The Grimm MU2

Yesterday, I popped the lid off the MU2 in order to solve a display issue.

As long as I was in there, I took a look around and snapped some pictures. That’s when I noticed.

Printed on one of the boards:

“Stop looking at the box. Start listening to the music.”

After I was done laughing, I put the box back together and played some music.

It seems to me that everyone who owns a MU2 has a Muon Pro (system) already. I’m about to join the group finally (next Tuesday). Too bad I don’t have the streaming cable yet. So, I will pair it with Shunyata Omega to see how do they work together. I’ll compare it to Stack SmoothLAN and I expect to hear a difference.

Has anyone been able to play a DSD512 file on the MU2?

I downloaded an Octave Record file in 512 and it will play for about 1 minute and sputters out. The MU2 display is showing it is playing back at DSD256; Roon Signal Path says the Source is DSD512 but is doing a Sample rate conversion (22.579MHz to 11.290MHz) Sigma-Delta modulator DSD256 then mu2.
After about a minute or so I get a pop-up message saying “An Audio File Is Loading Slowly” and skips to the next track. The next track starts playing but quits in the same fashion.
I went into the Roon settings Device setup - Max sample rate (DSD) and it only shows 64, 128 or 256 - no 512 option.
Roon says they support DSD512. What am I missing?

I have played 256 quite a bit but don’t have any music at 512

Yeah, 256 plays fine but not 512…

MU2 does not support DSD512, 256 is the max it will play I believe.

Apparently, I wonder if Grimm will support 512 in a future update?

Hmmm, that will require more than a software update I’m afraid.

Then Grimm needs to update their documentation - they state “all sample rates and formats supported”.

Baby steps. Slow and steady wins the race.

Hello everyone! Here comes my long-awaited MU2, now I need to set it up and transfer the media library to the internal drive, then I’ll write about my impressions and comparison with my Matrix Element X2 Pure. Please tell me: the kit comes with a coupon for a two-month trial period in Roon. Can I give it to a friend who doesn’t use Grimm? I have a perpetual subscription myself.

I think you actually could. No harm, no foul. It’s on Roon and they might gain another happy user.

Gentlemens, please tell me, did I understand correctly, in order to load music onto the internal hard drive, you need to connect the computer to the USB input, and then perform the standard loading operation through the computer. Does Grimm have to be active, or will the computer see it as a disk, even if it is in standby mode?

@aangen is the person to explain this better than I. But if you find the MU2 network address you can type that into your computer and you should be open your PC folder view and you will see the MU2 internal drive on the folder list. You can add music to that folder over the network. I hope that makes sense.

I downloaded all my files through Wi-Fi, you do not have to use USB wire. Grimm needs to be active to do this since everything went through Roon core inside including locating the MU2 SSD. It took over four days to download 4TB, so it may take less time with USB line.

Al was a big help on mine, so another big thanks to Al :wine_glass:

thank you!
Tomorrow i will try. Yes, on the site they write that it is better to use a cable. I only have 2 TB but i don’t want to wait two days

My only advice is follow the directions in the manual carefully. The Grimm MU2 has to appear on your network. Then you can direct downloads directly to the music folder on it.

I just installed the new Muon Pro filter into my streaming chain. It replaced the Stack SmoothLAN, so my new streaming chain is:

Orbi Sat.>Xangsane 5N silver ethernet>LHY SW-6>Optospan FO>SW-10>Omega ethernet>Muon Pro>Grimm MU2

The system has been playing for one hour, and my initial impression was very positive. However, I heard a bit of roughness and more grey background. This is hardly a surprise since every piece of gear in my streaming chain went through the same phase.

I held my previous setup, a Shunyata Omega plus Stack SmoothLan, at very high mark. But I have a feeling in a day, or two Muon will exceed their level. The thing excited me the most is that Shunyata Omega would work with Muon Pro just fine. I do not hear any murkiness from potential conflicts between the two passive filters, yet.
