I currently have 4 Rel S/510 stacked. I have 2 more coming in a few weeks for me to try out the Rel 6-pack/line array. Without a doubt the stack is not for added bass.
How do you configure the stack units? what cross over and level settings do you use? I’m curious on the line array as well. Only have 2 S/510 now.
I had the same questions, falling. Here’s what REL said:
“though typically the Crossovers on the 3rd and 4th subwoofers are set a couple clicks higher than those of the bottom subwoofers. The Level controls should be set so that the output of the 3rd and 4th subwoofers are equal to that of the bottom subwoofers, which will need to be set by ear but should not be too far off from the bottom subwoofers.”
OK now I’m probably different than most as I like to setup my gear based on how I like to listen to music. I tend not to use measuring tools or even have my dealer assist. Now I do believe tools and assist from a dealer or friend can help get a general idea of where to start. Now there is nothing wrong with a dealer setting this up, I just like to do it myself.
I believe @WATChad provided some excellent info as this is basically what I did. I setup my bottom 2 subs first. I got those dialed in based on the videos Rel has on setup. Now I ended up with my subs not being in the corners. Funny I used to own S/3 SHO and those were in the corners. The S/510 reacted in my room differently. I have them parallel to my back wall. My advice is get those dialed in like you like them first. They will provide the low end bass/detail that subs are known for. As I’m sure you know once I did this my system seems to snap into place. I started experiencing a lot of low end detail from my music.
Now with my next two subs (#3 and #4), I basically did what Rel suggested by setting the crossover higher and pretty much having the same output level. Now I ended up turning all of my subs down a click or two. In the end I found that it provided a better integration with my system.
The best advice is to pick a few tracks that you love to listen. After each change, no matter how small, listen to those tracks again. I found you really need to make a change and listen to it for a bit but I have a hard time doing this. Also I would suggest after you get a setting you like, take pictures with your phone and store them with notes. This will help you go back if you ever have a need to.
Hope this helps.
OK I picked up Rel S/510 sub #5 and #6 yesterday. Put them in the system, made a few adjustments, and put on some music. My reaction was . I really didn’t want to believe adding #5 and #6 would make that much of a difference. Well I was wrong. I’m not sure what the final subs are doing but it seems like my system just opened up. I guess there is something to vertical bass as Rel touts. Now I’m only one day into a full stack but this is going to be fun.
Nice!! care to share a photo of the setup?
I haven’t gone vertical (yet) but I run 3 RELs in my system. A Carbon Limited in the front corner running in stereo and 2 S/5s in mono at the sides of the listening position. Makes me smile.
And as regards the OP,'s question, I have found benefits to upgrading the SpeakOn cable…
@michaelhifi how do you have the crossovers configured?
I have the bottom subs set at approx 40 Hz. The middle subs are approx 50 Hz or so. The top subs are approx 60 Hz. Again I just added #5 & #6 so I’m sure I will be doing some more adjusting.
All of the subs are set to the same output level. Each time I added a pair of subs I adjusted the output level down. My goal is to have the bass output of the 6 subs to match the bass output of when I only had 2 subs.
Thanks for the info… I have my sub set at 20hz so adjusting up is possible… if it was to adjust further down… this wouldn’t work for me.
Please keep reporting in and letting us know how things progress.
Thank you – I have my dual subs set at 90hz with volume set very low.
@michaelhifi: Yes, please keep the reports coming.
Cheers.
I think it’s time for this thread to move to it’s own post, or change the subject of this thread to line array subs.
How’s the integration been with the six subs Michael?
I just recently got 2 S812’s and am still dialing them in.
Did you replace the power cable for the rel subwoofer?
The integration has been AOK. I got to a point where I stopped fiddling with them. Honestly you can keep changing things all the time. From time to time I turn off the subs just to see how much of a difference they make. Going forward I don’t see myself without subs no matter what speaker I have.
Hello,
I am wondering what some of you REL owners think about using the REL cable connection VS the standard Sub connection?
My dealer has encouraged me to use the standard connection rather than the REL solution.
I know Mr. Hunter feels differently.
I know I personally feel differently.
I am curious as why an REL dealer would feel the way he does?
Perhaps too many smoked Differential amps from not following directions?
There has to be lawyers involved because REL states clearly over and over again to use the Neutrik cable “High” option. It’s what I always use and I see zero downside.
