I have seen where Paul has said that they take care of issues even after the warranty period ends. They build not just to last the 3 years but for a long time there after. I would not purchase an item for $6000 if I did not believe it would last me a long time.
“I am beginning to think that each individual DMP/code combination is like a piece of equipment unto itself, i.e. no two DMP/code versions will sound exactly the same.”
A valid point. You could well be right.
The DS DAC’s are the same. Some behave differently to others, even with the same software.
Is there any chance that a future update will allow data discs to be played without having to interact with the touch screen, that is, using the remote functions only?
With my touch screen unresponsive as it is, I may go back to 2.08 which had no issues playing my DVD+R discs via remote.
Uploading 3.07 went on uneventfully. After reading some of the posts I was expecting to experience some positive change in SQ but this didn’t occur. I tend to play things (CDs, data discs and SACDs) that I haven’t heard in quite a while so it is difficult to make comparisons. No question that the system as a whole sounds great, I just didn’t experience any improvement in SQ.
I remember reading a post some time ago about somebody having trouble uploading firmware with the DS DAC. There was a suggestion in this forum that the person try to reinstall the FW by cycling through the main power switch. Thinking that the lack of improvement was due to some glitch in the upload I retried cycling the power two more time and the unit went through the normal flashing lights thing before initializing.
There was no problem with 2.08 which at times sounded hands-down terrific to my ears. Maybe I am just tired lately or maybe it was the supposed upgrade I did with speaker cables or the dedicated circuit I had installed for the audio equipment the week before the FW change.
One minor oddity…when I turn the unit on (from the front switch) the screen indicates that track 1 is playing. Odd because there is no disc in the machine at that time. Other than that no problems.
I will remove the SD card as Matt seemed to suggest in this blog.
Once the FW is loaded correctly I replace the SD card with one that only has the album list as per my Playlist on the PS Audio server.
I feel that way there is no chance of an accidental overwrite of the code.
In line with what I experienced re SQ. Some versions of code that others didn’t like sounded great to me. I prefer 2.06 to 3.07 as far as SQ goes. Maybe the software needs to settle in. I’m told that’s a real thing.
OTOH, I am convinced that there will be variability in the SQ of the DMP with a given code version. In particular two Diana Krall SACDs I listened to were disappointing and yes, it was set to Stereo SACD. If it turns out I have to ultimately live with the kinks of 2.06 to get the SQ I want I will do that and then upgrade to the latest version if I sell the DMP.
This is on our list to fix. I have now successfully duplicated it and we know the cause. Thanks for the help.
I certainly do not want you to go and please forgive me if that’s how I made you feel. No, not at all. And, I appreciate open honesty and comments. I was just trying to make the point perfection is not possible - and maybe I am just being to literal with the word -
It is a bug and it happens when you’re playing track 1 and then hit the back button while playing. That brings up track 0 and the next one is 255. If you hit stop or eject the disc all is back to normal. It’s certainly frustrating and now that we know how to reproduce it consider it killed.
Did someone else try USB interface?
Considering the 255 bug was reported almost 2 years ago, and I’ve reported it also, I’m pleased to read it’s finally been replicated and a fix will be coming. True, it’s not all that a big deal of a bug, but I’m very curious how a bug from the 1.x software can find its way into the 3.x software, particularly when 3.x was supposed to be a completely new code write from somebody who had nothing to do with the first attempt.
Great question and the answer is we never saw it ourselves. We tried. It’s a flaw in the Oppo and one we’ve never been able to duplicate. By chance I ran across it and can now make it happen. Once we can replicate a bug we can fix it.
@Brodric - your “train wreck” statement doesn’t apply to me and most others either. My DMP has worked well and I am glad I purchased it. Sorry for your problems, but I also realize that some people will look at certain problems as a crisis and won’t hesitate to lash out and over emphasize what is wrong rather than focus on what is right. Also, it is my experience that negative people will always try to get others to agree with them.
So is the current state of affairs with the way 3.07 handles data discs such as DVD+R the “final solution” or will a future update restore remote control of these functions (as it worked with 2.08)?
Getting ready to update my DMP. Question, I downloaded the files to my iMac, but not sure how to unzip them, or if it’s even necessary to do so on a mac? Thanks.
Howdy Gary, You will need to unzip them. there are a few ways to do this but I think one of the easiest ways is to download it to your desktop, command click on the file, go to services, and hit unzip. You’ll know it’s unzipped because it won’t be one folder. There will be multiple files. Reach out if you have trouble.
Loaded fine but more bugs than 3.06 for me and DVD-a discs such as Neil Young play in one stream were as on 3.06 could navigate tracks even if a bit fiddly to do so. Also artwork that was solved has now gone again. In UK this player cost £6K which is over $7k a huge outlay for such a flaky device. On the plus side the sound is and has always been superb.
I also still have very slow response to many remote commands, still a long way to go but hopefully PS Audio will get there
We will!
Didn’t unzip, but everything went fine with the update, so guess my Mac automatically unzipped.
Repeat all still not working unless you toggle through the repeat options and reselect every time you insert a new disk or stop a disk.
My DMP screen is still brighter than DAC screen.
Clicks and pops when reading SACD’s.
Read time is a little bit longer than 3.06.
Hitting the back arrow when on track 1 restarts track 1, as it should. No track 257, or whatever the glitch was for others.
I believe there was an improvement in SQ. Presentation seems a little more relaxed with greater ease.
