Torreys Final Posted

Just updated to Torreys Final. The upgrade went smoothly and the DAC has been playing through Bridge II for about 3 uninterrupted hours without incident.

SQ clearly is improved. Thank you.

Same here. Using the bridge with MConnect as controller on iPad. Sounds great, but for me it won’t be complete until we have Roon Ready, ready!

I always appreciate the work Ted and the rest of the staff do to improve the DS DAC. However, on my system, Yale is still my preferred choice.

My speakers are control room monitors with concentric drivers. The thing they do best is pinpoint a vocalist or instrument soloist precisely in the image. With Torreys, the image became more diffuse, or less precise. There was a “shadow” of the vocalist or soloist audible coming from the speakers, where Yale has vocalists and soloists “tight” in the image and the speakers transparent. Not a big deal. Choices are good.

It took me 10 back and forth evaluations (5 of each) to form an opinion about Torreys, as I only have 1 DS. Time lost loading the firmware makes it tough. I’m always surprised by members who load the firmware and Boom! best they’ve ever heard. My speakers do not present a realistic soundstage like boxless speakers, however. Perhaps that’s where the largest difference in this update is?

n2djazz said I find the Torreys Beta rev 0135 to be a noticeable improvement over Yale. It has more clarity, better resolution, broader/deeper soundstaging, and more sparkle than Yale. Torreys Beta reveals textures I didn't hear with Yale. With Torreys Beta, I can hear a soloist leaning into, turning away, or pulling back from, the microphone. I can even hear whether they turned to the left or to the right. But I find in my system, Torreys Final doesn't bring that same resolution forward. So I reloaded the Beta version and am happy with that beta sound. I plan to read of others' experiences re Torreys Beta vs Final.
This is similar to my findings. I find that torrys final/C seems to have sucked some of the ambience, and sound-stage width out of my recordings compared to both Yale and 1.21, whereas Beta A had more than either Yale or 1.21.

Where I find the biggest improvement with Beta C over Beta A and Yale is in the PRaT. PRaT is almost as good as 1.21, but it seems to have sacrificed some resolution to get there. I actually find myself wishing for a sound somewhere half-way in between Beta A (Which was really truly spectacular, but overly bright and thin sounding), and Beta C which has a good spectral balance, but which seems to have sacrificed the soundstage and ambience (some of its very best qualities), to get there.

I’m continuing to listen to Torrys final for the moment, but I’m not at all certain yet that I’m going to be inclined to stick with it. I’m finding that I’m missing my wide/huge soundstage from 1.21.

Thanks guys. I moved the topic [PS Audio Loudspeaker?] to its own forum. Would you mind greatly heading there:

And we can pick up the discussion?

Well, well – all of this pretty well sits with my findings. I have the full set of 5 Torreys loaded on separate SD cards, if you count the Functional beta test… Torreys A. was/is incredible and it’s my favourite Torreys. Final by comparison has lost all of TA’s spectacular resolution and its incredible sense of the occasion. The musicians climbed out of the speaker cabinets with A… With Final somebody through a fire blanket over them - it is just all so matter of fact compared to effortless wonderment of A. At the moment in one DS I have Torreys A. and in my other DS I have 1.2.1… ‘I could only make them breed’ ! smiley-music005_gif

Dirk.

Since this just happened for the second time, thought I would post it as it may be a bug in the final Torreys (0136). Last Thursday and again this morning (Sunday), music was playing and then suddenly no sound. I’m using Roon and an Auralic Aries, connected by wireless to my network and to the DS via USB cable. Roon shows that the music is still streaming but no sound. A hard reboot of the Directstream (which had been on for about 15 hours from Sat. night to Sun morning; but not continuously playing) and we have music again. I did not experience this with the first or second public releases of the beta, but I did not have a chance to try them out for too many hours and so the bug, if it’s a bug, may not have had enough time to reveal itself.

Anyone else experience this with the final version of Torreys?

Same here. Tb has this spectacular aura. Really surprising how this tiny lowering of the noisefloor compared with Tc kicks in (with the slight expense of linearity). In particular it is this sparkle on a black background that is intriquing. The sound emerges out of nowhere with an immediacy to it. No sound = dead silence. It could very well be that some of this is system dependent and tied to preferences also.

Frode: Are you referrening with Tb = Torreys Beta B or Beta A ?

I am now completely lost with Torreys Beta version naming. But I hope I am not mixing up things but isn’t the only difference between Torreys Beta C/Final and Torreys Beta B the PIC processor binary ? Lowering the noise floor etc. was done between Torreys Beta A and Torreys Beta B ? Please correct if I have misunderstood the differences between Betas. I have not voiced Torreys Beta A but between B and C I like B more.

Yes, in addition to myself, two other Torreys Final users reported a similar problem in this thread (see posts #67 and 72, above). In addition, new threads have been opened by others reporting a similar problem. See:

http://www.psaudio.com/forum/directstream-all-about-it/torres-final/

http://www.psaudio.com/forum/directstream-all-about-it/roon-with-dsd/

One user reported that Torreys B does not have the problem, which seems consistent with your experience. I am testing out Torreys B and so far no crashes.

