Me too. And that is what I have seen elsewhere from some ears I trust.
In my singular experience (I replaced the fuse in my P10 regenerator with a sluggo and placed the SDFB in front of the PC feeding the P10), the Swiss Digital Fuse box and a copper Sluggo sounds better in my system (which is digital-centric - streaming files and spinning Discs feeding a DS Sr. DAC).
As we like to say (and @mark-d most recently did), YMMV.
Cheers.
I feel the materials used in the construction of the fuses are behind the uptick in the quality of sound experienced. Why else would they sound better?
Yes, that what I was expecting too. But that amp, a Bedini 25/25 pure Class A, was a bit of a boutique amp at the time (given it wasn’t super expensive). John Bedini was a bit of a fanatic (maybe a bit of a madman ) and even back then was super critical of which components were selected in his designs. I suspect he voiced it with the fuses as part of the whole.
He used to grind the tops of the power transistors and put some kind of fluid in them and than epoxy the tops. He did make great amps. I still have an 803 that puts out 500 wpc into 4 ohms 2500 wpc into 8 ohms that souns very good. My son uses two of them to biamp his B&W 800 Matrix speakers. I drive my 800’s with a BHK 250.
That was the 150/150 Mk2. My friend had one. The Mk1 without the mystery filled transistors sounded better. I had an 803 as well. Nice amp, but I sold it to a friend some time ago. The input stage is a very unstable design (good as the amp sounded). There was a point where my source gear was far from the 803. I needed about a 15’ IC to get there. John said to use nothing but bone stock low capacitance coaxial cable. He was right. The thing blew up twice on my going into runaway oscillation. After getting it repaired the second time I sent it to a new home.
My 803 has always been stable. The longest interconnect I had into it was 2 meter. The same goes for the pair my son has. Dick Shahinian is the one who got me to use the Bedini’s.
Yeah, 2M wouldn’t be as issue. Dick and I were good friends (I used to live on the Island). I spent many hours at the factory talking with him, listening to music. Those were happy times.
This fuse business is strange. After two week vacation my streaming sound just never reached the highpoint that I remembered. The weird thing is PST sounds better than streaming again (was not the case a few weeks ago). Out of desperation, I removed the Master fuse in Lumin U2, and put in a stocked PSA fuse into it (the one came with U2 still sucks in case you wonder). Well, I like the sound quite a bit. Everything sounds great. But, the only weakness is that the bass is a bit loose, and not as deep as the Master fuse.
So, I tried something elso. I removed the AM M-1 fuse from DS MK2 and inserted the Master fuse into it. Wow, the deep bass is back, and the soundstage is deepened by a good three feet. Somehow this setup sounded the best.
The strange thing is I had this setup before when I first got the 2nd Master fuse, and I thought the sound was terrible. The 2nd Master I bought it from Ron as used, so it should have been broken in already. But obviously it needs more time in my system. Maybe the Massive software update plus APS transformer mod changed something, or maybe the fuse needs 1000 plus hours to resettle. For whatever reason, I like it a lot better this time.
Maybe the MK2 Dac just needed a power cycle. Sometimes things are better after that. Sometimes my mK2 needs the system reset to degauss the transformer. You would have to put M-1 back in to see it it was power cycle.
The master fuse was always thin no matter where I put mine. Fuses are funny.
Two weeks away from home often gives you an overall objectivity of your system that is difficult to achieve during regular listening sessions.
Both of you gave very wise suggestions, and in a few days I will do the fuse dances again.
My head is clearer after vacation, or muddier from long jet lag. I don’t know which one yet.
Happy Cake Day!!
Is there complicated software out there to monitor and correct your brain?
BEW Brain EQ Wisdom, settings such as “jet lag”, “hangover” or “annual taxes just paid” might show a useful curve on a graph that a special filter should be able to smooth, modify or adjust in some way so we can get back to the right mood and clarity!
I definitely need to rehabilitate myself from the last few weeks down the software rabbit hole!
That room software rabbit hole seems to take too much work. It’s too hard a work for a happy retiree for sure. So, I’m not ready to jump into yet. Brain wave software I will take it when it is available.
Now I remember I also have MK2 plugged into Puritan PSM-156, plus a Zenwave Silver cord in the system that was different from before too. These variables may have changed my evaluation on Master fuse in MK2. But I need to put back M-1 later to confirm.
Try removing the Puritan, just for giggles.
There has been giggles here and there with different components in and out of Puritan many times, and somehow MK2 could never leave it. I need to borrow your Ethos to see if I’ll
Too many variables, IMO. Plus you have been away long enough to more than muddy your aural memory.
Who knows, the pressurization and depressurization of your sinus during air travel may have recalibrated your “instrumentation”.
Its difficult to be patient, but I suggest you stop fiddling long enough to set your baseline sound over many hours of listening to a variety of music and sources.
Then you will have a better sense of what’s “right” and what’s “wrong”.
My $.02.
Cheers
Good suggestion! I’ll leave the fuses alone for today, for sure.
Today seems more like a change the feet under all the gear kind of day.
