Thanks. I've been waiting for some feedback on the I2S (HDMI inputs) polarity auto sense. No need for more input - it's too close to release to polish it enough (and or add a UI) to include on this release.
Therenhas been a major problem with the B2 functionality with torreys…I am unable to listen to more than 3 songs sometimes not even a full song before the ds crashes and has to be rebooted, everything locks up and it wont even chnge inputs. also I don’t understand why every time i reboot it has to run through the entire update again, normally after we update firmware it doesn’t do the flashing power button after it changes the os version…but with torreys it does it every time. if i only use usb or tos everything works fine and has ran nonstop for 12+ hrs
A few things to help clarify things:
The I2S changes only affect the HDMI inputs.
The Bridge code hasn’t changed in Torryes.
In an official release you can leave the SD card in the slot and it will only update the software once.
With certain LOADER.CFG’s the code will get loaded each time you boot - this is extreamly handy for betas, etc. so you don’t have to load something else before you reload something that’s almost the same as your last load. For this beta you should remove the SD card after a successful upgrade.
Despite me saying that the bridge code didn’t change - clearly people are having some problems with the bridge in Torreys. There are at least two confounding problems when trying to understand what changed for bridge usage - the system coming up explicitly muted on boot and the bug that some upgrades come up looking fine but being silent. The 2nd problem requires at least a reboot and possibly a reload of the software to fix.
I’ll have to let Dennis debug the bridge issues, but I’ll keep watching to see if I see something that the FPGA or other changes I make might be confusing things.

Also just something I noticed that when listening to dsd thru the usb using asio it shows dsd on the display where it used to show dop
Yep. That's an indication that the USB code is sending raw DSD to the FPGA and not DoP (even if the USB code is receiving DoP.)
After I install Torreys, no sound comes out till I press the volume + on the touch screen. After that it is all fine even if I put the DS in stand by mode and then wake it back.
If I change a song, it starts normally, then for few seconds there is a scratching sound and then things become normal. This is not something happening always, but sometimes.
I’m using bridge, bubble upnp, minim server running on macmini. Ethernet form macmini to DS.
It seems that the trigger to losing sound from DS is when bridge stream is going from one sample rate (or format pcm/dsd) to another. Fix (workaround) is to cold reboot DS (I had to reboot DS many many times today…).
Interesting enough that twice my DS got in a state that it been running flawlessly including SR/format changes. However when I wanted to confirm this will be the case also after reboot and willingly rebooted DS I just found it won’t - so another hint would be that it is somehow possible to get to a state when bridge SR change will not “mute” DS - however I have no clue how I got there (most probably only by different tracks played).
Last one just to confirm my previous post - when this issue happens during switching from PCM to DSD, the DS display says 176kHz instead of DSD64. From that moment DS will stay silent (at any input) until next reboot.
For me the BII works great with PCM material up to its max resolution. However, even attempting to stream any DSD results in loss of audio and requires a reboot. Switching inputs or going back to PCM will not revive it. A full reboot is necessary.
Over USB, no issues, everything plays fine PCM or USB.
The other issue I just saw tonight. After a reboot, I was streaming over USB, I fired up JRemote, connected to my desktop in another room running JRiver, and queued up a 176.4K PCM track to play via the BII. When I switched the output to Bridge II the music started to play but the Network icon stayed red. When pressed and going into edit mode, all of the network parameters are blank (I have a static IP set). However, the BII is visible to JRiver and playing, so it obviously has a good network connection. But the display is hosed.
Listening to Joshua Bell play Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D, which I recently heard live in concert. At the appropriate volume this recording is taking me back to the concert hall. There are parts of this where the violin is played with almost violence and you can hear every string pluck and bow technique very distinctly. I’m loving the sound, just need to get the BII issues debugged.
