha NR - DMP, DSD, BHKPRE, BHK300s
SR Delta NR - (4) Sboosters & dual REL subs; get next week… right now AC05

Broderic, yes they are two of the SVS PB-Ultra 13s. The 3rd one is in the rear. This is the standard Rosewood finish by SVS. No extra cost.
I only use them for video. I run the Model Sevens full range with their internal powered sub-woofer, and the SVS subs off.

insoc, on the Vandersteen 7 system:
The L & R are 10’4" from each other (tweeter to tweeter,) and 10’ 4" to the center listening position.
They are both 43" from the side wall, and 80" from the front wall.
The sound stage extends beyond the outer speaker boundaries, and through the front wall. All with an image that locks in vocal in the center, about 5’ behind the front plane, and at ear height.

Should you decide to sell your Alpha NR cables somehow make me unaware of it.

Hi Philipp, how did you like the Musical Fidelity MX Vynl?

What has urged you to upgrade to the Pass MX17?

I am in for a Phono Stage, looking at EUR 1000 level, as I plan to upgrade my TT from Thorens TD105 to TD1601. TD1601 has balanced phono outputs, so I am also looking for a balanced phono stage, my Stellar Gain Cell DAC has balanced inputs. So the Musical Fedelity is one option I am looking into, maybe complimented with a Cedes Power Supply.

But PS Audio are close to releasing their Stellar Phono Stage but it is single sided only, which kind of defeats the purpose in investing in the balanced turntable and Stellar Gain Cell DAC.

What is your take on this?

I also find it hard to replace my TD105 that served for approx. 40 years well. Pretty sure same accounts for your Technics turntable which is simply an icon for good engineering and quality.

Rudolf,

the MX Vynl is a wonderful pre. I bought it one and a half years simply on very good reviews and ratings. It was rated along with pres that cost 3 x 4 times the price. It is fully balanced, you can switch setting anytime from the front, and it had the option to use a dedicated Upgrade Power Supply from Musical Fidelity.

As @jazznut rightly pointed out, for the TT and the cartridge I’m using, the Vynl was just right and the XP-17 is a kind of overkill. I hear a difference, but it’s not a “night and day” comparison. The XP-17 for sure offers more potential in the future, but only upgrades as room treatment, a new TT and another cartridge will show. But I will also sell my Vynl, so I won’t be able to really tell

What urged me to upgrade? It was NOT that was I was unhappy with the sound or missing anything. The Vynl would be a very good fit for more advanced analog systems than mine. The silly reason for the Pass was – yes, I admit it – aesthetics inside and outside (it’s like buying a piece of art), getting “done” with certain components, and then chance (it’s very rare to find in Europe as a used unit and the price was good).

So I guess, your TT upgrade will make a much bigger difference. The TD1601 looks like a great piece of engineering. It deserves a very good phono stage. Which one are you using at the moment with the TD105?

I’m happy to make a “PS Audio forum price” for the Musical Fidelity MX Vynl including the Upgrade Power Supply. Shipment to the Netherlands should be no problem. I have the original packaging and all accessories. Send me a DM if you are interested.

Regarding the balanced vs. unbalanced: My take is that I want my system to be fully balanced (but my TT is not… buh). But that’s again an “aesthetic” (or architectural) choice, as unbalanced can also sound good or even better. It depends on so many variables. But if you go with that new TT, I personally would go for a balanced phono pre.

This clearly does not help with the conflict regarding the new Stellar Phono Stage. There are no reviews yet to confirm SQ and other aspects. Maybe get the TT, keep your existing phono stage and wait until the first reviews are out? The TD1601 has also RCA out, and if the Stellar beats everything… audiophile drama at its best

PS: Regarding my old Technics SL1200 - yes, it’s an icon. That’s why I’m looking into getting a used 1200G (still unbalanced, but I’m OK with it) to explore the potential of my new phono pre: https://theaudiophileman.com/technics-sl-1200g-turntable-review/

Thumbs up for the Audeze headphones :+1:

Just completed some long needed upgrades to my system and trying to catch up to the digital age. If not for Galen I would have already given up on using the Bridge II and though I am not quite there, I am getting close. A few minutes ago, the last delivery on a new component arrived (Pass XP12) so I will spend the weekend playing. Many thanks to Galen, Ron and a few others helping me decide what and where to go on a limited budget. I had to make some tough decisions on where to spend and where to cut but I am expecting great things. And, thanks to Kurt, Paul and Scott, Klaus and the folks at Pass for helping make it possible. Damn, sounds like an acceptance speech… I had to repaint the walls, trim and build a new 2nd level addition to my audio cabinet to house everything. No place for my turntable at present…

I always enjoy the Wurlitzer look of Legacy speakers. It provides them with a warm friendly look.

Very nice, Bob! Love the look of those speakers. And monoblocks always look very serious to me.
BTW, I’ve found that msot Pass stuff is relatively insensitive to power cable upgrades, just ask Mark and Kent.
But the DAC is very sensitive.
