Any modern way to play DVD Audio?
I agree. Moving to a DMP and then a PWT SACD transport was a big step up.
I used to use a Chinese made converter to play SACD, but I do not remember if DVD audio worked. That was four years ago, too long for an old guyš
my 205 plays SACD natively
DVD Audio discs didnāt last long, but have a few dozen
it seems i was too hasty to tell my wife that the system is now stable and iām not going to change anything anymore after she started making fun of me that now everything will go in circles again. Now Oppo is being sent for replacement. I will say- āItās your own fault ā you jinxed it.ā
@Desmodrom Unfortunately I donāt have any direct comparison with the Oppo 205, especially one modified with good LPS, but I can share some experiences as my brother has the 205 with the ModWright analog stage and tube rectified power supply, and it is decent. But as a transport only, I would agree that there are many better modern transports today.
While @lonson and @dchang05 mention the improvements stepping up to the DMP and PWT, itās unclear whether their 205 units had any sort of LPS employed. That said, the DMP used the same exact transport as the 205 (which is why it, too was discontinued).
A number of years ago, before I was a dealer, I was looking for a DAC to replace my modified DSD MkI. I demoed a number of units, only to find out that the bigger area for improvement was to upgrade my streaming chain. I went all out on a $25K Aurender N30SA, audiophile switches, etc. I at the same time owned the DMP. Once I got the new streaming chain, the DMP via i2S basically became useless to me aside from playing SACDs. Once I ripped my SACDs to the Aurender, the DMP became completely useless, so I sold it. And right before I became a dealer by trade, I sold my modified DSD Mk 1 to @lonson.
In my current system, the ONIX XST20 deserves a spot, and the performance comparison against my Aurender N30SA, router, switch, and nice cabling comes down to the source materialās quality. I have found some redbooks that outperform the higher res Qobuz streaming counterparts. Airās Talkie Walkie is one. Norah Jonesā Feels Like Home is another. I have had limited time comparing sources, but I have played enough material to know the XST20 is special, especially for the price. To have a $2,399 transport beat out a $40K+ streaming chain on some sources is worthy of attention. Iām excited to be a dealer for the unit and have since gone shopping for used CD and SACDs to rebuild my collection.
I should add that I am using the following chain for reference digital listening:
Estelon XB Diamond Mk II currently set up (though Vivid Giya G1 Spirits are still the main reference)
BACCH-SP adio for processing (though system still sounds top notch without it)
T+A HV Series stack (SDV 3100 HV, A 3000 HV, PS 3000 HV)
Grimm MU2 (as an alternate to the SDV 3100 HV)
Power: batteries by Stromtank and and addl conditioning by SR PC14
Cabling: All Synergistic Research SRX and SRX XL
There are other accessories in play. One other thing to note. As I make the comparisons between source materials (streaming vs XST20), the BACCH-SP is not in the chain.
My 205 did not have an LPS but itās sound was quite inferior to the DMP/DSK MK 1 that I had that I only used it for video purposes. And it died. . . too early imo.
I still use your DSD MK 1 with the analog board, Farad Super3 in my headphone only bedroom system.
You have a great system, i can safely call it a reference and trust the audio expertise made on its basis, thank you for informationš
@lonson Glad to hear that unit is still alive! I put a lot of work into the mods.
Are you using the Mk2 in your main system now, or something else? I havenāt been that active on these forums in a while so I havenāt paid attention, trying to get back into it.
Also, to bring the thread back full circle to the MU2, when I mentioned I purchased the Aurender N30SA a number of years ago, it was with the head of sales at Aurender, who is now the head of sales at Grimm. I had an excellent relationship with him until he departed, and earlier this year he personally asked me to come on board as a Grimm dealer. I still have an excellent relationship with Aurender as well, and given the voicing differences between the two brands, I am honored to be able to carry both.
Yes, DSD Mk II in my main system, Mk I in my headphone system, and the under-reated NAD M51 in my audio/visual system.
QQ - Does the Grimm MU2 Share any remote codes .. You know like every time i turn my LG tv the DSD DAC fires up or everytime i turn on my Gryphon my Marantz HT amp does the opposite ?
The MU2 is controlled by a roon app for phone or ipad.
I have not had interference with other products.
You can easily program ANY remote to work with the MU1/MU2. They make it really easy. Even I can do it. Pick an unusual remote and program it to work with it.
But using the web interface via a tablet is best best best. I never use a remote anymore.
must be easy thanks
As I am Maturing these are the things that are becoming more important ā¦
Lined up a listen Thursday week ..
I programmed a $60 Apple remote for volume. I use the phone app to select the input. Easy peasy, and doesnāt interfere with my LG TVā¦
thanks - i know in the whole scheme of world events the whole cross remote code thing isnāt important but gee its annoying ..
The manual explains how easy it is to solve a cross remote code issue.
Itās easy, it aināt fun. easy will have to do.
Late last night a 2tb Grimm MU2 showed up on TMRās website for $12,999 this morning at 8am CST it was gone.
