If the bottom plate doesn’t matter, then why does PS audio advertising picture not show the actual bottom plate that the buyer will see?
I wondered the same. A generous assumption is that it’s not a photo but a mock up - or a preproduction version.
My guess would be only on preproduction equipment.
This isn’t a cheap piece of equipment that’s been cobbled together for the masses, it’s cutting edge, the statement range of PS Audio’s product line. ‘The only PS Audio models not to sport a painted / finished lower end’ .. If there was choice of a more expensive, but fully finished PMG, with a resplendent looking bottom panel - or a rough looking, heavily marked, unpainted version. Which one would you choose. I know which one I’m buying - not the scabby one.
We all see things differently, and what’s important to us, etc. Me personally, excitedly opening the carton to get my first hands on experience of the PMG, first impression is everything, and I would be ‘bitterly disappointed’ on seeing an irredicable lower panel.
It’s £9k where I live with no trade in.
I would be thinking what other cost-cutting measures am I not seeing, so I wouldn’t keep it. But that’s me - my prerogative!
I get it, folks are eager to own one so they give reasons to justify and rationalise the fact that the PMG is substandard, as in, an unpainted / unfinished lower panel. To each their own. Its just not for me. But I hope the PMG range is a success.

I expect a full report on how much better the unit sounds freshly polished. Get a mirrored shelf also and I think the feet could use and upgrade imo.
Just catching up on this thread. No idea how this got so much heated discussion. If it was done for sonic reasons and you cannot see it, who cares. That’s my opinion. Get some car wrap and put it on if it bothers you. They should remove that picture that is not showing the real bottom of the device though.

After all this brouhaha…hubub…I would only buy one the way I buy anything. I hear it, I like it, I think it will improve my system sound. I wouldn’t give a hoot about the bottom plate.
Keep in mind the bottom plate has been specifically treated to conduct electricity as the ground plane. The treatment, similar to galvanizing, is what looks bad, but the treatment is actually itself a necessary functional component. While the plate looks grubby, what you are seeing is the treatment.
Bottom line, I suggest not polishing it or doing anything to the treatment. You wanted fully in place and doing its job.
If the piece has the ugliest bottom but sounds better than my current piece, I will get it for sure. I normally do not place the component upside down even with the best-looking bottom among all.
If Gryphon D333 has the ugliest bottom (not that it has, I checked and it has a beautiful bottom), I will still own it.
I love beautiful bottoms too–I bet there isn’t a man among us who doesn’t!

This was my attempt at humor on a subject that I feel is completely absurd. I don’t care about the bottom plate of any of my gear nor have I ever flipped anything upside down to look at it. I agree with others who stated if it sounds good that’s all that matters. I guess I if I had nothing good to post don’t post anything at all. My bad.
