Another fine performance and excellent recording from Presto’s recent Linn sale. I wasn’t familiar with the work, but I like it a lot. Parts of it remind me of Mendelssohn, especially his Midsummer Night’s incidental music.
Lots of passion and dynamics, an interesting program, and the SACD sounds very good. Her playing reminds me a bit of Lazar Berman whom I saw many years ago.
“…sound like photographs of tympani and basses.”
Sorry, i just can’t picture that.
Flat and 2-dimensional. More like the representation of instruments than the instruments themselves.
Saw her early in her career. Nice to see she’s still going strong.

All performances are first class, the recording excellent & the music of Mendelssohn captures the magic of this, the most magical of plays.
This and his 4th symphony are what really made me into a Mendelssohn fan.
The third classical record I bought, back when I was in high school. The performances can’t really be faulted, in my book, especially the “secondary” tracks, and the sound, despite not being British EMI, is surprisingly good. One of my best friends had an older brother who left the LP behind when he went off to Northwestern, and we played it to death. I had to get a copy for my own.
I have not listened to this in a while. To my ears, it’s a good recording and an immaculate performance.
A great box set which you many find of interest.
I have three versions of the 3rd and 4th bundled together, and two full sets of the five symphonies (Weller with the Philharmonia and Dohnanyi with the Vienna), so I don’t really need another. But hey, I’ll give it a try on Qobuz if they have it!
What a piano sound of this Linn recording. Linn is good, though not superb too often imo, but here it is.
I love good piano recordings. I’ll have to look for this one. Berkshire Record Outlet just had a dirt-cheap sale on Linn a few weeks ago, but I doubt it’s still on.
Thank you for pointing that out. A search shows that Pizarro performed the full cycle at St John’s Smith Square in 2003 and it was recorded by BBC R3, no longer available online. Shortly thereafter he did two discs of bestsellers and the cycle fizzled out.
They were done in the days (almost 20 years ago) when Linn were pioneering DSD big-time and this was released on SACD and CD and something called HDCD I’ve never heard of.
Time to make a £15 contribution to the recording industry.
Bought the SACD set when first released. Available only on CD & worth seeking out, especially for the 5th.
