PS Audio AirLens

Hi, it seems the AirLens won’t update itself by just being on.

However, I did find the Mcontrol app allows you to update the firmware quite simply and it might be worth a try?

If you open up the Mcontrol, tap refresh so it can see the AirLens, then check the options menu.

When I did this, it advised an update was available and I was fascinated to see it identified the exact card from Conversdigital people thought it might be and showed the firmware it had and after the update, what it moved to.

Mcontrol settings (gear wheel icon) show AirLens info including firmware version and whether it’s up to date.

Slick.

The UPS man was feeling generous today.

That had to be the easiest hookup of any digital/streaming device ever. Plugged in I2S, power cord, Ethernet, flipped the switch. Done. Hop over to the computer and it’s already showing in Roon, ready to be set up.

This evening, download mconnect to the tablet, firmware’s current. :+1:

Can’t turn it up too loud right now, but it sounds…different. In a good way. I’ve only had an issue streaming DSD from the server (NAS) where one track quit, and another dropped out for several seconds. But I’ve had this with Roon Server in the past (higher res playback could stop, or sluggish response), so after restarting it, everything seems fine now. (I reenabled a scheduled task on the computer running Roon Server where I was restarting it at 4:30am every day.)

I’d like to get a better power cord and move it to its permanent place on the rack but otherwise, it’s good to go.

No volume control on the AirLens. But I noticed a switch in mconnect to enable a digital volume control for Roon. There are times I’m not near the system to adjust the volume but I can just as easily enable DSP volume control when I’m listening in that mode, and easily switch it back.

It’ll be an interesting couple of days checking this thing out!

Can anyone recommend a decent power cable for the AirLens that wont break the bank?

I’m using a Tubulus Concentus power cable ($550/1 m, shipping included) and I’m quite happy with it.

I use this one from Wireworld: 15 Amp IEC Power Cord - 12 Gauge, Custom Length| Wireworld

1 meter length is $260. I like it because it has no sound ( as far as I can tell ) and it is light weight and flexible. The AirLens weighs about 10 pounds. When I tried some of my beefy power cords they practically pulled the AL off the rack.

I’ve been rolling a few of these into my system and they give a great big taste of what Synergistic’s Atmosphere series cables bring to the party–great bass, super quiet, excellent soundstaging.

$599 12 AWG / $699 10 AWG

Thanks Paul, that’s good!

Can you furthermore tell what’s necessary if the integrated fuse inside the SMPS blows? Is it replaceable by the consumers?

Iconoclast BAV power cables are really good without costing a fortune. I use 10AWG for all my components, but for AL, 12AWG might work better as it’s so small and light.

I know he did not answer this to your satisfaction two weeks ago with the following. Might take contacting PS Audio service directly. I know they do not always answer emails right away. But a call a week later to follow up an email usually gets an answer.

No, sorry, it is not.

Thanks, but I assume it’s possible for any modder and the unit doesn’t have to be sent to distributors or to PSA, right? I assume it needs soldering?

I wonder why this is done…placing a part with a potential need to switch as quite unswitchable into a cirquit …

I agree that this doesn’t make a great deal of sense, although there’s probably a reason for it (which I would like to know). Please know that I am not talking about changing fuses to experiment with SQ, just about not having to send a unit in if the stock fuse blows.

?

Wonderful…

Hi, I know that was the aspiration but I’m pretty sure Airplay capacity didn’t eventuate after the chip couldn’t be sourced in time for the then release schedule.

Agree with you @glmoneo, Airplay would have been a significant value add, but great to hear you’re enjoying the AirLens after coming from the Bridge 2!

Seems so, yes, not listed anymore under „connectivity“ (if it ever was).

What’s up Tony, I did some digging here for you. If an Ethernet cable is plugged into the AirLens, then the WiFi is automatically powered off. If the NAS is put into standby/ “powered off”, then I’m not sure if the Ethernet connected to the AirLens would be powered or not. If the Ethernet is unplugged, then the WiFi will be turned back on. You could look at the LED lights on the back of the AirLens to see if the AirLens thinks it has a LAN connection or is looking for WiFi.

Regarding your concern if the AL could pick up WiFi commands, this is not a concern at all. There is no pathway for the AirLens to pick up commands or data sent through WiFi intended for the NAS, especially if he doesn’t configure WiFi.

Is there any argument that streaming Roon via an Airlens to my MK2 would be better than having the Roon server connected directly to the MK2 via USB (other than that I can keep my Roon server in a different room)?
