So true
Yes, your concerns are unfounded, and you should be tempted by the MU2.
The MU2 uses Roon, and everyone, including me, seems to love the MU2.
I have now started using the preamp function of the MU2. It does sound VERY nice. You should NOT have concerns over sound quality of the MU2 & Roon.
The Grimm MU2 makes 0 sense for you. Pardon the pun.
There is no single right solution for everyone.
Yes. There. Is.
And I get to decide.
It better have tubes!!!
I’m with you.
Thanks to all for the suggestions – and the humor!
My wallet is currently in long-term, double secret time-out given my audio purchases over the past few months, so I’ve decided to continue to admire the MU2 from afar – at least for now. Every upgrade to my audio system gets me thinking about possible further upgrades that might take my system to an even higher level. But as Donald reminds us, “there will always be something better in the future.” As soon as I find the keys to the DeLorean, I’ll look into this issue more closely.
I used the dBpoweramp Music Converter Software and a USB CD drive from Apple to rip all of my music “files” to my iMac and a NAS. It took a fair amount of time to work through the pile of CDs one at a time but I found it to be no big deal. Here’s how:
Whenever I sat at my desktop to work or piddle on the computer, I made sure I had a stack of 10 discs ready to be ripped and I worked through that stack during my computer time. There were no issues multi-tasking in this manner and over time I got through my library. The experience was relatively painless for me with this approach.
Now that the chore is done. I add all new CD and hybrid SACD purchases (and the occasional download) to the library fairly soon after they arrive in the mailbox (literally or digitally) so I don’t end up staring at a pile of discs ever again.
dBpoweramp lets you point the files you are ripping to any destination on your home network.
For what its worth…
AIFF. @aangen and I agree on this. That is all you need to know.
Thanks, that was very helpful.
You bet…
For what it’s worth, before I purchased the MU2, my server/streamer was an Innuos ZENith M3 feeding the Airlens over the network, then I2S to the Mk2. While I too, found the Sense App to sound a bit better than Roon, in my use case, Roon just made more sense for me (I’ve had the $499 lifetime subscription for years and my playlists were all in Roon, though I realize that they can be transferred to other platforms).
Via the MU2, to me, everything sounded better to a significant degree. YMMV of course…
I think I paid over $800 for mine, and I waited at least two increases before pulling the trigger; look what MU2 did to me🤦♂️
For any MU2 owners looking to find a companion SACD / CD transport that performs magnificently for the price, I’m happy to share that the new ONIX XST20 that has been getting a lot of acclaim online is a great match both audibly and visually. It allows for DSD playback into the MU2 (or any DAC of your choice) when connected by i2S, AES, and Coax.
I’m currently evaluating the ONIX to decide whether I will bring the brand on (pretty much decided on “yes”, but have not notified the distributor yet). So far, over the last five days of receiving a demo/review unit (well broken in), I have not had any negative experiences. It plays seamlessly, reacts quickly, and sounds excellent. It has a small form factor and is exceptionally heavy, built like a tank for its tiny size.
Humble brag for also being a BACCH dealer, with the adio to the left of the photo. I say this because as I have been listening, I am currently not hooked up to the BACCH, in case it raises anyone’s suspicions. That said, I have also successfully hooked it up to the BACCH where the unit can deliver DoP!
According to the manual for the MU2, it can receive 3 types of digital inputs (AES3/rca/toslink) that can receive PCM rates up to 192khz and DoP (dsd64) over pcm. The MU2 does not do I2s.
Does that transport output DoP?
It seems to imply that it can use other types of outputs (other than HDMI) to play SACD through MU2. That will be a breakthrough for sure!
Hey Paul! Yeah, if using AES or Coax, it delivers DSD64 over DoP, so output works wonderfully into the MU2!

I’m interested in your opinion. I use OPPO 205 with an optional linear power supply to listen to CDs. I listen to CDs quite rarely, mostly streaming. Will there be an increase in sound quality when replacing OPPO with Onyx, or is the game not worth the candle at all? To be honest, I’m a little nervous that the Oppo is large in size. Onyx looks much more harmonious with MU2
I owned a Oppo 205 and used it as a transport to feed DS Mk1 a few years ago. When I moved on to a PST the improvement was huge. I don’t believe Oppo can compete with any new $2k cd player on the market now.
