The same comment applies equally to the DirectStream DAC’s. Some owners have no end of difficulty with theirs, yet others have no issue at all. It is mind boggling how such variability of experience continues with these products.
I am stumped by how some people feel 2.08 was more operationally sound than 3.06. I experienced many more issues with 2.08 as far as the remote misbehaving. The load time of almost 30 seconds was terrible and when the transport would fail to provide audio while indicating that the disc was playing you would have to eject and wait another 30 seconds to see if you would get sound this time around. The cover art was way more funky. I would have discs that resided on the SD card and the DMP would go to the server anyway and than corrupt the cover art so it displayed the PS audio sine wave. 3.06 is not perfect by any means and I am experiencing the same issues with PCM playing from the DSD layer, requiring a reboot to correct. The 3 second load time is much easier to tolerate when there is a screw up. I am sure Matt and Barry are compiling all of our grievances and are work toward solutions. Would I have liked to be able to play Blu-ray discs maybe, but for me that is not a big issue. The same goes for USB playback though I believe they can correct that issue.
I would like everything on my DMP to work as advertised. That is what I paid for, believing the marketing of the product. That isn’t too much to expect. Paul said it will do that, eventually. Just needs some final polishing. Although the 90% comment muddied the waters (for me 90% isn’t good enough). v3.06 is working better for me than v1.94. I’ve been playing mine since v3.06 was published (after it had a rest for about a year), and I haven’t yet felt the inclination to throw the thing through the window. Although it is throwing the occasional interesting experience at me, all of which I expect to be fixed. And I haven’t felt the inclination to listen to Spotify instead of spinning a disc. For me it’s much closer to polished than it was before.
High praise indeed.
Well, I’m 99% deaf at the moment after going to a 5SOS concert over the weekend and having 10,000+ teenage girls screaming in my ear at 10 million decibels.
I tried rebooting again (3rd time) this afternoon and, yes indeedy, I’m getting DSD playback on my SACD hybrids.
HOORAY!!
So I’ll keep 3.06 installed and eagerly await data disc functionality.
Now there’s a double edged sword! Got a good chuckle out of that …
Exactly. The other edge of that sword was eye popping, however I would prefer not to have experienced the ear popping. And it was worse than I described, because I copped it at home as well (my 14 year old daughter had 5SOS concert tickets for 5 months but she was prohibited from going at the last hour due to behavioral issues at home…and because she was grounded, the mum’s of her girlfriends who were going with her were also told they couldn’t go. I’m not very popular here, it was a very difficult weekend).
That worked
Thanks
Escorted my 20 year old daughter to a Sleeping with Sirens (?!) concert last night, want to die and need my ears back!
Ear plugs guys. Ear plugs! Won’t leave without em. Saviors.
I’m back on Spotify now. I’ve tried breaking DMP over the past few days and it’s been standing up to the challenge better than I expected. Sure, more polish is needed, but it’s not getting packed away just yet. It can have a rest until the next update, give me time to sort out the mess of CD scattered on the listening room floor. If DMP finally delivers as promised I might just have to buy that Shunyata Sigma AES/EBU to connect it to the DAC.
““I find all sides to any issue on this site can get obnoxiously preachy. Thus the universal request to keep it toned down and respectful””.
oddeophile and I have been in touch via personal mail. Richard was very magnanimous and generous and I have apologised to him for my lack of respect. And I apologize here as well.
The amount of grief and angst instilled with a damn piece of audio equipment installing firmware. We have the names of mountain tops for the DS. With my DMP 3.06 = Damien Thorn. I need a priest to install the SD card.
To my great surprise the software update for DMP worked first go with minimal effort. Exactly the opposite experience to that which I’ve had with the DirectStream since forever.
I didn’t have any problem loading 3.06 per se, the DMP developed quirks that weren’t an issue to start with when I initially loaded the files. Within 10 minutes of installing 3.06 I reported that the DMP TOC was excellent, as was the improved sound quality. During the course of the next few days using the DMP that’s when I encountered many stumbling blocks, etc. I have already covered in detail the roll backs of firmware and reboots so I won’t go over that again. Members who experience none of the frustrations can’t/won’t understand until it happens to them. They are incredulous to it !
I had similar problems with one of my two DS dacs. Both DS boxes loaded effortlessly with each new firmware at their release and both worked in perfect harmony. During the Torreys beta - several incarnations of code was released - and one of my DS boxes started to play up. I could load the files on one DS without any effort but the other DS simply wouldn’t load - I eventually managed to load the files, which the DS had always done effortlessly several times previously, and, the DS now sounded dire, phasey sounding - almost monophonic - just a dirge: I tried everything including rolling back a few of the earlier firmware’s but all to no avail. I spoke to the digital deity and Ted was his usual very helpful self but what he suggested I try I had already tried and he couldn’t offer anymore because he couldn’t physically handle my DS. If I continued to play the sickly DS it would work through its virus and it would eventually merge with my other DS box. This took about 3 weeks of 24/7 constant playing and the DS was already fully run-in. When I loaded up the next new release of firmware it would be the very same dilemma all over again. Of course, when I mentioned this on the forum I was quickly informed, mostly good intentioned, that it was placebo, that I was only imagining it, code doesn’t run-in, etc… After speaking once more to the digital deity I decided to change all of the electronics. I fitted a brand-new update kit and from that day on the DS loads effortlessly and sounds perfect, just the same as my other DS, that I couldn’t tell them apart musically. The benefit of owning two DS boxes is that there is no dispute about the sound being right or wrong, removing placebo because, there is no down time loading different firmware…just switch between them it is so obvious – your ears would have to be painted onto the side of your head – to fail to hear how poorly the sickly DS sounded before I upgraded all the electronics… I always finish the downloads off and never remove the card reader until it comes up on the screen – Finished. Remove card. So what caused my DS to develop this virus that could/would eventually sort it self out with constant playing - although it was a pure shit to load the files. Hopefully my DMP hasn’t developed a similar virus ! Time will tell. If my DMP doesn’t function to its maximum after the final release that will be game over for me… I have a PWT lying somewhere that has never worked from day one. It arrived broken. Even after several investigations as to the cause of the PWT’s problems it is still just as problematic…
It is truly a shame that the software problems have been so persistent and stubborn with this product because in terms of sound it is an A plus but the software issues make it difficult to enjoy…as i said a real shame that shouldnt exist in high end products
Well done, gentlemen! Very gracious
In the mail an SD card arrived from the mothership (thanks for the help Joey) that allows me to now be a member of the 3.06 user club.
So far very fast loading time, and cd and SACD seem to function well and as I’d like.
Blu-ray is functioning worse though. I’ve tried two: a Pure Audio that used to play before doesn’t. Oddly a Japanese blu-ray audio of a Blue Note title that didn’t even load up before now loads up, but still won’t play. Ah well, maybe someday at least those that played before will play. If not, that’s one reason I have an Oppo UDP-205, and these discs do sound good on that machine. . . I just know they’d sound better via the DMP-DSD combo if I could get them to function.
As I’m not a file or USB user I haven’t tried any of those yet. As I’m mainly using this for cd and SACD I think I can hold steady til a further update corrects more problems.
So, no surprises there. Glad you could get v3.06 loaded.