Ted, let me know if there are any specific tests you’d like run.
install was flawless. After that each switch on was also flawless.
the red mute button upon switching on is annoying, please change it to be like Yale
ipad > lightning usb adapter > usb cable > ifi iusb3 nano > ifi gemini usb cable > directstream works flawlessly
macbook pro running roon server > usb cable > ifi iusb3 nano > ifi gemini usb cable > directstream works flawlessly
sound: definitely has the same voicing as Yale, but seems better in every respect. I’ve been listening to Torreys exclusively since I got it so this comparison is from memory. I will load Yale soon to listen to the actual differences.
Here’s my initial impressions of the Torreys upgrade…
Digital Playback stack:
Auralic Aries Extreme (upgraded version of Aries with upgraded USB outputs w- dual Femto clocks and an improved Low Noise Linear power supply unit)
USB connection to PS Audio Directsteam
High bitrate FLAC, WAV, and DSF files steamed from JRiver via Aries
Tidal streaming
Curious USB cable with 2 Jitterbugs plugged into both USB slots on the Aries (As an aside, Curious USB is a fantastic USB cable... best I've ever heard and a huge upgrade in and of itself... absolutely transformative for music over USB, and at it's price point it cannot be beat... perhaps at ANY price point it cannot be beat. In my system, the Curious USB cable by itself delivered an improvement that surpasses the improvement of Torreys over Yale. It really made me appreciate and enjoy the DS much more running Yale the past few months. Combined with the Torreys upgrade, it's pure magic)
Using RCA outputs from DS to my Conrad Johnson pre-amp
Firmware install went fine. I freaked out when there was no audio coming through until I read on this thread that the DS comes up muted after fw upgrade. No issues playing any of my music formats through the Aries/USB connection. 16/44 and high bitrate FLAC, AIFF, WAV, Tidal, DSD over DoP all played fine. I didn't use any other input than USB. I've had no issues with pops/crackles or any anomalies with the sound. No issues with stability of the DS.
In terms of initial audio quality, I’ve found that post-firmware-upgrade, the sound on my DS starts out a bit harsh and takes multiple hours to open up and get full detail/smoothness back… it’s not logical and YMMV, but that’s been my observation with every firmware upgrade. First hour’s impression were “it’s a little better”, a few hours later of continuous play helped considerably.
Observations on sound quality:
Soundstage is not so much wider, but deeper/higher than before and more realistic
More micro-detail pops out than before
More detail in tone and overtones comes through. Brass and violins for example, have much more texture to the sound. More of the harmonics of each instrument comes through. Brass and saxophone, which in the past always had a twinge of harshness to it, sounds ravishing now
Digital glassiness is further reduced, tone is more natural, more liquid, more lifelike
Transients seem quicker and attack on notes seems to jump out more and sound more lifelike
More air! Again, soundstage depth is really a step up from Yale
Details from live concert performances sparkle... there is more information being extracted than before
Bass is strong just like with Yale, with perhaps more oomph/speed in attack at the beginning of drum beats or bass instruments. Again, I would say there is more texture from bass instruments.
I'll leave it on repeat overnight and see if the sound blossoms any more, but so far thumbs up on Torreys! Yale was a very substantial upgrade, Torreys goes even further. Tip of the hat to Ted and Thank You for your hard work and passion for better sound!!! Also thank you to Paul and PS Audio for making the investment to keeping tuning and releasing meaningful updates that have really transformed this product over the past few years!
Out of curiosity after reading this thread I just pulled out my SACD of [Peter Gabriel’s] So, and I played Sledghammer in DoP via my Oppo 103 / Vanity over sp/dif. I’m not sure if I’m hearing what he is hearing or not. The description of “snapping noises” is a little vague. I’m guessing that I’m probably not hearing the same thing because I’m assuming that he might be referring to electrical pops.
But if this isn’t what he is referring to, then I must admit that the bass notes seem to have a distracting popping quality to them which has never drawn attention to itself before when listening to this recording. But this just sounds-like the superior (or possibly exaggerated?) transient response of Torreys at work to my ears.
