What Classical are you spinning?

I’ve really been enjoying this SACD of Mahler 2. It’s said to be the first recording of the “corrected” score. The liner notes indicate there had been many errors discovered in previously used editions - wrong notes, notes assigned to wrong instruments, missing notes, etc. I’m not a Mahler enthusiast, so I can’t speak to the validity, or the effect of these changes, but I’m finding it a treat to listen to. I particularly like the extended first movement, with its recurring low-register funeral march themes.

I found a near mint copy of this “shaded dog” at a local shop. The sound is very clear, but being a child of the stereo era (at only 65!), I’m finding the monaural reproduction is taking a little getting used to.

Sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt. A few wrong notes never did any harm. Abbado, Bernstein, Tennstedt and Jurowski are good choices for one of the most popular symphonies. The first movement (one of three funeral marches) was written as a standalone piece and even when incorporated into the symphony was meant to be played apart. Whereas 1 is grounded in the earth, 2 takes a heavenly course and the final movement is almost too much to bear.

Legendary recording, the power demands & dynamics of which, image will provide the ultimate test of your system. BHK 300’s didn’t break a sweat.

Bach - Collegium Japan - Cantatas 32 bild

Crazy stuff, great sounding.

Saw them perform Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at Yale University a couple of years back & have many of their BIS SACD’s. First rate group.

Agreed, they are superb.

I particularly enjoy Carolyn Sampson who often sings in Masaaki Suzuki’s recordings of Bach cantatas.

She is a pleasure to listen to. I have her SACD’s of the Bach b minor Mass & Mozart Great Mass in C minor, both with Suzuki, and Purcell: Victorious Love. Her recent Mahler 4th has received good reviews, but as i already have several recordings, will probable pass on this one, though I would like to hear it.

I have these as well, and also do not have the Mahler.

Yes, these Bach Cantatas SACD’s are very good.
I have just bought 9 of them (29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 39, 40 and 45) and so far I’ve listened to 6 of them and are very happy with all of them so with a bit of “unluck”* I’ll buy all of them because of how good they all seems to bee.

“unluck”* = Many discs totally = Expensive to buy them all.

I recently dug out this gem from long ago. This is the original Turnabout recording of the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances by Donald Johanos and the Dallas, that HP & Co. raved about all the time in the first several volumes of The Abso!ute Sound. Despite surfaces that aren’t dead quiet, the sound is wonderful, even if a tiny bit nasal, a problem I’ve found to be fairly common in the '50s and '60s.

Music, performances (soprano Lise Davidsen, who I’’ll hear sing Leonora in Fidelio at The Met in December, is especially fine) & recording all first class.

She’s singing it in London at the moment to rave reviews, stole the show apparently. I’ll find out in a week or so.

This, her debut album for Decca, is worth acquiring.
