Firmware updates and fixes for the new Directstream MK2

Thanks Ted :+1:t2:

I don’t either. Never have.

Do you mean that users don’t care if the issue gets fixed? Right now I have no way to test USB. Furthermore, I spent most of this morning studying the user manual and release notes for 2.5.0 to understand all the new features. That, along with reading the forum posts, has made my head spin. But I know that someday I may well want to use USB, so I do want to see the issue fixed.

The DS MK2 is one of PSA’s flagship products, so I’m sure they want USB to work properly. I have no idea how much (if any) help Barry has. It’s probably best for him to stay away from the forums and fix the problem and then come back when he’s got the solution.

I use both I2S and USB, and I am not sure if I should do the update at this point when I come back from the other side of the earth on Saturday.

I never had any issue with 198, so I will probably wait until the ā€œfixā€ is fixed.

I reached out to Barry about possibly buying a USB drive with the files installed. . . and he is taking care of me. I am very grateful!

Barry, Kevin, James. . . I have had such excellent experience from these gentlemen. Service department. . . less responsive but there’s still hope. . .

Ted,
I’m dizzy too. I find the control wheel to be a PITA and that’s not directed towards anybody (especially you Ted). I have not yet loaded either of the 2.5 updates. I have a Jay’s Audio CDT playing through I2S as it did through the Mark 1. It sounds great great, green light lit, but shows 44.1/24. I know you have said that this is a bug that is being corrected although it appears that we may not yet have success in addressing based upon Jeff’s input…

My problem is I can’t find many of the sub menus that people are talking about such as polarity invert for I2S, max volume fix volume etc. I can get to Audio Inputs after the version screen but I can’t get any arrows or center button to take me ā€œI2S Polarityā€. Similarly with Outputs can’t get to Fixed Volume or max volume. I’ve read the ā€œManualā€ (and I use the term loosely :grinning:) and I think I’m missing something about the control wheel.

I know you’re not the UI guy and I don’t actually seem to have a sound problem at this point but if there is something simple I’m missing about the menus and sub menus that anyone can help me with I would appreciate it.

BTW: You’re the best,Man!

Thanks,
Mike

When you get to ā€œAudio Inputsā€ press the center button. Then there’s a sub menu of things to do to the inputs, use the left and right arrows to find them. The same with the ā€œAudio Outputsā€

The I2S configuration is in the 2.5 series of releases so you won’t find it in your menus until you upgrade to at least 2.5.

No the display of 44.1/24 isn’t a bug, it’s telling you that either your I2S polarity is wrong or that something upstream is doing math (e.g. a volume control.) on the data.

The bugs that confused everyone are that the upgrade didn’t set the I2S2 polarity correctly and that with the 2.5 the new I2S configuration is confusing. Tho you can use it to set the polarity of the bits (and hence get 44.1/16) you may have the channels still reversed.

It was helpful of Jeff to note that something was wrong with the I2S settings. The fact that the I2S settings aren’t working right is all we need to know to fix it. I was the testing release based on the bit polarity and I didn’t notice that the channels didn’t invert when they should. I had a migraine today and didn’t work on the I2S stuff today. When I get back to it finding the bug might just take an hour or it might take a day.

Well issue with USB sounds like powering it off. If that is your main source it should not be different than now.

I keep loading up new firmware on the stick but the new bug reports have stopped me from upgrading. I set out the last two. Perhaps three is a charm and I will wrestle the one hand reach around tomorrow. If there is not worse news than present perceived bugs or is that features?.

I’m on 2.5.0 and it says 44.1/24 on the display and in the Audio Input Menu (Just past the version screen) it only gives the Auto Power option and no other menus in that area so there no I2S Polarity selection or others.

Just clarifying to make sure I understand: Are you saying that with ā€œAuto Powerā€ on the screen pressing the right arrow doesn’t advance in the menus?

I will wait until next week to do the update anyway. Sunday we will be so tired from jet lag plus the system needs a couple of days to wake up.

Having installed 2.5.1 this is exactly my case, using USB input for streaming it seems all ok. I removed the shorting plug from I2S2 input (unused input). It was too late last evening so I haven’t tried switching to I2S1 input for playing CDs with PST.
If I understand the issue above mentioned, the problem playing now CDs via I2S1 is that the other USB input (where my streamer is actually connected) stays powered on. That is exactly the situation we all had with 2.3.6, isn’t it?
Does it mean that the new auto power on/off input function doesn’t work only for USB or even for I2S1 and I2S2 inputs?

I think on Sunday you’ll be busy enough reading about Axpona and Pulsar reports, deciding which bottle among your 600s you can finally taste…

You know me well! :wine_glass:

Not sure it came across, but it seemed that nobody was noticing that Ted’s comments about the polarity setting conflicted with what you were documenting. People talking past each other bothers me, so I thought it was worth asking Ted about it directly in case it was yet another bug lurking around.

all this seems hodgepodge, hit-and-miss, inconsistent, and too many settings

Hi Ted,

I hope you have a good and quick recovery.
Have a nice day!

Just in case you were asking me for a summary.

[Edit - it turns out that the 16/24 bit tests agree with the channel swapping, but it’s quite confusing with the UI bug dealing with the I2S settings. It’s probably best to not use the I2S polarity settings (except to set them all to Normal) until there’s a UI release that cleans things up.]

There was a bug that the upgrade to 2.5.0 clobbered the I2S2 data and left/right polarity setting to Inverted. That would cause a system that was working just fine to now show 44.1/24 instead of the expected 44.1/16, but it would sound fine.

The next bug is that the FPGA didn’t swap the left and right channels no matter what the UI I2S settings were.

So if you were looking at the 44.1/16 the I2S settings seemed to work just fine and your system would be no worse off than before the release, at worst you needed to check that the I2S polarity was ā€œNormalā€ if you wanted to match the previous behaviour.

If you were paying attention to whether the I2S polarity settings swapped the left and right channels, since it didn’t, it looked like I2S polarity settings weren’t doing anything.

Similarly jkrichards reported that the updated release 2.5.1 seems to have stopped powering the USB off at times when 2.5.0 would. Once again with either 2.5.0 or 2.5.1 you are no worse off than with earlier releases. And better off if you were running 2.5.0, since that supported USB auto power off.

Both 2.5.0 and 2.5.1 sound better than previous releases and they have fewer ticks and pops. Many report none at all now. But there are some who still have a few, AFAIK those aren’t worse than the DS Mk I but I’d still like to fix them. This is obviously lower priority than the earlier issues.

Thanks, Ted. I wasn’t necessarily asking you to go to the trouble of writing up a summary, but this is informative. With the improvement in USB on the Mk2, the Matrix has been relegated to a Mac Mini I sometimes use for video playback. My problem is none of my playback software will output at 16-bit, so I don’t know for sure.

I was hoping that I could rely on the bitperfect test, but like you had found, it passes regardless of the polarity setting on I2S #2. What exactly does this mean? Is the polarity setting actually doing anything, or is the test unable to indicate that polarity is not set correctly?

EDIT: Actually, I do see 44.1/16 when nothing is playing, but I’m not sure whether actually need it to be playing for that to be meaningful.

It did not last night and I tried to get it to advance several times. I turned the system off via my Plant 12 which is set to leave the Mk2 powered all the time and today I can advance to the I2S Polarity but switching from Normal or Inverted it still stays at 24. The only device I have hooked to !2S is a Jay’s Audio CDT Transport which they set the dips to PS Audio compatibility setting. I was using a DSD Jr before. Is this the way it should be? Mine is the newer CDT that has !76.4 setting and that to comes up at 24 in either Polarity setting.
