All we need is consistency.
Unfortunately some refer to DSD Jr. as DSD, creating confusion. We also have a number of posts which refer to Windom only, leaving one to guess which DAC.

Thinking the TSS should hereinafter be referred to as, “The-DAC-that-must-not-be-named”, as it’s Dark Powers of Digital-to-Analog-Conversion will strike fear into the hearts of DAC Wizards the World Over.
That’s “TDTMNBN”. … Damn, I just named it! Doh!
I’m using the DSJ myself though I have been considering getting a Sr. I’m debating as I think once Ted’s Obsidian is released we may see a new DSD with perhaps a more powerful FPGA. Nothing to go with really just a wish.
I’m sure it would be far easier for Ted to code for just one FPGA than two.
Who knows it could be a main board upgrade for the DSSr. I’m sure this is a ways off if it even happens.
I personally think this “we need to know what model is talked about” is more a personal problem than a forum problem. I haven’t been confused nor seen a lot of confusion.
Luckily in the history of my family’s naming it matters not whether you “prefer” persons to be named after a parent or not. My father was “William H. Armstrong, Jr.” until his father passed away and then he was just “William H. Armstrong” or more often “Rev. Armstrong.” My brother was born after my grandfather passed so he was never “the Third.” Dad to us of course is “Dad.” My brother is “Bill,” very rarely called “Junior” formally or informally. I have never seen an instance in the entire family history when anyone confused the two of them even when each is just referred to as “Bill Armstrong.”(What I find interesting is that when my mother would call out “Bill” and we were all there we all intrinsically knew which Bill she meant).
I’m now going to bow out of this silly conversation except to say that today Windom is sounding good in my DSD but still a bit bright. Wish it weren’t quite as bright.
Fair enough, though with regard to terming this conversation “silly”, I feel compelled to say…“I resemble that remark!”.
I would take exception to it being a personal problem if you read people’s observations here and do not know if they apply to your situation or not. That is assuming you ever try to asess your DAC’s sound with the current FW with respect to others’ observations, or take any action based on what others post, as I just did by formatting my SD card MSDOS FAT. (thanks again, PS-Audio-Direct-Stream-DAC-Community!! )
Perhaps if people posted their FPGA version numbers
I think, for the sake of clarity, we should ban all acronyms… nor is it the “Senior”, it’s the Perfectwave Directstream Digital to Analog Converter -let it flow!
Better go with Paul Stan Audio too then
All this uncertainty and FUD upgrading DACs…sheesh.
My £0.02 with (or ten dollars given us Brits are about to go into Brexit…)
Installed Windom a couple of days ago, not many hours on the dac since then, but been spending some time this Friday.
Never thought about a “bad” install of firmware, but beginning to doubt now my Snowmass install was done properly…seriously…as given some time on the dac post Firmware upgrade, its breathtaking what Windom does compared to what I heard before.
Normally put any differences down to a different flavour, but what I’m hearing (after some listening time after installing new firmware…(DC on the transformers and all that) is game changing.
Ted’s told us all this stuff already… sounds not as expected…go back to a couple of earlier versions for the avoidance of doubt, then upgrade to Windom.
I went from a fresh flash to Windom from Snowmass (a bit bright?) back to Yale.
Then From Yale to Windom.
Verified every software change, double rebooted each time.
This stuffs crazy, don’t want to spend mental cycles on it, so went all in.
Conclusions: Two things are fact imo and drawn from experience:
Firmware flash’s can be problematic, Teds a software guy…he’s told us what to do.
Go back to Yale or earlier, then flash Windom. BOOM!
Software burn in is real.
Its not ACTUALLY software, it’s FPGA and transformer related, but “Trust the fungus” (Mario reference) and assume Ted knows what he is talking about.
Fuzzy logic applies in this case.
Things are really slow when we resort to discussing nomenclature . . .
Yes, we need to know if the crack suicide squad came from the Judean People’s Front, or the People’s Front of Judaea…
Is it the chicken, or the egg?
Junior … Senior… mountain tops… all these names are awful. Trendy Silicon Valley crap. Version 1.3, Model A, Model B. It was this way, it is swinging back. Why? Because these trendy, “I can be cool, too” names just suck.
My cousin in Texas is a fireman. He named his twin boys HoseA and HoseB. (writing a joke for sound doesn’t work well eh?)
Peace

I have given this thought as well as I do not like PS Audio’s names. On the other hand, numbers and letters can be confusing.
The car industry is illustrative. Some, such as BMW use only numbers and letters; others, like Toyota, names. Which is better?
Neither is better than the other, just different, like people
It seems everything with a catching name also have numbers to back it up
One thing that cracked me up in retrospect about a lot of car model designations “back in the day” was using variants of the letters in the english word “sex”.
Whatever you call it the majority of load problems are related to issues with the Jr (PSA’s name not mine). It would be nice to have a thread related to Sonic impressions of Windom alone (Jr. Sr. Johnson - whatever) as this is starting to read like a Politico thread - “I made $75k in two weeks from home while watching tv”. Elk as this is becoming a bit of a mess - (we’re discussing the names Jr. vs Senior - please) any interest in separating “troubleshooting” from “sound impressions”? Maybe? Perhaps? Think about it I guess…
I just can’t understand those claiming that Windom is “bright” or less warm than Snowmass. In my own experience it is the exact opposite. I can say though, that I did have one bad update, and it sounded harsh. After another try, some power cycling and burn in, it sounds great. Nothing here is remotely bright or harsh on any source I’ve tried. Probably one of the biggest benefits is that it removes edginess, fatigue and brightness and gives the bass a little more body.
Agree and I’m very sensitive to brightness.
