This has been pointed out several times before. I don’t recall PS Audio ever coming back with an answer on that one.
Yes you are right about the issues with the DMP the saving grace has always been the sound. As much as it would be nice if it behaved all the time I have to live with it as I do not have the funds nor would I spend another $20,000 to get something that sounds as good. We have definitely taken a hit on it!
Hang in there. Hopefully they’ll give you a 100% trade-in credit on their next world’s best disc spinner. Assuming you’re OK with not spinning SACD.
I am not willing to give up SACD. The next player is going to extract the data from the disk like the PWT did we shall see how it works out. My PWT was very reliable unlike many others.
Really? I thought the next player is going to read the optical disc on the fly and put the data through an upgraded version of the digital lens. In a similar way to DMP. Rather than read multiple times until it gets a repeatable read.
The course they are plotting does seem to be at variance to many other manufacturers. I’ve got a hunch there are more up-market CD/SACD spinners coming out recently than CD only spinners.
I had mentioned I wish the DMP would extract the data rather than read it on the fly in one of my posts and Paul commented that the new spinner would do just that.
Doesn’t that method have difficulties with error correction? Which is why the PWT stalls sometimes when the DMP might not?
My PWT using the IDE drive never stalled on me. You are correct about error correction as it does not use conventional error correction and instead re reads until it gets the data right. I believe the stalling issue is caused by the SATA interface.
$10,000 might get you something that sounds as good. Entry level Esoteric P-05X. But yeah, that is still more than double what they flogged off the last of the DMP at. Some people might understandably be happy to save the cash and suffer something that doesn’t work properly if it sounds about as good.
I have seen images of the Esoteric transports. i am not impressed by the look of the electronics inside.
oohhhhh boy. You’re funny! I’ve been giggling all morning from this forum
They look like typical oriental electronics magnitudes of components all over the place. Yes they do use a well build physical transport. I will give them that. They are overpriced.
That’s right. Just a few black bits, blue bits, green bits and brown bits. Not very impressive look at all.
Take a look at the Esoteric units in the Music Direct Catalog they look nothing like this.
Now here is something for the disciples to salivate over…more blue bits, black bits, green bits, and brown bits. Even a few red bits! Now that is impressive!
Still looks better than the Overpriced Esoteric one in the Music Direct catalog. I have never been crazy about the idea to hot rodding the Oppo. The one thing you have to give them is it does sound exceptional.
You are putting up pictures of an item that is almost 5 times the cost of the DMP.
But my Esoteric does sound better, and it works properly. True, it costs almost 10 times more than DMP, but, whatever you buy should work properly whatever the cost.
Which is this one…
Admittedly, I’m struggling with your thought concepts on this one. You are paying a premium for the optical drive in the Esoteric. In the DMP you are paying for plastic. Plastic is typically cheaper than metal.
Guys, you have beat this to death in a thread about preamps.
Please take it to PM.
I said before the physical drive is superior. I am not impressed with the layout on an item that sells for $10,000. Their PC cards look like typical mass production boards. I would never spend $10,000 this one and for sure no way $60,000 for the other.
