The DMP experience

I am definitely on watch and ready to go!

““The repeat on the PWT would also have to be set for each disk and this seems like a logical normal way of operation.””

Yes and No. Yes the PWT would clear the repeat but clearly be seen to do so: With 3.06 the DMP doesn’t: “It is clearly seen to be still locked on repeat mode but it doesn’t repeat the next disk”.

The repeat feature worked perfectly with earlier code but not so with 3.06.

Not a Biggy that’s for sure – but as I always use the repeat it’s a quirk I simply don’t like/want. I want back this simple feature that works so well with 2.06, 2.08, etc.

“Just a personal annoyance that bugs me with 3.06 – just like your annoyance with 3.06 with PCM/DSD dysfunctionality that works perfectly fine for me” !!

In Spanish we’d say something along the lines of “Pedirle peras al olmo”

In Scottish Gaelic “eu-comasach”. This was part of the school curriculum back in my day that has now been scrapped
Yes back in the days when a group of kids walking to the school actually talked to one another whereas today they walk side by side in silence, snap chatting or whatever the hell it is called.

I did not notice that the indicator stuck on. Yes if you use repeat that would be confusing.

I’ve never found repeat to work correctly, whether it’s repeat a track or repeat all. From day one it had a mind of it’s own. Sometimes it would work as it should, other times it would advance to the next track or not repeat the disk. It isn’t a day-to-day issue since I don’t use it much but it made breaking in components a PITA.

Never had an issue with repeat on the PWT.

" I’ve never found repeat to work correctly, whether it’s repeat a track or repeat all."

Well, why doesn’t that surprise me, the amount of quirks between each DMP seems limitless

The repeat worked perfectly on my DMP with 2.06 and 2.08 firmware but it doesn’t with 3.06. I do use the repeat function so I want it back to a steady state.

Paul said all the quirks/issues will be rectified in the next release

If the repeat still doesn’t function on my DMP expect a riot
:grimacing:

As per Paul’s recommendation I called Customer service today. I spoke with TJ. He provided me with a force reinstall load that is supposed to clear everything out of the device before writing in the new code. I followed all his directions and noticed something interesting with the new code. When the initialize took place the screen brightness was already set to low which is how I operate the DMP. With the DSD set to Medium and the DMP low the screen brightness is about equal. Every other time I have updated the firmware I have always had to go to settings and adjust it as it defaults to the brightest setting. In conversation I had mentioned to TJ that text and cover art has been working the best with 3.06 that the DMP has ever done. I told him I never get the r/w error. I said i hope I don’t jinx it. Well guess what the first CD I loaded I did see the r/w red error message. The interesting thing is the cover art still came up ok. Has all this helped with my SACD playback? I cannot say for sure as only time will tell. I will update that status one way or the other after some use.

While clicking on the current link to copper the following came to my mind, remembering PSA is under some fire for „imperfection“ in this thread:

While I understand some anger of affected customers, I remembered where I had a feeling of absolute perfection of PSA how things are done from start. This was this website incl. social collaboration, it was especially Copper, where every to do of such a publication, from opening salvo to different formats for reading seem to have been thought to the end before starting
the selection of partners for the current product lines all full of Audio industry giants as well as the early recognition of meaningful trends and distribution and marketing creativity. Not to leave out the probably 99% troublefree products as from most manufacturers and the close to perfect selection of design features for products.

It must be really bad luck when certain products of such a company have some problems, or a certain complexity of a technical problem or a field of activity that came a bit by surprise for them

I would wonder very much if things that happened around Bridge/DMP/DSjr would ever happen again like that

I noticed today that with 3.06 forced install load the text displayed once the cover art comes up is all screwed up. Missing and wrong characters. When I check the playlist everything is correct. Also I went to play Simon And Garfunkle’s Greatest hits and it became one of those invisible disks that do not report that the disk is being played in the DMP. I reinserted it a second time same thing. The third time was the charm it pulled up the text and cover art and there it was in the playlist!

Hi Guys at PS Audio,
just received news about DMP Update to 3.06 during a trip to Leipzig last weekend. Well, good news. After returning home, I put the luggage away quickly, turned on my PC and started the download. All of us know the procedure. Had to put SD-card vica versa in DMP (than with DSD  updated the player, checked the firmware and turned main switch off, waited a few minutes and turned on again. Afterwards I put DSD to power.

I started listening with some Indian Music: Ravi Shankar, live, with Raga Kirwani. Very good in details, Sitar and supportive Sarod sounded very natural with good live-like-feeling. No harshbess but improved resolution. Very fast in moving tonality and following instrument’s soundscape, colourful

Secondly I inserted a Bach Cantata on SACD (Hybrid). Mazaaki Suzuki was conducting the Bach Collegium Japan. The display showed DSD with full DSD decomposition on my DSD. Handshake! I couldn’t believe it after seconds of listening to the opening choir of that choral cantata: Great improvement. Better trebles, meaning much higher resolution. Choirs are top rank in listening. Room also great. Each voice group of the Choir can exactly be located, also in the depth of the room. And: Last harshness and narrowness in choir playback disappeared completely. Also solo voices with higher definition. The playback is even fresher, full of suspense and revolving on my Neumann KH 420.

Great, great job. I didn expect, that such a step in improvement was even possible on that very high level, DMP had before with 2.08. Thank you very much indeed to all of you at PS Audio!

Best regards from Germany,
Frank

Does it still work ? Or is/was it a temporary thing like your PCM/DSD quirk.

I tried it yesterday again. Using the same SACD. It worked fine.

Until those pesky gremlins wake up
:smirk:

Thanks. That’s good to hear!

The BIS/Suzuki recordings are excellent and a perfect test, each cantata has everything from choir and orchestra to intimate recitative.

Dirk, So far the DMP has been properly playing CD’s and SACD’s. However since the force reload of 3.06 I am now seeing the red r/w error and I sometime have to reload the disk to get cover art. Now the text has been messed up once the cover art comes up. The Dmp seems like it wants to give me a little dig every time it gives up an issue.

Six, my DMP has a new quirk. Touching the screen it won’t move to the next and/or previous tracks
It works fine with the remote but not so by touching the screen.? This has just developed .

Just another day in the life of DMP ownership.

The curse of the pharaohs has nothing on the curse of the DMP !

If it is something to do with the touch screen it’s likely either a calibration problem or the amount of pressure on the touch screen. You might try calibrating the screen which we can walk you though if you want. Just drop us an email or give a call.

Thanks, Paul. I recalibrated the screen just over a week to 10 days ago when I had other issues with my DMP. But I will do another calibration tonight.

Why does it drift off or whatever the technical term is ? Just so temperamental !

My DMP needs a visit from a demon-fighting cleric !
