Snowmass DirectStream Sr. upgrade - Available in the Downloads Section

Hey at least I didn’t type TOAD! i could have just as easily done that!

Been a fan of her’s for years . Never had the pleasure of seeing her in person. Her song Angel from the 1998 film City of Angels still sometimes moves me to tears.

Odd you mention Surfacing. I don’t think I played it in years and put it on 2 days ago. And yes noticed what you speak of. The second track is a nice bass track as well as I’m sure you know.

Actually saw he on a boat a long time ago. She was fantastic - and a nice person as well it seems.

Listening now - and I had everything unplugged for several hours to get my rack ready for an incoming p10. :). But really notice warm up changes on my system with the DS and some nos tubes I put in a couple months back.

That’s a Roger Waters Live album, but otherwise, yes.

Yes you are correct. I just think of him as Pink Floyd. I realize he is only one of the guys. It is a decent live recording.

Think I saw that one on Gus Skinas’ list of work in the Post yesterday - though it may not have been for Mastering ; )

I got a catalog from Acoustic Sounds and i see that Gus Skinas has remastered Wish You Were Here for SACD and this year will be doing the Dark Side Of The Moon and Animals.

When I visited a few months back, he had just finished the 50th Anniversary of Beggar’s Banquet. Guy’s the real deal.

It would be nice if they released the stereo DSD files as downloads. I’ve seen high-res PCM’s of the 50th Anniversary Beggar’s Banquest but not DSD. Same for the Pink Floyd.

I was going to say the same thing. All these recordings should be made available via download also. HD tracks\acoustic sounds? Unless you have a DMP you’re stuck listening to SACD on a stand alone player. I don’t have either. Kind of limits the audience for these reissues.

Could Gus sell thru the PS Audio website?

Gus is a mastering engineer - he doesn’t own the rights to the albums, and so can’t sell them AFAIK.

You bet! Once we get up and running that’s our intent.

He can sell us the DSD files of 50th Ann. Beggar’s Banquet, etc.?

I would look forward to him as a forum member!!

First question would be: why can’t there be some 70s-90s albums with bass remastered into them? Loads of great music rarely listened to due to inferior sound balance intended 40 years ago for whatever setups of that time.

I have always wondered if the 60s-70s master tapes did a good job of capturing the sound of kettle drum strikes and low bass guitar strings. SRV Sky is Crying, while a much newer recording, the bass guitar capture doesn’t it get for me. I think the sound of SRV’s guitar, while the greatest, doesn’t get that “play off” the bass guitar, if you know what i mean. I think the recording should show some opposing play between the two guitars as a part of that performance. (maybe its my speakers).

So my question is, Can Gus correct that? I haven’t heard his Beggars Banquet but would love to hear the reproduction of Bill Wymans bass on that one.

Gus please join us.

Chas

Mastering and remixing are not the same. Changing the balance of instruments is remixing. Copying a master tape to a DSD file is remastering. I don’t see how the final file can be better than the original master tape.

Remastering is much more than digitizing an analog tape. That is the relatively easy part.

Mastering involves, EQ, single and multi-band compression, limiting, addressing azimuth errors, and DC offset, phase shifts, use of de-essers, noise reduction and so much more.

The mastered version absolutely will sound better than the master tape in almost all cases (there is the rare circumstance where the master tape is perfect).

in practice, i think the remastering is more of an art…

in theory, i can see your point about the advantages of remastering…

Yet, i wonder why so many of my favorite CD’ albums that were remastered are less desirable than the original…
