The DMP experience

Unquestionably it was a far easier and pleasurable with beta files sent to me by Oddeophile… And I don’t want to go through anymore days of back and forth with firmware and multiple hard boots hence why I asked about getting a bunch of the next generation update files in their unsullied state. Because, something about the PSA downloads, gives my DMP a does of the vapours.

Having issues with advancing to the next track but no sound, despite the fact the DMP progress bar shows the track is playing. Is this a known issue?

I do listen to Jazz and I thought 2.06 sounded better. Using that over 3.06 for me is a no-brainer because at least 50% of what I listen to are data discs, most of which won’t play in 3.06.

I had problems with that but after I switched off the rear switch and waited 30 seconds or so then I rebooted the DMP it worked fine for me… But, there are so many variables what worked for me might nor work for you, but worth a try !

Thanks. I did try the cold reboot several times, the issue remains. What’s odd is, it does it mostly when advancing from track 1 to 2.

It is so frustrating. So many variables between DMP’s/Firmware.
I take you have tried rolling back to the earlier firmware then forward again. The idiosyncratic nature of this stuff is so head-bursting ! I have tried a few discs here to repeat your problem but they all work fine for me.

I have had the same experience with 3.06 doing that at times. Advance the track display shows it is playing and no sound form the system.

Try this reboot: Turn off the rear power switch for 30 seconds. Push down and hold the blue stand-by button on the front upper left of the machine while flipping back on the rear power switch then release the blue button. Then follow the instructions on the screen to begin initialization.

This reboot process gave me back DSD with my SACD’s.

Thank you, I’ll give it a try.

Now that is really interesting. Doing a screen calibration fixed the SACD issue! I wonder if it is going to last. Play a number of CD’s and than try to play an SACD and see if it still plays as DSD.

I have, and it does.

Obviously - I believe you but I wouldn’t have credited that . Just goes to show. I wouldn’t have thought about that. Has it performed faultlessly since ?

Yes indeed.

Well that is great to hear. I will take a mental note of this one. Well done !

Let me check with Barry. He took this week off and will be back in full swing next week. I don’t think it’s a known problem so it may be specific to a specific disc or type, perhaps?

It’s hard to pull each other out of the quagmire we were in and hit a clean slate with 3.06 but it’s something over time we each would benefit from doing - essentially hitting a mental reset and wiping clean the older problems, starting fresh as if you just got the DMP with 3.06 installed. I know it’s hard.

OK, if that’s a repeatable known problem we’ll get that addressed in the next update.

Paul, I do comprehend all you say now and said in earlier posts. 3.06 code quirks and detritus associated with said code: - and with earlier releases, which would have flummoxed Alan Turing, and still a major pain for owners of the DMP to circumnavigate on a daily basis; how they will ‘very soon’ be lost in the mists of time. You have declared as much. Time will tell.

Another concern I hold with the finished code, an intangible thing, the unsullied delivery of files from PSA to the DMP ? Because, I was stuck in a cul-de-sac until Richard released me with his beta code… my DMP is performing much, much better now-(still far from perfect)-sonically and operationally so, the downloads only burdened me with greater turmoil. This is gist of ‘my’ concern regarding updating the operating system !

Dephonator, please tone it down. Expressing your discontent is no problem, but please do so respectfully.

Thanks, Dirk. When the next code is released in early September you should give it a whirl as is just to let us know. Of course, you have to still follow all that you already know: unzip, remove the files from the folder, place the individual files on a clean SD card, make sure there’s no folder there. If that doesn’t go smoothly for you, please email me personally paul@psaudio.com and I will ship out to you a pre-formatted SD card.
