Purple fuse upgrade

I thought that they did claim that the fuses should be oriented in the direction of the writing on the fuse. When they are charging $200 for a fuse they should be consistent.

It’s best to use your own ears for the right direction no matter what the manufacture says especially the AM M1’s that claims to be non-directional. I found one way can sound quite different from the other. You really have to try both ways to find the one for you.

I agree. The Purple fuse direction makes a sonic difference. It should be easy to hear, and so is M-1.

Even with the less exotic and much less expensive HiFi-Tuning fuses (Gold, Silver Star, Supreme and Supreme3) direction matters and your ears will tell you but I’ve found they are pretty consistent with the directional flows shown below.

I just tried it both ways on my DS MK2 and it definitely sounds clearer and more transparent with the S facing the cap. Maybe the fuse is broken in in that direction already, and it’s not broken in the other direction and sounds a bit muddled. Remember, fuses has to be broken in also.
This is the direction it sound more open and transparent. Pretty big difference.

I think

…oops…in the end that we can all agree that fuses:

  • make a difference
  • need to settle in
  • seem way too expensive for what they are
  • are directional (but the manufacturer has no clue as to why or which direction is optimum)
and, they hold the crown for more the most frustrating or euphoric change you can make for the dollar.

Add A/C fuse directionality to the list of things that baffle me, considering that the current alternates.

Maybe it doesn’t matter which direction you have it. Breaking it in in the direction you have it matters more.

Yes. That could be true as well. SimplešŸ™ƒ.

Gart Powell has job a Audio Quest of listening to every spool of wire. He then chooses wire direction to mark which way it will ne used. I see why fuses could act similarly.

That could be true with DC current wires, but like RonP mentioned, AC goes both directions.

Don’t you think the bottom line is whether the fuse sounds better in one orientation versus the other? And if so that’s what counts? Understanding why is a secondary that’d be nice but it boils down to either it sounds better one way than the other or not.

Totally agree. It’s just that there seems to be as much alchemy as science in the fuse business.

That’s the same direction I have my purple installed in my MKII, which is actually the direction SR recommends trying first, with the direction of power flowing through the fuse from the S to the R. But apparently in some instances installing it the opposite direction can yield better results. New out of the box it only takes a quick try in both directions to know which is best, and it’s fairly obvious to tell in my system.

Yes, but impedance and noise sources does not, one end is always connected to you mains, and the other end is always connected to your kit.

Mine was also installed flowing from s to r. Recently I just putting a new one into MK2, and I still prefer the same way. It made an obvious difference in my case.

Ok:thinking::thinking::grin:im new to fuses n been reading this n thinking …what would be the fuse size for Australian …230…for the p 20 …youse have got me all curious …jeeez upgrades :joy::joy:

It should be in the manual, right? Or a sticker on the back?

The value needed is one half the amperage for us with 110 volts supply which is 6.3 amps . So 3.15 amps for a P20 getting 220 volts
