It was billed as a universal disc player that was the last optical disc transport one would ever need. That included bluray. You did made clear that bluray functionality would never be fully achieved - and even offered a full refund those beta testers who were not ok with that. I really don’t understand why you keep distancing yourself from the fact that bluray was part of the unit’s core functions.
I did a bit of digging around the forums regarding the development/ goals for the DMP (Nee DST) and I can see where people would come to the conclusion that the DMP unit was going to play all formats including Blu-ray and data-discs ;
The pic’s are replies from Paul on these forums in Q3 2016. Coupled with the advertising at the time it is easy to conclude the DST/DMP was going to be the end-of-line unit.
I think PS Audio reached for the stars (and shouted from the rooftop its aim). Is now finally getting into orbit on most but the outer universe.
I followed the hype closely during the lead-up to the DMP release and my impression was it would play everything, which I didn’t really understand how this was possible as we knew video navigation was important for BluRay operation and the DMP had no video output. I thought there must be a workaround (my K-system can play and navigate BluRay audio without needing to be connected to a display, the control system acts as the navigation device).
Anyway, that aside. 99% of my decision to buy DMP was the native SACD support with the PS DAC’s. So all up that caused me to buy both pieces, the DMP and DSJ.
I have been hauling my hair out with various operational, differing sound issues since I installed 3.06. I have downloaded 3 sets of files to brand-new formatted SD cards, 3 different cards, but more or less the same dissatisfaction…
I had a falling out, just a silly hissy fit on my part, but the outcome being that oddeophile and I made contact and we are inseparable now and we are in the process of leaving our wives:grinning: Richard forwarded me files used during the beta trial.
This is part of Richard’s email…""I have a theory that maybe the variations in the loading issues may be due at least in part to o e variable - differing zip programs and/or bad unzips.
If these original files (same as if you bought and SD card from PS direct) make any difference at all then my theory is right at least on one level. I know as I said on my units the zipped versions would load wrong with different sonic or performance results each time I loaded them. However, the original non zipped versions always loaded properly.
Take care and crossing fingers this’ll help.
Hang in there.""
Well, I have been listening non stop to my system since installing Richard’s files and all my frustrations and angst are over… As soon as I hit the play button I really heard a “BIG” jump in sound quality. I installed them at 6PM UK time and I listened until 5 AM… My Wife and our dog slept in the garage I didn’t want to post my findings too soon in case it was another false experience … In another email Richard told me he has had similar issues the very same as me loading downloaded files to his DS box - whereas loading files direct from PSA - he has no-issues…
I realise others had no problems but I for one have had several issues… and I know how to unzip files, load them, etc… All files were unzipped at my end, but !!! I don’t what it is but something is not right going by Oddeophile’s and my experiences… I realise others will think/report there is no problems related to downloading, that everything in the garden is rosy, but that doesn’t help people like oddeophile and myself… …REALLY HAPPY NOW…
I have always had issues with DirectStream software updates…not a single DS update went smoothly. Redcloud won’t load at all. However, my one and only DMP update - which I was dreading - worked as advertised and I needn’t had worried. It eludes me how one works and the other doesn’t when everything I do at my end is identical.
I’m curious what checks and balances internal to the machines are in place with these software updates that verifies what has been loaded is what should have been loaded. I know with many of my other non-PS devices there is a checksum or other process running that verifies the update has happened exactly as intended.
Exactly. And when I report my findings I always get the impression that others who don’t experience any issues think it just down to me not doing the downloads/installation properly. But I am doing it properly. There has to be something untoward with the whole process: from PSA - through the ether - the downloading - the loading of the files … frustrates the hell out of me how some installs are a breeze while others are a nightmare ?
Paul said a while back they are looking at the engineering of the update process and how they might make it more reliable for everybody.
Because from day one we tried to make it clear it could be a challenge to navigate BluRay. Of course it is indeed a universal player and it should play all BluRay discs, but navigating them can be a challenge. I suppose I distance us because I don’t want to disappoint anyone. Character flaw.
The other side of this is that if the update is a ‘breeze’ but you don’t think the sound quality improvement is ‘night & day’ or other superlatives that others report you always think “did it install properly!” So you get on the re-load / reboot merry go round anyway. LOL. It’s a journey for sure.
Maybe you guys can help me with a bit of education. What BluRay discs do people listen to and why? No one in the office or that I know have the slightest interest in BluRay for audio purposes and I am curious what people listen to.
Concert videos, and BluRay audio.
Without doubt. Example: If you look at my post ‘on my’ - ‘don’t know about on your screen’? On PC, Tablet, Mobile phone where I joke about Richard and I the smiley face isn’t shown just the words grinning and double dots… So only half the operation worked whereas the other smiley face attached… There lies an example of failure ! It’s a precarious journey that’s for sure
Delighted that Richard helped you but I am flummoxed as to why. It would be helpful to our engineering team to understand. The only difference between the beta 3.06 and the release 3.06 is a small bit of number change in the loader file. The loader file is supposed to inform the unit’s internal boot loader what the new firmware is and make sure it’s for the right machine. In production releases we add in a value that ensures it’ll load into the right machine—we don’t want you to mistakenly load DMP code into a Power Plant. It would turn the Power Plant into a useless brick.
The beta code has a different value in the config file that forces that file to load no matter what. It makes it so users can easily go back and further between old and new code at will.
It also means users could put it into a DS or Power Plant and turn that into a useless brick. Which is why we don’t release that special beta version to the general public. It would be irresponsible.
That said, it sounds like with the standard code you were having a frustrating time getting it to load. That can be anything from user error to the machine not happy.
Of source when you’re just trying to upgrade it doesn’t matter what the root cause is. You’re just frustrated and no one blames you for that, least of all me! We all just want to have it work and for the most part it does.
It would simply be helpful to the engineering team to understand why it didn’t work for you.
I listen to Blu-ray Audio discs with jazz content predominantly – Universal Music has put them out in America and Europe and the Japanese branch has put out separate ones. There are also a few concert discs I would play of non-jazz acts, and Blu-ray Audio discs in box sets from King Crimson, releases from Yes and by Steve Wilson.
Previous to 3.06 the Japanese would not load up but the others from Universal Music would and would play, the entire disc, which is okay. With 3.06 so far none of them play, which is disappointing and not an “improvement.” The Crimson, Yes and Wilson ones did not play before and do not play now.
I have music concert Blue-rays but personally I wouldn’t want to play them on my audio system. When I play them it is through my OPPO player in my TV setup… I have another system totally independent from my music only system for when I watch and listen to music. But many others incorporate both TV/Films & Music … The mistake you made was you said it would play all ! Like I said, I have no issue because I have two systems, but people will want to listen to their Blue-rays at the apogee of perfection and they were swayed by that in mind when they bought into the DMP…
Our upgrade code and boot loaders are being rewritten over time. They can be a bit finicky as I just tried to explain in another post. They should be a lot more bulletproof and not require everything to be just so. As we work on revamping our software team problems like these will become fewer and fewer over time.
For now the best way is to let us help whenever there’s a problem. If the unit isn’t accepting code, Jeremy, TJ, or James can easily walk users through the process. If in the end the users did everything right we can give you special force load versions that always work. We don’t offer those to the public at large because used incorrectly they can cause more trouble than they fix.
Thanks. Can anyone make a few suggestions of really good ones? The ones we;ve bought off Amazon aren’t very good.
Thanks. That’s very helpful.
Certainly. I understand that. Just trying to wrap my head around what they were listening to. As we get the navigation to be as good as possible we’ll need a few BluRay discs to test.