Ted and Dennis are aware of the issue. See:

http://www.psaudio.com/forum/directstream-all-about-it/torreys-final-posted/page-4/#p56231

Hopefully, a fix is on the horizon.

Torreys Beta b.

Also, I think v. 0.135 was the Torreys c. Torreys Final eventually got v. 0.136 to make it load from the SD card for those who had Torreys c preinstalled in their DS.

If it were only possible to cross-breed 1.21 with Torry's Beta A, there would be nothing in the world which could touch this DAC at any price! I may have to run Beta A when I want to listen to classical, and 1.21 when I want to listen to Jazz and Rock. Although unfortunately this means rebooting every couple of hours with Torrys Beta A since that build is pretty buggy.

Perhaps a bug-fixed version of Beta A (which doesn’t lockup on DoP) could be released? I really think that the “final” sounds just a smidgen too much like functional Beta B (this is not a good thing), and that this beta test period really should not have been ended so abruptly.

IMO the true gems as I write this remain Torrys Beta A, and 1.21. Unfortunately these are probably the two least desirable builds possible from a technical support perspective for PS Audio since one does not support the card, and the other is still pretty buggy.

I never got to download beta A…Anyone care to post it for us who would like to try beta A?

Hi, I listen to mostly jazz and rock, so I am thinking I should give v1.21 another listen. In what way(s) does v1.21 “not support the card”? Thanks.

For myself when I say Torrys Beta A, I mean the ORIGINAL Torrys beta. When I say functional Beta B, I mean the FUNCTIONAL Beta released to only a handful of us which was just to test some bug fixes, but which sounded absolutely horrible. Most of you never heard that build. When I say Beta C, I mean the final Beta 0135 which became "final" 0136, but which I'm really hoping that Paul will change his mind about this truly being the "final" version of Torrys.

Wow, this is getting confusing. Here is what I have assumed is the “Torreys B” beta, and it is what I am running currently:

It sounds great in my system.

+1. Sound quality aside, Torreys Beta C/Final is unstable according to at least six Forum members.

That’s the Torreys beta B which I am also referring. Now it’s clear.

TarnishedEars: Have you compared Torreys beta A and beta B (mentioned above) ?

What you are calling Beta B I am calling Beta C because it was the third Beta released (though it was the second public beta released). But that aside, yes I have, and I can’t hear any difference between this build and so-called “final”. But I hear a significant difference between beta A and final.

Frankly, I wish that the naming conventions had not changed from numbers to mountains. The old numbering-scheme made it so much easier to tell which version was which…

TarnishedEars: Have you compared Torreys beta A and beta B (mentioned above) ?

Yes. This is the one. It is designated TorreysB.

Every time I think if one could only combine this with that I realize that it is not that simple. If one admit that everything matters you are on to a new journey when small changes are made so you can never be sure how the final result sounds without recurrent voicing. You will probably observe that some of your cherished qualities are lost along this road.

There’s plenty of confusion, but Torreys Final is the most stable for the most people. There are some unresolved Bridge issues and I don’t know if they’ll require an update of more than the Bridge code. There’s also what appears to be a USB issue where the sound goes away after some time, but we don’t have it completely characterized yet.

The lettered version were the versions that had listening tests to pick the exact software. Torreys A was the first (pretty buggy) release. Then there were two (and a half) functional releases that didn’t have sound quality checks, then Torreys B, and then Torreys C.

There are numbers on the version screen for each major piece of software so people don’t need to be inventing (and confusing) various beta names. (See below)

As far as each component is concerned they all got monotonically better over the beta’s to Final.

FPGA 0.105 had the DSD channels swapped and

FPGA versions earlier than 0.112 had issues which would cause the sound to go away for some people (not related to the very similar issues in Torreys Final.)

FPGA versions in non-audio graded releases don’t match the ones in the sound quality checked versions.

Each release had incrementing firmware version numbers from 1.8.5 to 1.8.8 in Torreys final.

The version number 135 stayed the same in the betas and then incremented to 186 for Torreys final.

Here’s the list of releases (not everybody got every release.)

Torreys A: version 135 / firmware version 1.8.3 / FPGA 0.105(18) / USB 193

Internal: …

Functional 1: version 135 / firmware version 1.8.5 / FPGA 0.110(01) / USB 195

Functional 1a: version 135 / firmware version 1.8.5 / FPGA 0.111(01) / USB 195

Functional 2: version 135 / firmware version 1.8.6 / FPGA 0.112(01) / USB 195

Torreys B: version 135 / firmware 1.8.7 / FPGA 0.112(11) / USB 195

Torreys C: version 135 / firmware 1.8.8 / FPGA 0.112(11) / USB 195

Torreys Final version 136 / firmware 1.8.8 / FPGA 0.112(11) / USB 195

Torreys Final w/USB fix version 137 / firmware 1.8.8 / FPGA 0.112(11) / USB 33

In general not using Torreys Final will cause you problems, but as long as you realize that you may encounter some bugs and you don’t ask us to fix them you can use previous versions.
