Barry may not have thought he would post it.
It is sad that no further repairs are pending for the DMP though it sounds great it still can be very finicky at times. This is all the more important as the new offering is going to do away with the cover art. This is something that would have been a non issue to me had I not got so used to it with the PWT and DMP. The biggest issue I run into is that you can sometimes load a disk and it will refuse to play. The only solution is to eject the disk reinsert it and if your lucky the 2nd time around it will be fine! This would not be so bad if the load time was quicker. I am grateful though that it doesnāt take the 30 seconds plus it used to take with the earlier final load! Always had hope that someday a fix would come along.
Very disappointing⦠and somewhat uncharacteristic of PMac and the company.
Thought the guys would do their utmost to correct the various issues DMP has, but not doing so for a business decision I do feel let down. Will probably sell the unit too.
good luck!..very limited resale valueā¦even in the PSA communityā¦
I love the sound of the DMP but some functionality problems do exist. Blowing it off is not the right thing to doā¦PSA of all companies should know better than thatā¦
I can understand the logic involved here, but at the very least, they should offer a very, very, VERY generous trade-in for those of us who bought these transports.
That would only benefit me if the new unit did not surrender any of the features of the DMP to give
Me ones that I have no need of, such as dsp eq.
Are under 5 second tracks that common? I donāt think I have ever encountered one.
A five second or less track is exceedingly uncommon. The Redbook specification mandates a minimum of two seconds, and requires two second lead in to the first track on a CD.
Iām sorry to hear that there will be no more firmware upgrades. The sound quality of my DMP is superb, but the thing has never worked right. Itās so finicky that I tend to avoid using it. Time to move on, I guess.
Superb sound quality is not enough. I moved on, to an Esoteric. Works flawlessly and is a pleasure to own. It hasnāt caused me the slightest micro-gram of frustration, unlike the DMP which had a metric tonne of issues. Obviously the two are at different price points but price shouldnāt determine whether something is expected to work or not.
I suppose Iāve been lucky. Functionally my DMP gives me what I need every day and I really enjoy the sound quality. The last two updates were quite nice so in that sense itās sad there will be no more. My one wish is the one they canāt seem to fulfill: improved Blu-ray Audio performance. Iāll live . . .Iāve just stopped buying that format.
My DMP is much more stable now. But then again I donāt have my transport connected to the network as I have no interest in album art, itās just a gimmick to me, so that is one less thing to cause trouble. The only main issue I have is my DMP sometimes can be seen to be playing - play bar moving forward - but there is no sound? If I am lucky, when I press - Stop. - Play. ā it might play the disc - but more often than not I have to remove the disc and reload it again. And my DMP isnāt brilliant when skipping between tracks; āit gets all flustered and confusedā⦠Software up to date.
I use my DMP in its most basic formā¦.insert disc and play to the end just as I do with my records decks.
My DMP works well enough, but, it doesnāt play everything as it was meant to. I hope all others outside of the US are offered trade-ins against the new transport. DMP has no realistic resale value in the UKā¦! I would basically have to give it away⦠And we pay top whack! The one saving grace being the DMP does sound superb playing my SACDs & CDs.
Some were lucky. Many were not. Twas the luck of the draw. My point being, it should not take any luck for what you buy to work properly. It should just work. It will be interesting to see if the DMP replacement gets any traction in the market. Once bitten twice shy. Plus the pendulum of popularity is swinging towards the convenience of streaming.
As we have said, weāre kind of at the end of our rope for further firmware upgrades. Barryās gotten many of the bugs fixed in the latest firmware (make sure you have 3.15 installed). The problem we are facing is that without the engineering support (or access
to the source code from Oppo) thereās not a lot else we can do.
I will check with Barry Solway, our main programmer for DMP, and see if there arenāt any āpocket updatesā he has yet to publicly release.
Itās quirky, still, but a lot better than before Barry started. I wish there were more we could do, but with Oppoās support team gone and no access to source code, weāre kind of stuck.
What I find difficult to understand is the explanation that you donāt have access to the source code to fix it. I would have thought, having access to the source code would have been important to getting it working properly in the first place. Well, that was the approach MSB successfully used, rather than the āletās try to hack it and seeā approach.
We have discussed all of this in detail before. As we all know, Oppo pulled out of making disc players and drives. PS Audio tried to get access to source code so they could modify the things they needed to change to improve the DMPās performance but were not able to obtain access. One issue with getting access is all the licensing associated with the code. Also, even if PS Audio hired ex Oppo employees they would be unable to help as PS Audio we cannot legally see, or modify Oppoās code.
The frustrations expressed by DMP owners is fully understandable.
In hindsight, a number of things likely could have been done differently. But repeatedly taking the same broad shots over and over does not help anyone.
Thanks, Elk. Yes, time to put this to rest and move on. The horse is beaten soundly dead.
We will, as promised, come up with some ways to make the new transport easier to obtain for DMP owners.
Just give us some time to get the new device up and out the door.
Looking forward to the new transportās release and a way to ease the transition
from the DMP to the new one. Projected delivery window?
DMP + a roll of TP = New Spinner, would be my vote, Paul.