On further listening Torrys might just be too revealing for this album. It’s actually somewhat unpleasant to listen to some of the songs on “So” with Torrys.
Now that I’ve lived with Torreys for 2 days, played a vast selection of music - switching between Torreys / (Yale which is loaded into my second DS) The difference between Yale and Torreys ( in my system ) - it’s like night and day… Yale is more of a Hi-Fi whereas Torreys is the performance…
It isn’t just the amount of new ( hidden ) detail on recordings that I have never heard before, or the subterranean bass on certain recordings that rattle the very foundations, or a soundstage on a scale that I have never experienced before with a depth that goes so far back - towards the end of the street into vast darkness… What I am experiencing in my room - it’s as if the musicians are actually out into the room and they are now playing better, with such an intensity and sheer enthusiasm to the music… Yes - Torreys is all about music… Pre - Torreys it was just different warmups to the concert…
Big congratulations Ted: As I see it, this FW is your Magnum Opus…‘but I dare say you will take to even greater heights next week’!!
Regarding issues with the Bridge and changing from one resolution to another:
I have a JRiver 21 MC playlist that contains hundreds of FLAC 96/24, WAV 192/24 and DSF 64 files. JR21 reads the files at random from an external hard drive attached to my PC. They then go wirelessly from the PC to an Xfinity Gateway router and from there via Ethernet to the Bridge (original version). They play without issue even though the file type and resolution changes from track to track.

My impressions after my first listening session.
Cons:
less mid tones
Now, this is interesting because it support my reporting.
The question is if it is the absence of noise that cause this illusion or if the observation perceived is real?
I strongly suspect perception; I am certain the DS measures flat.
But when there is any change in reproduction we tend to interpret this as a change in frequency response. We also tend to fixate on the artifacts of sound recording/reproduction such as imaging.

Take the SD card out. Then when you reboot it won’t go through the process anymore
I have been fiddling with phase today. I hardly touch phase but have noticed more recordings I seem to like out of phase. My Aja ISO is a good example. Maybe I never noticed before - but thought phase might be something to check out. I know some recordings are out of phase etc… Just wondered if anyone else has had this experience.
I just ejected my SD card but kept it in the SD slot for storage. Then I don’t loose it (i.e. keep track of it) as long as I don’t move the DS. For the final version of Torreys I understand that the DS won’t reload the OS during reboot.
Ted. I wish I could be there right now to hug you. And Paul. And Arnie.
I upgraded the DirectStream in the store this morning. My colleague walked over and asked me what I did. It was that noticeable.
I sat down for a bit of listening later during the day on this system:
PowerPlant P10
DirectStream DAC -> Chord Signature Tuned Aray
BHK Stereo 250 -> Tellurium Q Silver
DALI Epicon 8
I put in a few of my usual tracks - and with every one, there was a hint of “wait, that wasn’t there before”??
What got me was how much more I could delineate each instrument in a complex arrangement - in particular, the start/attack phase of the instrument. In Max Richter’s Four Seasons Recomposed Winter 1… the violins and the cello… the initial edge gave me goosebumps. Listening to it was just an emotional experience.
I finally updated my own DirectStream DAC when I got back and in my own system, the attack edges were still noticeable but not as obvious in the store. But in my own system - where I am more familiar - I did notice that I could make out each instrument or vocal just far more clearly than I could ever before. I didn’t think I could get better than Yale. But I was thankfully wrong.
After reading this thread [here] I too connected up and played SACD of SO;… TarnishedEars is bang - on… The whole disc sounds like it is on the raggedy edge… Very oppressive ! I hear a distant popping type sound on deep bass/bass effects… Played in DoP through my OPPO 103 also in sp/dif. As I type this I am Playing Junior Wells - Come On In This House on SACD and it doesn’t sound as good now … I also have the Redbook CD and on switching I prefer the standard CD on the PWT… Torreys really sounds amazing with standard Cds through my PWT… I will dig out more SACDs and see how the shape up…
